Chapter Seven

Was it an echo of her own breathing Kay heard, or was someone speaking? With the ringing in her ears it was too hard to tell. Still, she thought she heard something…

“Hey, wake up.” A voice made itself known in the eerie silence. Kay frowned, confused. She felt something against her shoulder. “Wake up.” She had to know what it was. Slowly, she opened her eyes, a gentle light flooding her vision followed closely by a silhouette of someone. She squinted, and the figure came into slightly better focus. “Are you all right?”

Still trying to wake up, Kay blinked a few times and mumbled, “Huh?”

“Were you on Eggman’s carrier?” The voice asked.

Memories rushed back to her then. She vaguely recalled jumping from the carrier as the echidnas attacked it. She remembered falling, pulling herself up over the ledge…Kay sighed. “Yeah, I was.” She moved to sit up, but the ache in her arm muscles made her stop and moan.

“Are you injured?” The figure beside her asked. It sounded like a male’s voice, and it sounded worried. Kay paused a moment to feel for any more wounds.

“My arms are sore, but otherwise I think I’m okay,” she replied. As she forced herself to bear the pain long enough to sit up, she realized that the sky had turned a dark shade of pink. She stared. “Sunset?” Already? Kay turned to the figure beside her and stopped short. She knew him. He was Valdez, Espio’s mentor. “Do you know how long I’ve been unconscious?”

“Well, we shot down the carrier a few hours ago,” Valdez answered slowly, watching her with interest.

“And Eggman?”

Valdez sighed. “He got away again.”

“Were you a prisoner?” Valdez asked.

Kay nodded, thinking back to her capture in Freedom HQ. Suddenly she remembered the Chaotix and frowned. “I really hope the Freedom Fighters aren’t looking for me.”

Valdez cocked his head. “The Freedom Fighters?”

“They took me in earlier today,” Kay explained. A thoughtful look crossed the blue chameleon’s face.

“I know a few Freedom Fighters. I can contact them and let them know where you are.”

“Really?” Kay asked. Valdez nodded. “Thank you.”

“Not a problem. Can you stand?”

“I think so.” Kay attempted to rise without using her arm muscles too much, and with Valdez’s help this was easily done. The chameleon then began leading her farther inland.

They walked for a little bit until they came to a tall stone structure. Kay recognized it immediately, and she trailed her gaze upwards until she found the grand prize. Its sheer size and beauty stopped her in her tracks. All she could do was stare.

Even though she already knew the answer, she played the part of intrigued newcomer and asked Valdez, “Is that the Master Emerald?”

“Yes it is,” he replied. “Guardian Knuckles is away at the moment so I’m in charge of protecting it.” There was a pause as he watched her awed expression. Finally he smiled a little and said, “Would you like to get a closer look?”

Kay couldn’t help the grin that appeared on her face as she answered, “Sure.”

Valdez stepped forward and led her up the steep stairs to the place where the Master Emerald sat, glowing fiercely. The closer she got to it, the more Kay could feel its energy. It was too amazing to describe.

“Wow…” Kay muttered, unable to think of anything else to say. She was hypnotized by its pulsing glow. She dared to take one step closer, and when she did, the Emerald’s brightness intensified. Things began to take shape within the green glow.

Kay saw Elias Acorn, the former king of New Mobotropolis, running through a dark cave with two girls close behind. She saw them split up, each taking a different tunnel. A sudden flash of fire began chasing after Elias and he ducked to the side just in time, shaking nervously. The image then warped to a different scene, where he and the girls leapt from the cave opening and began falling further and further down a deep, dark hole. King Naugus was laughing…

And then it was just a green pulse once more. “Wait!” Kay gasped, thrusting out a hand. But it did no good. The images were gone.

Kay stood contemplating what she’d just seen. She recognized each of the scenes from her comics, but seeing them actually happening in real life was astounding. To actually see Elias in action was…well…unbelievable. She stepped away from the Emerald.

“Are you okay?” Valdez asked, his voice quiet. She turned to him.

“Did you see that?”

“I saw the Master Emerald react very strongly to you…” Valdez said carefully. He frowned. “It’s possible you saw something.”

“I—” Kay had to stop herself before she said anything. After all, the people she’d just seen were Secret Freedom Fighters. She had to settle with, “I did see something.”

“Interesting,” Valdez muttered, looking at her with new curiosity. “Let me call Guardian Knuckles. He can take you back to the Freedom Fighters and possible explain what happened just now.” With one last look at her, the chameleon started down the steps. Kay looked back at the Master Emerald with a newfound respect before following his lead.

A few minutes later, a warp ring appeared before the two of them and Knuckles stepped through, smiling. “Hey there. I’m glad you’re all right. The Chaotix will be relieved.” Kay remembered the looks on Vector’s and Espio’s faces when she was being carried away. Knuckles turned to the blue chameleon beside her and shook his hand. “Thanks for looking out for her, Valdez.”

Valdez nodded in response. “Always happy to help, my friend.”

Knuckles smiled and stepped back towards the warp ring, waving for Kay to follow him. “Come on Kay. The guys will be happy to see that you’re all right.”

Kay walked forward, stopping just before stepping through to look back at Valdez. He watched her solemnly, nodding once. Kay knew he wanted her to bring up the Emerald incident herself, so she nodded back to let him know she would. Then she left Angel Island behind.
