2. Anger Issues

I was scrubbing at my teeth with a toothbrush and picking on a loose thread on my pyjama shorts when I bumped into Harry Styles again.

He surveyed me with his green eyes, his lashes dark against his creamy skin. I stood and stared before anger flooded over me.

"How in godess' name did you get into my house?!"

Styles might've hot-wired many cars and broken my cousin out of jail more times than I'd like to say, but there was no way he could break into my house. Not when my brother was still breathing.

"Keep your knickers on! Your brother's conked out, I brought this with me just in case."

When Harry held up a crowbar, I knew instantly that he'd whacked Leon over the head with it. Taming my anger a little, I removed the toothbrush from my mouth and swayed my hips when I approached him. He grinned wickedly, but I obliterated that smile by spitting the minty foam I had into his face.

"You're lucky my brother drinks or I wouldn't be able to convince him it was simply a hangover. Now leave, Styles. Before I'm tempted to refill."

I shot an icy glare at his spattered face. The laughing I could save until later.

"Fine, but next time I'm in the middle of trying to murder someone, don't interrupt."

He turned away, his hands jammed into the front pockets of his jeans.

"Oh," I added, "don't forget to tell Red to come down and visit me sometime. I don't bite."

Harry stared at me for a while before tilting his head to one side and looking at me as if I had landd on earth only minutes ago.

"Will do," he murmured, "after wiping this shit of my face."

I let out an evil laugh. My, Harry Styles really WAS an idiot. There was a towel draped over the radiator which he was leaning on.

"Au revior, moron." I muttered, continuing to brush my teeth.

"Ciao, prostitute."

Really? That was low, even for Harry. My own COUSIN had called me more vile ones than that!

"Grow up." I tried to say, but it came out more like: "Gow up."

Harry slipped out my front door when I heard someone stirring in Leon's bedroom. I tiptoed upstairs and opened the door gently, spotting Leon's arm hanging limply from the duvet.

Setting my toothbrush on his bedside table, I tucked his arm under the covers and pulled the blanket up till it was covering his shoulders. When I saw the developing bruise spread on his cheekbone, I felt unbelievable fury wash over me. That stupid, pathetic, perverse, annoying, curlyhaired two balled bastard! If this left any kind of permanent mark, I'd hunt Harry down myself and kill him using telepathy only. I took off Leon's work boots and set them on the end of his bed before stroking his hair and kissing his forehead. A gesture his mum used to do.

"Night, Leon." I murmured.

Leon might've been a mild alcoholic, but I still loved him because, before his mum and dad died, he belonged to the only family who actually cared for me. He was the only person who loved me now. But not in the way I so desperately craved.

"Shhh. Go back to sleep."

If he didn't, I'd be the one to deal with his temper tantrums in the morning. He'd ask me how he got the bruise, and I'd say nothing. Stupid Harry.

"Okay, night Ruby. Love you."

"You too." I whispered.

I picked up my toothbrush and walked into the bathroom downstairs, throwing it in the sink. Goddess, how I needed sleep. Lots and lots of sleep.

Hours later, I woke up to a tap, tap, tap, on the window. I got up out of bed and an excrutiating ache swept through my mind.

"Godess, don't you ever give up?" I pulled the window open and moonlight lit up my bedroom. My best friend swung in through the open window and flashes a grin at me.

"Nope. You missed me."

I gulped. There was always one major down-side to being a telepath: other telepaths could pluck thoughts out your head without you knowing. I guess I had to put up shields.

Kayleb knew I wasn't good at speaking about my emotions, or any touchy-feely stuff like that. He knew me too well, with or without mental powers.

"Did I? I wasn't aware you could be missed." We both laughed and he punched me playfully on my shoulder.

"C'mon, I have a treat for you."

He grabbed my hand and pulled me through into the living room. Kayleb was sweet. . . sometimes. He had a horribly wonderful temper, and he would fly off the handle at even the smallest thing. I snatched back my wrist.

"Don't, Kayleb." I scowled at him and he scowled back, equally angry.

"Don't tell me what to do. I might be your friend, but I'm higher up the telepath blood-line. You're below me. You learn to respect me. Do you understand?"

Tears threatened to prick my eyes but I pushed them back. I never knew about Kaylebs family - if he had any - or other friends. He knew my parents were dead because I lived alone. And he never asked about it.

When a telepath is higher up in the blood-line, you look down to show respect, and do as they say. Kind of like you would to the alpha of a wolf pack.

"Yes, sir." I lowered my head and watched the floor intently.

"Oh, Rubes. Don't. Please." He tipped my chin up and brushed his lips alone my cheekbone. I didn't shiver, or pull him closer because I had managed to stop hormonal reactions all together. There was another thing you had to do, other than look down. To a higher telepath, you would always kiss both their cheeks when greeting them. Godess, at times like these I hated being one.

"I'm sorry. So sorry." Kayleb pulled me into a tight hug and I just went limp like a doll.

"You're right. I was completely disrespectful. I apolagize, sir." I kissed both his cheeks and he did the same to me.

"It's alright. You're forgiven." He brought me closer and stroked the back of my neck. Goosebumps rose on my arms. I swallowed.

"Where's my treat, then?" My dark humour came back easily - I didn't do awkward moments.

"Here." He closed his eyes and focused sending a message to me.

In the image he sent, I was standing on top of a cliff, staring out at a saphire-blue river. Green hills rolled along the horizon, and the sunset bathed everything in a sweet honey glow. I gasped and blinked a little.

"It was beautiful." he said fondly. "I stored it a few hours ago, just before the moon came."

I kissed his cheek out of pure grattitude. If I hadn't've been busy a few hours ago, he would've taken me with him - I was sure of it.

"Thank you."

"It's the least I could do. You were busy with somebody, I could sence it."

"Yeah, it was that curly-haired twat who gave my brother a bruise." I hissed through my teeth.

"Not Harry!" his icy blue eyes widened and his mouth hung open in shock.

"Yes, you know him?" I raised a suspicious eyebrow.

Kayleb suddenly flushed.

"I used to know his. . . best friend."

"Who was that?"

"Just a girl. She was a whore. Never liked her. She was a bitch, but not as bitchy as you." His eyes softened and he smirked, stroking my face gently.

"What was her name?" I slumped back onto the couch. It was obvious I wasn't going to get any sleep tonight.

"Something stupid. Why the heck would someone name their kid after a bloody colour?!" He sat beside me and I swung my legs over his. He patted my bare calf.

"Why, her name wasn't 'Green', was it?"

"No, it was Red."

I was torn at that moment. I couldn't kick him and break his leg because then I'd probably get killed. I couldn't laugh, because then it would make him angrier, which would result in my death. And I sure as hell couldn't ask him her last name, or he'd get too suspicious, find out, and then I'd die.

Basically, any route I chose, I'd probably die for it.

"R-Red?" I frowned.

"Yeah, Red Cassidy. Stupid whore."

Oh godess, help me. I was going to gut him.

"What did you just say?" I growled through clenched teeth.

"All I said was that she's a whore. Why do you care?"

"Kayleb, my name is Ruby Cassidy. CASSIDY! FOR GODESS SAKE, KAYLEB!" I was standing now, more angry and enraged than ever.

"Woah! Hold on Rubes! I didn't know!"

"AND THAT MAKES A GOD DAMN DIFFERENCE?!" I raised a fist and punched him in the jaw, sending the sofa flying back into the wall.

Me and Red might've never known we were cousins until last year, but when we were young, both our dad's knew how to fight. And they taught that to us. Cassidy's weren't the most gentle people, especially me and Red.

We'd been through too much to be gentle. Except, when Red's with Zayn, I see her eyes sparkle in a way that made me want to cry every time.

"Ruby! You can't do that to me!" he shouted, standing up to fight.

Aw shit, I'd done it now.
