1. Daddy's Girl

We pull up into my dad's driveway, and sit there calmly for a minute.
"You don't have to do this, Laura." My mother says, breaking the silence.
"You can stay with me and George-" George. That pig that my mom married. After dad and her got divorced, she met George at work, blah blah blah, had sex, and out popped a kid. It was sickening. They had just met. Bad enough she had me when she was 15. Dad was good for her. He took her under his wing.
"I'm fine, mom. Dad will take care of me."
"Honey, I don't think he knows what he's doing-" she starts again.
"Uh huh. Says the woman who had sex on the third date."
"Don't bring that up-" I open the car door and an icy cold, early November air bites at my cheeks, making them flush red. "Laura, baby.." I hear my Mom's door slam shut as I walk around to the trunk and grab my suitcases. "Laura, I'm sorry."
"No you're not, mom. You always say you are, but you're not. That's why you're dropping me off here." I close the trunk and walk through the frozen grass, crunching beneath my Uggs.
"Laura!"
"That's me!" I respond in a quite rude manner. I get to the massive door, and ring the doorbell. Within 3 seconds, Marta is at the door.
"Oooh! Laurrrra! My baby!" She says with that Hispanic ring to her voice, just as I remembered.
"Hi Marta." I say giving her a tight squeeze.
"Herrrre, lemme take those forrrr you!" She says, taking my bags with no delay. Marta is my dad's house maid. But shes like family at this point. I step inside and smell that Yankee candle that I always send him for Christmas. It's apple cinnamon. His favorite.
"Laura!"
"DADDY!" I say jumping into his arms for a long time no see hug. He's wearing that blue sweater from Macy's that he bought when I was 6. He smelled just like sweet mint gum. Both of us did, it's kind of our thing.
"Oh sweetie, you've grown so much!!"
"Daddy I've missed you!" I exclaim, and my mom walks in the front door with her arms crossed over her pink coat.
"Lillian." Dad says clearing his throat, trying not to make eye contact.
"Daniel." She does the same right back.
"How.. How have you been lately?..." He asks, but I can tell he really doesn't care.
"Busy, actually I have errands to run. So I better get going." I can tell that she knows he doesn't care, too.
"Nice seeing you again."
"You too." She shuts the door.
"Not really!" We both bust out laughing.
"Oh, daddy!!" I jump right back in for a hug.
"Now sweetie, why don't you go upstairs and get unpacked, and we'll enjoy some tea. Sound nice?"
"Yeah! I'll be back!" I exclaim as I rush up the stairs, and down the large, open hall, until I reach a door. Behind this door is a room full of memories. Like that time when I was 7 and visiting dad, and I was jumping on the bed, and the bed boards cracked and I fell through! Or that time of my 11th birthday party, where we lit the fire place, but forgot to open the chimney, so my room was full of smoke. I turn the knob, and push open, inhaling the sweet smell of Pink Chiffon. I used to be OBSESSED with this stuff. It's just like I remember, my queen sized bed, flooded with pillows. My dresser table, lined up with old necklaces and friendship bracelets. That big stuffed lion daddy bought for me when we went to the circus. It's all coming back to me now, and before I know it, I'm fighting back the tears with a huge, stupid grin on my face. I rush over to my closet and open my suitcases, and start hanging things up. If I'm going to live in this room, in gonna have to change the color of those pepto-bismal pink walls. I grab a pair of jeans and a blue sweater, with a purple scarf, and throw them on. I grab some socks, and run back downstairs, and into the tea room, daddy and Sadie, our golden retriever, are there waiting.
