12. The Chase

Harry's P.O.V

"Ruby?"

My voice was sore and hoarse from repeating her name so much, darting down the dimly lit corridoors, bursting through and into random rooms, finding them empty and destroyed. Old papers, smashed windows. And the thing that frustrated me the most, were the tiny drops of blood spattered along the walls and the floors. It was scaring me, because I knew it was Ruby's blood.

I could only imagine the other things he was doing to make her suffer. What would he say to provoke her?

I was on floor two, reaching Room 278. That's when I heard screaming from the room above. Ruby wouldn't scream, she'd stay strong, right?  I felt my eyes widen, my heart pace sped up until it felt like it was going to bust out from my chest and then my legs decided to break into a run. I ran faster than I ever had at school, or on Sports Day. I just ran.

For Ruby.

Red's P.O.V

"WHAT?!" I hung up the phone and flung it into the fruit bowl, tears begginging to stream down my cheeks. Damn crying!

Zayn ran into the kitchen and saw me breathing heavily, arms braced on the sink sides for support.

"Red? Red! Talk to me, baby, what's going on?!" He fussed around me which I hated, but I never slapped him away, I just kept taking deep breaths.

"Red.." He said, worry visible in his voice.

I stopped, turned around, and looked at him with all the horror I could muster.

Zayn hooked one arm around my waist, slinging my arm over his shoulder. Just like I carried him the first night we met.

He called up the stairs to Niall who came rushing down straight away. Then the penny dropped.

They thought I was going into labour.

I wanted to giggle. At a time like this, I wanted to laugh.

"I'm not giving birth, you numpty!" I sniggered into Zayn's denim clad shoulder and he slung me not-so-gently onto the couch.

"What?! I've been chewing my nails off hoping you wouldn't give out for the past week! Don't do that to me ever again! You're nearly due anyway!" He muttered a very bad word under his breath before trudging up the stairs. That was when I remembered about my phone. I picked it up and Louis' voice rang through the receiving end.

"Red? Y'there now?"

I said I was and took some bread out the cupboard and slipped two slices into the toaster and tapped my fingers on the kitchen counter.

His breathing was heavy on the other end, laboured. Like he'd been running to reach his phone.

"What's wrong?"

There was a moment of hesitation on the other end, and then Louis' voice broke the silence with heart-wreching words.

"Ruby's been taken. And Harry thinks she's dead."

Harry's P.O.V

I'm not sure how long it took me to reach the third floor in time, but I finally reached the final room. My heart was pumping at an alarmingly fast speed and I felt muscle cramps spread throughout my body. This was horrific in its self, but not as bad as what I saw when I flung open the office door.

There was a single naked bulb hanging from the ceiling, its dim yellow light casted down on a hanging head of blood-soaked blonde hair.

"Ruby." It was supposed to sound triumphant, when really it sounded like I was repeating her name under my breath. Probably because I couldn't breathe.

Then, into the single spotlight, stepped the telepath. He grinned sadistically and patted the top of Ruby's limply hung head.

I saw that she was tied up to the chair, her ankles bound with tight-knotted ropes and her hands taped together behind her back. When the telepath tipped her head up by her chin, she looked like she'd been to hell and back. Her lips were sealed with grey ducktape and her skin looked pale and washed out. Her hair wasn't straight and badass like it was before, it hung dead and dull, soaked with blood. Tears streamed down her face as her cries were muffled by the tape and I felt anger surge through me like an electric charge.

"Let her go." I hissed, my fingers clenching into fists.

Despite all the other physical torture she'd been through, one little thing tugged on my heartstrings and made me think too-violent thoughts. Under her eyes, the telepath had made small crescent-shaped incisions with a blade. She was crying blood. And every time a tear slipped into the cuts, she screamed into the tape, writhing about in agony. It must've stung terribly.

I made a leap for the chair in a desperate attempt to rescue her, but was yanked back by the collar of my shirt.

"No y'don't." His breath blew into my ear, evil and angry. "You're getting the same treatment your little birdie's got here. I think it's going to be incredibly romantic, that the both of you should die simutaneously. Poetic, don't you think?"

He continued with this polite facade, circling me with the blade glinting under the dim light. Then he set to work, making Ruby watch through her tears of blood.

And the only thing I could hold onto was the deep look of desperation and love in her lost grey eyes.
