Chapter Eleven

As she walked through the city, all Kay could think about was Antoine. Those voices were still pestering her. Antoine, they said. You could have saved Antoine. Finally, she sighed in frustration and began mumbling to herself. “Was it wrong to just stand by and watch? At least I know that since I preserved the timeline both of them will live. I know everyone’s hurting, but it would have been much worse if the king had died.”

Kay paused to think about all that could go wrong if Elias died. Naugus would permanently become king since Sally wasn’t around to take over. The Freedom Fighters would forever be separated and there never would be Secret Freedom Fighters. Not only that, but that would be the second husband Queen Megan lost in a short time.

That would be horrible, Kay concluded. “I think I made the right choice. This way Elias will be king again and Antoine can have a chance to heal.” Then her thoughts drifted to the commander, lying wounded in a hospital bed while his distraught wife bawled at his side. “Still…maybe I should go see him. I can apologize even though he can’t hear me. It might make me feel better.”

The more she thought about it, the more she liked the idea. Finally deciding that’s what she would do, she took a quick glance around and tried to see the top of the hospital from where she stood by the Lake of Rings. After a moment she located it and began to speed-walk towards it.

A few minutes later she took a left and started towards the double-door entrance. She was just about to open the door when someone from inside opened it from inside and bumped into her. Kay stumbled back, caught off-guard.

“Oh, I’m sorry!” a voice exclaimed.

“It’s okay,” Kay replied as she focused her attention on the person who had bumped into her. He was a silver hedgehog with shining gold eyes. Kay stared. “Silver?”

The hedgehog cocked his head at her. “Have we met?”

“No…” Kay started. I did it again, she grumbled to herself. “But you’re pretty popular around here.”

“Great. Just what I need,” Silver sighed.

It was all coming back to her now. She remembered reading about this. Shortly after Antoine’s sacrifice, Silver had shown up claiming the commander was a traitor. In a flash of fury Sonic dragged him to the hospital to show him just how much of a “traitor” Antoine was. Afterwards Sonic told Silver to get out of his sight. Kay took in Silver’s distressed look and decided, that must be what he’s doing.

“Have you seen Antoine?” she asked even though she already knew the answer.

Silver nodded and pointed skywards. “Third floor.”

“How is he?”

“Alive, but not good. He’s in a coma right now.”

Kay then remembered Bunnie. She knew that Antoine’s wife would eventually head out to a mysterious destination but failed to recall if she was still up there right now. “Is Bunnie with him?” she asked Silver.

“His wife, Bunnie.”

“I didn’t see her.”

Then she’s already left, and by now Sonic has found the note. She nodded her appreciation to Silver and said, “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it,” he muttered in reply, sounding like he meant it. Then he proceeded to walk away, his ears drooped and head down.

Kay now stood alone at the entrance to the hospital. She sighed and looked around, trying to decide whether to visit Antoine now. She noticed the gold statue of Tommy Turtle, a Mobian who had died to save the world from Eggman’s son, Adam, when he attempted to collect every Chaos Emerald in the universe. She remembered how upset Sonic had been for a long time afterwards.

I’m sure this business with Antoine isn’t making him feel any better, she thought. Finally she sighed and turned her back on the hospital. Maybe I should just stay out of it. They can get through this without me, and Antoine doesn’t even know I exist. What would my apology mean to him? With that thought in mind, Kay decided to head back to Freedom HQ.

Freedom HQ was located a good distance from the city limits, so in order to get there Kay had to travel through wide open fields. Her journey to the city had been uneventful and so she assumed her return trip would be safe as well. But that thought was quickly washed away when a dark shadow passed over her and she whirled around to see the Death Egg flying high above.

“I almost forgot to pick you up while I was in the area,” Doctor Eggman told her with a laugh. Moments later Kay could see something heading right for her at an incredible speed. She turned and ran, though she knew it was useless. She was just a few yards from the door to HQ when she felt something grab onto her arm and yank her into the air.

Espio must have heard the commotion from inside because he came running, slamming the door open as he did so. When he looked up and saw Kay being transported to the Death Egg, he growled.

“Espio!” Kay cried. Her She saw the chameleon take a stance, notice his injured arm, and clench his fist before pulling something from under his glove.

“Catch!” he called as he heaved the object into the air. Kay reached out with her free hand and struggled for a moment, but finally caught it. “Don’t worry! We’ll find you!”

Eggman’s laugh cackled through the outer speakers. “Good luck with that, because I’m taking her far away from here.” Suddenly all sunlight vanished as Kay was pulled inside the Death Egg and dropped to the floor. “Welcome back again, my dear. How was your trip to Angel Island?”

Kay’s arm stung from the sudden yank and now sudden drop, but she stood without a word and glared at the evil doctor. She clenched Espio’s gift in her other hand.

“Now, now, don’t be like that.” Eggman waggled a finger at her. “After all, I’ve had to pull quite a few strings to find a special escort just for you. I think you’ll be pleased with my choice.”

Kay heard a door open behind her and turned around, gasping when she saw who it was. He was tall, robotic, and had the appearance of a chicken. He also wore a black tux. A smirk crept across his face when she saw her reaction to him.

“This is Scratch,” Eggman said proudly, “one of my most brilliant inventions. I arranged for him to come all the way from the Casino Night Zone to pick you up and escort you there, where no one will think to find you.” The doctor tugged on his mustache and grinned. “Scratch?”

The robotic chicken grinned wickedly and grabbed her. His entire hand wrapped around her arm and he gave it a tug, prompting her to follow him. Kay was too stunned to resist, so she let the villain pull her into a small shuttle-like carrier.

“Oh, and by the way…” Eggman chuckled. “I think you’ll be happy to know that I’m allowing the princess to visit her brother soon. I know you’re a big supporter of his.”

Images flashed through Kay’s mind upon hearing his words. She remembered this as well, but she didn’t know the outcome. “Wait!” she gasped, whirling around. But before she could say anything else, the door of the shuttle closed behind her and she was trapped. A moment later, the shuttle jolted and Kay could feel an adrenaline rush similar to those she felt when a plane first took off.

“It’s too late now, hedgehog. The king is going to get what’s coming to him, and you’ll be too far away to warn anyone.” Scratch turned and gave her an evil grin. “But don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the Casino Night Zone.” Then he let out one of his famous cockadoodle-like laughs: “Ba-ha-ha-ha!”
