Chapter Thirteen

Four hours later, Kay hadn’t gone anywhere. She paced back and forth across her “room” just to feel like she was doing something and muttered, “I’m waaaaaiiiting….” Then she sighed. “I could really use a hero right about now.”

“Did somebody call for a rescue?” a voice asked behind her. Kay whirled around and was surprised to see a certain blue hedgehog grinning at her through the window.

“Sonic?!” Kay exclaimed. “What are you doing here? I thought…” She stopped herself. She had been about to say, I thought you were in the Wolf Pack Nation. Instead she remembered where she’d last seen him and said, “I thought you were back in the city.”

“Oh, I was just passing through and heard you were in the area, so I figured I’d stop by for a visit,” Sonic told her, leaning back comfortably. “How’s life today?”

“Let’s see…” Kay mock pondered. She named off each event on her fingers. “Elias and Bunnie left, Antoine got hurt, and I was kidnapped by Eggman and locked in the basement of a casino owned by Mammoth Mogul.”

“Just another day on the job, huh?”

“I guess.”

Sonic laughed. “Don’t worry. I’ll have you out of there faster than you can say, ‘Sonic’s the best.’” And before Kay could say anything else, he was gone. She smirked and crossed her arms.

“Sonic’s the best,” she said.

“You got that right,” Sonic replied. Kay spun around to see him standing on the other side of her door in the basement. She looked back up at the window where he’d just been and laughed, remembering all the times he’d pulled similar tricks in the comics and TV series.

She stepped closer to the door and asked, “Now how do you plan to get the door open, wise guy?”

“Ha! You don’t think I can handle a little door like this?” Sonic scoffed. “Stand back and prepare to be amazed.” Kay did exactly that, and Sonic threw his triple-spin into action, tearing right through the door in no time. He landed gracefully on his feet and gave her a look. “Well, doubter, what do you think of that?”

“All right, all right.” Kay held up her hands in surrender. “I should’ve known that would be a piece of cake for you.”

Sonic laughed again. “Come on. I don’t like the environment down here.” He gave her room a disapproving look as he grabbed her hand and bolted. Seconds later they were on the main level of the casino, where there was plenty of light and noise. “Now this is more like it.”

Kay took a glance around. This level was pretty much the same as the top level she’d first seen when Scratch and brought her inside, only there was a DJ and a dance floor here. She could see mostly everyone jumping up and down to the upbeat music. And, weaving in between people, she could also see a small green robot with a drill for a nose.

“Grounder!” she exclaimed before she could stop herself. Sonic followed her gaze and blinked in surprise.

“Wow,” he muttered. “That’s a face I haven’t seen in a long time.” He gave her hand a tug, indicating for her to follow him in a casual walk towards the exit. He looked at her. “How do you know Grounder?”

Kay began to panic. This is what you get for speaking before you think, she scolded herself. “Uh…” she stammered, scrambling to find a good answer. Luckily for her, at that very moment she bumped into something hard, and when she staggered back she saw Scratch turning to look down over his shoulder at her. Kay gasped.

“Whoa. Today must be flashback Friday or something,” Sonic remarked, staring up at the robotic chicken in awe.

Scratch noticed him standing at Kay’s side and exclaimed, “Sonic!” Then he looked back and forth between the two and his eyes narrowed. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“To the dance floor,” Sonic replied quickly. He put his arm around Kay’s waist and pulled her to him. “I want to give this beauty a night to remember.” Kay felt herself blush.

“Oh, no.” Scratch shook his head. “Your tricks won’t work this time, hedgehog. I know better than that.”

“Really now,” Sonic said, unconvinced.

“Besides, I’d like her to stick around. I’ve never met one of my fans before,” Scratch added. A red warning light flashed in Kay’s head and she felt her heart start pounding nervously. How does he know about that? she exclaimed in her mind. But while she was busy panicking, Sonic only laughed.

“Hahaha! In your dreams, chicken-brain. Like anyone in their right mind is a fan of you.” Sonic grabbed Kay’s hand a third time. “Come on, Kay. Let’s blow this pop-stand.” Then he sped off, leaving Scratch in a cloud of dust.

“Get back here, hedgehog!” he yelled after Sonic.

Kay was still in shock about Scratch’s comment, so it took her a moment to be able to ask, “W-where are we going?”

“To the dance floor,” Sonic replied just moments before he skidded to a stop in an isolated corner. “I wasn’t kidding about that. Shall we?” He offered his hand to her. Again Kay felt herself blushing.

“Um…sure…” She took his hand slowly, and he pulled her closer to him, already beginning to sway. The DJ had uncanny timing and had just put on a slow song. Kay was certain her cheeks were red as cherries.

“So Kay, I’m curious: why is it that suddenly every bad guy on Mobius is after you?” Sonic asked as they danced. Kay paused before answering. Should I tell him? she asked herself. She imagined his reaction and decided against it. She didn’t want to ruin the moment.

“I have a lot of knowledge, and knowledge is power, I guess,” she told him.

“What kind of knowledge?”

“Um…” Kay again panicked and tried to find a convincing answer. The pause was just beginning to grow too long when she was saved again.

“Uh-oh,” Sonic said. “We’d better get out of here.” Kay looked over her shoulder to see that both Scratch and Grounder were heading right for them, glaring. Apparently they still had some part of their old lives left in them.

“I’m ready when you are,” Kay told him.

“Then let’s juice.” Sonic literally swept Kay off her feet and held her bridal style, zooming out of the casino in a hurry and leaving the old badniks behind.

Kay thought, I seriously need to start rehearsing my answers to questions like that or everyone is going to suspect something. Then I’ll really be in trouble. I don’t want to have both Eggman and the Freedom Fighters working against me. She closed her eyes as Sonic raced them both back to New Mobotropolis.
