Chapter Two

The aircraft jolted and bounced as it entered the atmosphere. Kay was thrown from side to side in her seat but wasn’t bothered. She kept her head turned from Eggman, who had forced her to come along with him despite her efforts to inform him that she wouldn’t help him.

Finally, the craft gave one last heave before settling into a calm descent. Kay glanced at the grey wall to her right and sighed. This thing had no windows, so she couldn’t see how close they were getting to landing, and she couldn’t observe the beauty she knew was waiting for her on the way down.

After a while she felt a thud, and the craft stopped moving entirely. A hatch opened just in front of her, allowing sunlight to flood in and blind her.

“Welcome to Mobius,” the doctor said with an evil smile as he gestured to the open doorway. Kay looked at him, rolled her eyes, and stood up, heading for the opening. She hadn’t even reached the threshold before she could taste the clean air wafting in from outside. Her heart skipped a beat in excitement, but she made no indication of being so to Eggman and instead started down the ramp that had extended when the hatch opened.

What she noticed first was the green. Everything, everywhere, was just green. There was no hint of pollution or artificial growth. It was just pure, green grass, trees, and plants everywhere. Kay almost couldn’t believe her eyes. She looked up at the sky as she took another step down the ramp and was almost overwhelmed by how blue it was. Very few clouds dotted the sky, but even those seemed pure and untouched by any pollution. Everything here was just nature, nothing artificial. Kay wanted to laugh out loud. It was just so perfect here.

Finally her foot touched down in the grass, and she smiled upon feeling it. It didn’t crunch, it wasn’t stiff, it didn’t feel fake or wrong. It was real. Then Kay took a glance out at the horizon and could just make out the silhouette shape of a city. After studying it for a moment, she realized she knew exactly where she was, and she beamed.

But then she remembered Eggman, and her smile faded. No matter how much she wanted to run and see everything Mobius had to offer, she was still determined to defy the man who had tried to kill Sonic several times in the past. So, setting an unwavering scowl on her face, she turned to face him.

“Well, what are you waiting for?” he asked, waving a hand as if to shoo her away. “Run!” Kay crossed her arms. She didn’t move. “Run, you irritating hedgehog!”

Hedgehog, Kay thought. So that’s what he turned me into. She still didn’t move.

“Blast it,” Eggman muttered as he moved to his control console and pressed a few buttons. A moment later a small grey shell flew from one of the cannons on the craft towards Kay and exploded just to her left. Then another exploded to her right. Kay knew what he was doing. She’d seen it before. He was just trying to scare her into obeying, but she wasn’t about to fall for that.

He won’t actually hit me, she thought to herself with an amused smirk. He said it himself. I’m too valuable. But then she noticed the cannons altering their positions to aim directly at her. Kay’s heart stopped. Eggman fired, and she screamed and jumped out of the way. The shell exploded behind her in the spot she’d just been in. Panicked, Kay looked up at the tyrant and saw he was aiming for her again. She jumped up and started running, shells exploding behind her as she went.

She was still determined, however, and darted behind a tree to hide from him. Seconds later an explosion at her side forced her to fall back into the open. Kay looked up at Eggman but made no move to dart away again. He snarled at her.

“Blast it all! Why won’t you run?!” he demanded.

“I told you I wouldn’t cooperate with you,” she replied with a frown. “And I’m most certainly not going to force Sonic out of hiding.”

“Do you realize that I could kill you with just one of these?” The doctor asked her. Kay slowly got to her feet, her legs trembling beneath her.

“Yes.”

He growled. “What a waste.” He aimed for her once more, but this time Kay stayed put. She was going to keep Sonic safe if it was the last thing she did, and the way things were going it seemed as if that were going to be the case. As he fixed his cannons on her, she clenched her fists and planted her feet firmly to the ground, raising her head to meet death proudly. Then he fired.

Suddenly Kay felt something wrap around her waist and she was thrown to the side, just out of reach of the explosion. She heard soft, familiar laughter, and she desperately searched for the source. She was surprised to see it was right in front of her.

“While I admire your bravery, I still think that was a stupid move,” a blue hedgehog told her, a smile on his face. Kay stared in shock. It was him.

“Y-You’re Sonic the Hedge—”

“Hold that thought,” he told her, holding up a finger before darting away. Kay watched in awe as he jumped and curled into a ball in midair, attacking Eggman’s craft with his spin-dash. After denting the carrier enough to disable it temporarily, he bolted back towards her, scooping her up into his arms as he did so. Soon the wind was rushing through Kay’s ears as he ran at supersonic speed.

“So, it seems you have me at a disadvantage,” he told her good-naturedly. “Care to introduce yourself?”

“I’m…” she was finding it hard to speak. The Hero of Mobius had just saved her life. “I’m Kay.”

“Nice to meet you, Kay,” he replied with a smile. Her heart fluttered when he said her name. Then his emerald green eyes looked at her directly. “Any idea why he was after you?”

“He was trying to use me as a weapon against you, but I wouldn’t let him,” she explained. He grinned.

“Glad you’re on our side.”

Not long after, he skidded to a graceful stop. Kay took a quick look at her new surroundings and immediately knew where she was, despite the thick forest surrounding them. Sonic gently set her down.

“You’ll be safe here,” he said. Kay started walking as soon as her feet touched the ground, stopping at the edge of the forest and gazing out at the beautiful city, amazed. She was here. New Mobotropolis.

“Oh, my gosh,” she muttered, most of her breath taken away by the sight. Sonic came up beside her.

“Pretty cool, huh?”

“Yeah…” Kay drank it all in, feeling overwhelmed. There was the marketplace, just to her right. Down the road to her left was Chuck’s Diner. Everything she saw, she recognized. She just couldn’t believe she was really, truly here. With Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic!” a high-pitched voice squealed. Both hedgehogs turned to see a girl in a pink dress rushing towards them. Before they had time to react, she had tackled Sonic, almost knocking him over. “Oh, Sonic, I’ve been looking all over for you!”

“Hey, let me go.” Sonic frowned as he tried to pry her hands from his waist. She pulled away a moment later, and that’s when she noticed the newcomer.

“Who are you?”

“I’m Kay,” Kay replied, trying to hide a smile. The girl grabbed her hand and pumped it up and down excitedly.

“Nice to meet you, Kay. I’m Amy Rose, Sonic’s girlfriend.”

Kay glanced up at Sonic, disbelieving, and he rolled his eyes. Kay smiled knowingly.

“So, where are you from?” Amy asked, dropping her hand.

“I…uh…” Kay frowned and tried to think of a way to explain her situation without going into great detail. But then she decided it wasn’t worth it, so she just shrugged. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“Have you seen the city before?”

“Uh…only in pictures,” Kay replied truthfully. She remembered all the pictures she’d seen in her Sonic the Hedgehog comics. They appeared right after Eggman destroyed Knothole, and she’d soaked up new the information like a sponge.

“Oh, that’s nothing compared to the real thing!” Amy exclaimed. Kay nodded.

“I don’t doubt it.”

Amy took her hand, dragging her further into the city. “Come on. Sonic and I will show you around.”
