Chapter Twelve

Kay had her back turned to Scratch as he piloted the shuttle through the air towards the Casino Night Zone. She didn’t know what to think. Scratch had been her favorite character from the AoStH series and in her opinion he had the best bad guy laugh ever, but he was still a villain, and he was still working against her.

Then suddenly he spoke. “We’re nearing the Warp Portal. Hang on to your seat, hedgehog.”

Kay turned to look at him. “I don’t have a seat.”

“Exactly. Ba-ha-ha-ha!”

Kay rolled her eyes. Scratch may have been a villain, but he was still bad at it. She didn’t have much time to criticize him, however, because she was suddenly thrown backwards when the shuttle jolted forward. Kay lost her footing and hit her head on the back door as she went down. The shuttle shook for a few moments before returning to normal. She rubbed the back of her head where she’d hit it and moaned.

“Welcome to the Casino Night Zone,” Scratch announced grandly.

“Ugh, you need to take your driver’s test again,” Kay muttered as she stood, slowly making her way to the cockpit where he sat. She kept a careful eye on the back of his head until she was able to look out the front and only window. What she saw took her breath away.

She’d seen the Casino Night Zone before, of course. It had appeared both in the AoStH series and the comics she’d read, but that was nothing compared to this. Bright neon-colored lights flashed everywhere, illuminating the darkness and muting out the stars. The buildings here were taller than she thought, and in the darkness they almost looked dark purple with sky blue windows.

She was so blown away by the sight that it took her a moment to realize that the shuttle was pulling into a landing dock at the top of a building. It came to a full stop with a thud, and Scratch was instantly out of his seat, grabbing her once more and pulling her out into the open air. Kay was almost overwhelmed by how loud it was. There were so many sounds – people talking and laughing (possibly even fighting), music from the casino, slot machines, and etc. She thought it was a wonder that the workers weren’t deaf.

Scratch pulled her along behind him, going through a door on the roof and traveling down a spiraling staircase to the top level of the casino, where there were several different species all huddled together in one room. Kay stared at the many colors and lights and muttered, “Oh my gosh…this place is crazy!”

“I’m sure Mammoth Mogul will be happy to hear any comments you have,” Scratch told her absent-mindedly, continuing to pull her along. Upon hearing the name, however, Kay stopped suddenly, making the robotic chicken stumble over himself for a moment.

“Mammoth Mogul?” Kay asked, not sure if she should be honored or frightened.

“Yeah. He wants to talk to you.” Scratch gave her arm a yank once more, but this time Kay refused to budge, pulling against him. He gave her an annoyed look. “Oh, don’t be such a chicken.”

Kay smirked. “Look who’s talking.”

“Shut up. I happen to like the way I look.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Come on,” he growled, pulling even harder. “Mammoth Mogul isn’t that bad once you get to know him.” Kay tried to resist, but Scratch was surprisingly strong and he dragged her after him like she was light as a pillow.

“I don’t want to get to know him,” Kay replied.

“Well, that’s too bad.” His tone surprised her. Scratch wasn’t usually this easily annoyed…or determined, for that matter. Where was this resolve when he was after Sonic all those years ago? Has working for Mogul changed his mindset somehow? She decided not to ask and risk further irritation from him.

Scratch yanked her into an elevator, always keeping a firm grip on her arm. When the doors opened a few floors down, he dragged her towards the door of an office titled “Manager.” Once he’d gotten the door open, he tried to get her to enter but she refused, still terrified at the thought of meeting Mogul. Finally, the robot gave her a mighty shove and snapped, “Get in there!”

Once again Kay lost her balance and toppled to the floor of the office. She let out a huff and rolled her eyes. This is not the Scratch I know and love.

“Now, Scratch, that’s no way to treat our guest,” a deep, rumbling voice that reminded Kay of thunder said calmly. Her heart started pounding and she slowly lifted her head to see the great mammoth sitting behind a desk and glancing down at her with his fierce eyes.

“M-M-Mammoth Mogul,” she stuttered.

“Sorry, sir,” Scratch mumbled, “but she was being difficult.”

Mogul cocked his head at her. “You look rather pale, my dear girl. Are you all right?”

Kay could barely stand. Her knees felt weak. This was the man who had attempted to take over Mobius once before, been put in prison, formed the Destructix, and was mentor to Silver in the future. He was, quite literally, the most powerful man alive. And he was talking to her. Kay was so scared that she began backing away without even realizing it. It wasn’t until she bumped into Scratch that she was jolted back to her senses.

“Ah-ah-ah,” Scratch grinned down at her. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Mogul reached for his cane and stood, the top of his head nearly touching the ceiling. He was huge. “You have no need to be afraid of me. I will not hurt you, nor will anyone else here.”

Kay remembered how the shuttle had jolted upon reaching the Warp Portal and thrown her back against the door, and she gave Scratch an annoyed glance. “Too late for that.”

“I simply wish to speak with you,” Mogul continued. “The doctor has told me of your unique talents and I must say I’m rather intrigued.”

“You and everyone else.”

“How did you manage to gain such knowledge? Even I don’t know as much as you.”

Kay crossed her arms. “Hours and hours of research.”

“By what source?”

She almost laughed out loud. “I guarantee that the sources I had no longer exist.”

“What do you mean?” Mogul asked. Kay sighed.

“Look, we both know where this is going. You’re eventually going to start asking me questions about the future that I’m not going to answer.” She smirked. “Let’s not forget I’m on Sonic’s side here.”

Mogul eyed her carefully, seeming to determine whether she was serious. He must have decided she was, because he nodded slowly. “You’re more intelligent than I first thought.” He waved his hand nonchalantly and sat back down. “Very well. I’ll leave the interrogation to the doctor. Scratch, please show our guest to her room.”

“Yes, sir,” Scratch replied. This time, however, he didn’t grab Kay. He simply gave her a nudge indicating for her to follow him, which she did after taking one more look at Mammoth Mogul. He nodded to her, almost respectfully, before the door came between them.

Scratch said nothing as he led her back to the elevator and waited for it to take them to the basement, where there were tons and tons of power boxes lined up along the walls. He brought Kay to an isolated room that had a bed and a small window that gave her a front-row seat to the grass along the building. Once she had walked inside, Scratch closed the door behind her and locked it.

“You might as well get comfortable,” he said. “You’re going to be here for a long time. Ba-ha-ha-ha!” With that, he turned his back to her and disappeared. Kay stared at the spot where he’d been and thought to herself. Scratch really had changed since he’d been discarded by Eggman and hired by Mogul. Kay wondered just what had happened to him. He used to be a fun villain (not to mention a stupid one), but now he was more serious and almost seemed smart. Had Mogul done something to him to make him more to the mammoth’s liking?

If that’s the case, Kay decided, Mogul is on the bottom of my favorites list. She finally sighed and sat down on the bed provided. You go ahead and think that I’ll be here forever if it makes you feel better, Scratch. Kay pulled out Espio’s gift and held it in her palm. I have a feeling I’ll be out of here soon.
