Endlessly (A One Direction Love Story)

Anika has always been friends with Liam Payne. She forced him to play with her dolls when they were little, saw him in the front row at each of her dance recitals, forced him into the car for hours while she drove to auditions, and made him critique her every move at the studio. But two years ago, she sat backstage as her best friend sang his heart out for the second time. But this time, instead of coming home after two weeks, he was gone. For good. Liam and Ana still spend every waking hour together, but things are different. Niall and Ana are spending every waking hour together, and Liam's jealous. Will it be the classic story of the best friends who are meant to be, or are Liam and Ana destined to be... just friends?

7. Welcome to the Life

I dialed Niall's number and waited until his familiar voice answered. It'd been four days since Liam and I had gotten into a fight and I'd stayed in my flat the whole time, avoiding texts and phone calls and watching Pretty Little Liars over and over and eating an arse-load of pizza and order-out food.

"Ana! God, are you okay? You didn't answer any of my calls or texts!" Niall said as soon as he answered. I giggled and ran a hand through my hair.

"I'm fine, Niall. I was just... I needed a break. But now I'm over that and I need some cheering up. Some intense cheering up." I said.

"I can do that! Lazy day in or do you want to go on an adventure?" He asked. I giggled and thought for a second.

"I think I want to stay in today, but maybe we can go out later tonight." I suggested.

"I'll be over in an hour." Niall said. Then he hung up before I could respond.

"Well I'll see you soon!" I said to the flat line. I got out of bed and pulled on some jeans and a tee, with a grey jumper Niall had left in my bag. It was warm and smelled like him, all musty and manly. I brushed my hair and teeth, and decided to do my makeup. I steadied my hand enough to put on some eyeliner, then eyeshadow and mascara. I liked the way my eyes looked, and I smiled at myself in the mirror, at the newly straight and short hair, and my bright brown eyes. I crutched around the flat a few times to burn some calories and then turned on the kettle to make some tea. I could really use some Jade time in the next few days. I resolved to call her tomorrow when there was a knock on the door.

I hopped out and swung the door open to see Niall carrying three or four shopping bags.

"What on earth is this?" I asked, helping him set them down on the table. Niall laughed and dug around in the bags until he found a huge stuffed bear. I gasped and hugged it to my chest. It was nearly three kilos and was helplessly fluffy, and had a little bear tee on that said, "Beary Lucky to Have You." I made a puppy dog face at Niall, who laughed and pulled everything else out of the bags. There was some Grey Lady tea, biscuits, a few DVDs, a game of Sorry, and finger paints and a stack of paper.

"You are so weird." I said, looking at all the stuff. Niall laughed.

"I got this bear because it's kind of Irish... since it says lucky, I mean. That's about it." I snorted and hugged him, grabbing the box of tea and going to prepare it for us. We sat at the table and Niall set up the game of Sorry. After I beat him for the sixth time, he flipped the board over and stood up.

"We're done with this game!" He shouted. I laughed and grabbed the finger paints.

"This, then! Let's paint eachother!" I said. Niall laughed and grabbed a piece of paper and I did the same, and we used the primary colours and green to paint eachother. I made his face yellow and gave him a leprechaun hat with tons of blue freckles and a giant grin and bright blue eyes and lots of clovers in the back.

"You done?" Niall asked for the fifth time. He had finished in less than a minute. I sighed and nodded finally.

"Calm your tits, I'm done!" I said. Niall laughed and held up his picture facing away from me. I did the same. "On the count of three? One." I started.

"Two." Niall grinned.

"Three!" I shouted, and we turned our pictures around.

Niall burst out laughing when he saw his, but I went scarlet and handed his over and took mine from his hands, with a giant smile on my face. Instead of drawing a picture, Niall had painted words all over mine. Beautiful, stunning, talented, amazing, perfect, adorable, sassy, sweet. I grinned and touched Niall's hand.

"I love it!" I said. Niall blushed and smiled proudly, puffing out his chest like a baby rooster. I laughed and grabbed a pin out of my kitchen drawer. "Sign it!" I commanded, handing him a pen. Niall signed his name in the corner and I pinned the picture to the wall next to the table. "TA DA!" I said, doing the Wheel of Fortune presenter lady hand guesture. Niall laughed and set his on the counter.

"Come over later and we can hang mine next to our platinum record!" Niall said. I laughed and flipped through the DVDs.

"Finding Nemo! Can we watch it?" I begged. Niall laughed and nodded, and went to prepare some soup while I set up the movie. He came back in and handed me a bowl, then sat down on the couch next to me. I threw a pillow at the light switch, and with my impeccable aim it hit nothing and the lights stayed on. I looked at Niall with a stupid look on my face and he laughed and got up, shutting the lights out. The movie started and in under five minutes Niall was quietly crying. I transitioned between laughing and awwing as I rubbed his back. By the time the movie was over, Niall and I were both half asleep.

"Well, now what?" I asked. Niall shrugged, getting the dishes and putting them in the sink. I got a glass of water and sat on the counter across from him.

"Why did you need cheering up?" Niall asked, staring at me with soft eyes. I sighed and shrugged.

"Just got in a pretty big fight with Liam when I got back the other day and he said some things." I said finally. Niall looked at me with his head tilted to the side a bit. I sighed, knowing I couldn't deny those eyes and that I was going to end up telling him everything.

"He told me I wasn't allowed to see you and that he loved me. And that I was a slut and he thought I was fucking you." I said. Niall's face went hard.

"What kind of person says that! I can't believe he would say that to you! You are not a slut, Ana. And how could he think I'd do something like that? I'm not that kind of guy and you are NOT that kind of girl! And he calls himself your best friend. No wonder Danielle broke up with him, he's out of control. I'm gona go set him straight." Niall said, storming out of the kitchen. I hopped off the counter and followed him slowly.

"Niall, don't!" I sighed, hopping after him into the dining room. He was grabbing his keys and jacket, his hand on the door knob. "It's not worth it!" I said. Niall shook his head.

"It's more than worth it, Ana. He shouldn't have said any of that, he has absolutely no right!" Niall shouted, his eyes fierce.

"Niall, please. I just... he can think whatever he wants. It doesn't matter to me. He's only saying it because he's jealous that I'm spending so much time with you. He thinks you're his competition." I said. Niall stared at me.

"Why wouldn't I be? I mean I get that a girl like you would never be interested in me, but you say it like I'm never anybody's competition, like I'm not good enough." Niall said, looking hurt. I sighed and shook my head.

"I didn't mean it like that, I just don't know what I meant. But I didn't mean that. You're more than good enough. I just meant that Liam feels threatened by you because he messed up and you didn't, and you're still here and he isn't." I said.

"I'm here because you called me, because you wanted me here and not him. He needs to get it through his head that I'm not choosing to have you trust me, the only reason you do is because I actually care about you and he only cares about himself." Niall said, turning the knob and swinging the door open. "I'm going to talk to him."

"Don't! Can't you see this will only make things worse! He already doesn't want me spending time with you and I don't want this to tear you two apart!" I begged. Niall looked at me, and he looked almost broken.

"I'd do anything to make you happy, Ana. And he's making you sad. I can't sit here and watch you feel like this. It hurts me more than it hurts you, believe me." Niall said.

"I do believe you, Niall. I just want you here with me, not there fighting with him." I sank down into a chair and stared at him, willing him to stay. Finally Niall pulled the door shut and took off his jacket. he det his keys on the table and walked over, lifting me up in his arms and carrying me to my room.

"Anything for you, princess." He whispered as he layed me down in my bed and climbed under the covers with me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me to him. I buried my head in his chest and tangled our feet together. Why was it so hard to picture myself with Niall? The sharp, stubborn girl with the sweet, innocent boy? But one thing was so clear to me now: Niall was truly, head over heals in love with me. And I had no idea how I felt for him. Earlier, when we weren't as close, I couldn't help but notice how cute he was and have a tiny crush on him. But now that I realised how he felt about me, now that we were here curled up in my bed together, I couldn't even begin to understand how I felt. And it was terrifying.

"Niall?" I asked. Niall looked down at me, his eyes wet. I wiped a tear off his cheek and he laughed, embarrased that he had been caught crying. "Am I pretty?" I asked. Niall laughed and pushed a hair away from my face. His eyes were so soft and broken, and he looked at me like he couldn't believe I had just asked him that.

"You're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. You're freckles are like a million tiny hearts, and your eyes are like chocolate candies. And you've got cheekbones like a Disney Princess. Plus, you've got green hair. It doesn't get much bettter than that. The thing is, you aren't pretty at all. You're absolutely stunning. When you walk in, it's like the lights in the room have exploded and you're so glowing and vibrant." He said, stroking my hair. I let out a breath and pressed my head into his chest. Niall kept on stroking my hair and sliding it back and forth between his fingers.

"Ana? Do you think... you could ever like me as more than a friend?" Niall asked, his chin resting on the top of my head. I closed my eyes and tightened my grip around his stomach.

"I-I don't really know, Niall. I've been trying to figure out the answer to that question for a while." I admitted. Niall nodded and sighed.

"Just... let me know. Or don't. Whatever makes you happy is what I want." Niall said. I felt tears coming to my eyes. Jesus, I've cried a lot lately. Life sucks.

"I'll let you know, Niall." I said.  I opened my eyes and saw a pinky sticking in front of my face. I laughed and wrapped my pinky around his, squeezing tight.

"Let's go do something." I said, sitting up and keeping my finger wrapped around his. Niall sat up too and looked at me.

"Whatever you want." he said.

"Stahp that. Let's go buy you some testicles. Man up, Horan. What do you want to do?" I asked. Niall laughed and shrugged.

"I'm going to take you on a date. Tonight you're going to feel like a princess." He said. I laughed and bounced on the bed.

"Yay! Now get out and get yourself all dapper-ed up, I have a dress to put on and hair to curl and makeup to do and shoes to pretend I can walk in!" I said. Niall laughed and kissed me on the cheek, promising to be back in an hour to take me out.
