Endlessly (A One Direction Love Story)

Anika has always been friends with Liam Payne. She forced him to play with her dolls when they were little, saw him in the front row at each of her dance recitals, forced him into the car for hours while she drove to auditions, and made him critique her every move at the studio. But two years ago, she sat backstage as her best friend sang his heart out for the second time. But this time, instead of coming home after two weeks, he was gone. For good. Liam and Ana still spend every waking hour together, but things are different. Niall and Ana are spending every waking hour together, and Liam's jealous. Will it be the classic story of the best friends who are meant to be, or are Liam and Ana destined to be... just friends?

5. New Girl

"Alright, ready to see it?" Niall asked. His warm hands were covering my eyes. I bit my lip. I'd had my face turned from the mirror the whole time the woman was doing my hair the way Niall had picked, and I was nervously awaiting the reveal.

"Ready." I said. Niall spun the chair around and dropped his hands away from my eyes. My mouth fell open. My normally long wavy hair was pin straight and cut to shoulder length. It was a shade lighter and had lots of low lights. My eyebrows were plucked to perfection and I saw a streak of green hair peaking out of the bottom of my hair. Niall watched my every move as I examined my new look. He pushed my hair back and showed me the green streak.

"I had to ask her to do this. If you don't like it... sorry. I guess there's nothing we can really do if you don't like it." He said, nervously rubbing the streak of hair between his fingers. I reached up and grabbed his hand, squeezing it reassuringly.

"No, Niall. I absolutely love it. It's like I'll have a little piece of you with me everywhere. And by that I mean when I don't have my phone since you've sort of taken that over too." I said. Niall laughed and laced our fingers together before grabbing my other hand and pulling me out of the chair and handing me my crutches. I got to my feet and glanced at the pile of my hair on the floor. Almost ten inches of it had been cut off... but I liked what Niall had done. It was like a new me. I was no longer a dancer, so I could be anything I wanted.

"Let's go get something to eat." I said, while I swung myself up to the counter and paid the woman.

"You look beautiful." The lady said sweetly while she rung up the total. I winced at the cost and handed over the money.

"She does, doesn't she?" Niall said, grinning at me. I blushed and wished I could hide behind my hair, but I had a lot less hair than I expected and he chuckled at my blush.

"Are you that boy from One Direction?" A woman asked. Niall turned to her and smile weakly, nodding. The lady pulled out a magazine that she had bought for her daughter and asked Niall to sign it. "Is this your new girlfriend that's in all of the magazines?" She asked, looking me up and down.

"She's just my friend." Niall said, looking at me awkwardly.

"Good, I didn't want to be the one breaking the news that she's cheating on you with Liam." The lady said. Niall looked at me with a face of pure confusion. I mirrorred his look and then looked at the woman.

"Sorry, what are you talking about?" I asked. The lady flipped to a page in the magazine and held up a fuzzy picture of me and Liam hugging in his flat after we had gotten into the fight over the picture. The angle it was taken at... it looked like we were kissing. Niall squinted at the picture and looked at me, his face almost looked... sad. "We weren't kissing, if that's what you're trying to say in your stupid little passive aggressive way. Liam has a girlfriend and I'm not some sort of easy skank." I snapped, flipping the magazine shut and shoving it at the woman.

"My daughter would disagree with that statement." The woman said rudely. I burst out laughing.

"And I bet your daughter is some ugly teenage girl who's jealous of me for kissing Niall under some mistletoe that I didn't even know was there, and the only reason she thinks I'm a skank is because there's some stupid little part of her mind that thinks she actually has a shot with Niall." I snapped, glaring at the woman. Niall stepped between us and put a hand on my arm.

"I'm so sorry, all of this stupid drama is really getting to her and I'd really appreciate if you didn't accuse her of things like this. She's an amazing girl and doesn't deserve to be treated the way you're treating her. In case you didn't notice, she's got a pretty serious injury on top of all of the lies you and the paparrazzi are spreading, so please apologize." Niall said, his face dead serious. The woman crossed her arms and stared between us.

"She's got you wrapped around her little finger. I thought my daughter would look up to someone with a little more intelligence than you." She said, glaring at Niall and looking me up and down. Niall took the magazine from the woman and ripped it right in half, totally destroying his autograph. He handed the magazine back to the woman and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, guiding me out of the salon. We walked in silence past some men with cameras that had probably recorded the whole arguement. Niall pulled open is car door and helped me inside. Then he walked around and got in his side and drove off, not even bothering to turn on the radio.

"Niall, where are we going?" I asked when we sped past our buildings. Niall shrugged.

"I don't know, we're driving for however long it takes for me to stop wanting to go back and rip her fucking head off." He said, staring sharply at the road and slamming his foot on the gas when the light turned green. "This isn't a fucking school zone, speed up!" He shouted at the car in front of us, slamming his hand on the steering wheel. Niall took a sharp right turn and sped off on a long road. Eventually the tall buildings and the busy city life faded off and we were driving next to a train track. I had been silent the whole time, and the clock said it had been nearly two hours. Niall was still fuming.

"Niall?"  I asked. putting my hand over his which was resting on the shift. Niall looked at me and reached out, touching the green streak in my hair. "Pull over?" I asked. Niall sighed and pulled over on the side of the road, turning the lights on. He sat back in his seat and took the seatbelt off.

"Now what?" He asked. Niall seemed less mad... But I wasn't sure what he was so mad over.

"So... what's up? Why did you get so mad about what happened back there?" I asked, unbuckling and sitting back. Niall climbed into the backseat and pulled me with him. I climbed back and curled up next to him with my feet propped next to his on the dash. Niall sighed and stared at his hands.

"I wish that the paps didn't record every waking moment of our lives. I wish I could get away from. I haven't had a girlfriend since One Direction started because my personal life... isn't personal anymore and I hate it. I want a girl to care about and spoil and call at three in the morning because I'm bored and I know she'll answer no matter what. And I can't have that because when you're famous you never really know who's in it for you behind the band, or who's in it for the you that's in the band and on the cover of the magazines." Niall said. I took his hand and laced our fingers together.

"Well I'm friends with the Niall who painted my toenails even though my feet are disgusting. I'm friends with the Niall who puts his own stupid face as my phone background. I'm friends with the Niall who flips to a random page in a magazine and made my hair look like the girl in the ad. And I'm definitely friends with the Niall who helped me kick Liam's ass at Fifa." I said. Niall laughed and rested his head on the read rest. He closed his eyes and then opened his eyes wide again.

"Hold on." He said, dropping my hand and climbing into the front seat of the car. He fiddled with the buttons and locked the doors a couple of times, then accidently blared the radio, and finally opened the moon roof. Niall had a satisfied smile like a kid in a candy store (saving that idea for later when I was ready for a teenage boy acting like a little kid) and climbed back into the back seat with me. He grabbed my hand again and we stretched out so we could see out the moon roof.

"You usually can't see the stars in the city." Niall said, his lips were curled up a little at the edge and he had a faint smile line in his cheek. I reached out and poked it. Niall looked at me with his eyebrows wrinkled. I grinned at him and rested my head on the seat, staring at the stars. I could feel his eyes on me, but I resisted the urge to look over. Niall leaned over and kissed my cheek, holding his lips there for a few seconds. "Thanks, for everything." Niall said. I turned to face him and smiled at him. I felt like a whole new me, sitting in the back seat of Niall's car staring at the stars with short hair and a cast on my foot.

"A shooting star!" Niall said, pointing at a light shooting across the sky.

"Hate to rain on your parade, but that's a plane, Niall." I said. Niall put his hand over my mouth and shook his head.

"Shush! You're ruining the magic, Ana." Niall said. He squeezed his eyes shut, and I knew he was making a wish. I gave up being the Ana that was flat out and didn't make wishes and pray and stuff, and I closed my eyes and thought of something to wish for. I felt Niall's grip on my hand tighten. I let out a breath and wished. I wish things could stay like this forever. I wish that I'd always feel this... happy and welcome and like no one could see me even when I was alone. That life could be this simple always. I bit my lip and opened my eyes again. Niall's eyes were open and he was staring out of the roof again. Snowflakes were swirling around in the frosty air and were settling in Niall's hair and on his eyelashes. I reached out and ruffled his hair, and a cloud of snow flew everywhere. Niall laughed and sat up.

"We should probably get going..." He said. I knew he wanted to stay here just as much as I did.

"I have an idea." I said. Niall watched as I climbed over the backseat and looked in the trunk.

"There's just emergency blankets and things back there." He said, leaning over my shoulder.

"Perfect!" I said, grabbing the pile of blankets and pulling them into the backseat with us. "How about we don't go back tonight? We can just have like a camping trip... in your car. Whatever." I said, looking hopefully at Niall. He smiled at me and reached up, closing the moon roof. We turned the radio on and listened to some music, singing along and cuddling up under the blankets. My head was stuffed into Niall's shoulder when my eyes started to flutter closed. I felt myself falling asleep, slowly.

After about ten minutes Ana's eyes fluttered closed and her breathing slowed. I rested my head on hers, inspecting her upturned nose littered with freckles. I liked her new hair... She was the still Ana, but somehow she was different. Suddenly, my phone started to ring. I glanced at Ana as I silenced it. She didn't wake up, but her hand tightened around mine for a moment. I pressed TALK and put the phone to my ear, speaking quietly so she wouldn't wake up.

"Hello?" I asked

"Niall? It's Liam." Liam said on the other end.

"What's up man?"

"Have you seen this picture of me and Ana?" He asked. I sighed.

"Yeah, we sort of got into a yelling match with some woman over it." I said. Liam sighed and I knew he was pacing.

"Danielle's mad. Mad, man. She said we should take a break." He said. I could hear his voice shaking. Liam was beat up about this.

"Man, I'm sorry! Maybe she'll come to her senses about it and know nothing was really happening." I said weakly. Liam sighed again. Geeze, he sighed a lot.

"That's the thing... I kind of want something to be happening. I've liked Ana for a long time, but she's never been the settling down type of I kind of gave up." He said. I felt my heart plummet.

"Oh... well maybe you don't like her as much as you think. I mean, if it was really important I don't think you would have given up that easily." I suggested. I looked down at Ana. She snuggled closer to me and made a tiny noise in her sleep.

"I don't know, man. What was that? Do you have a girl over?" Liam asked. I gulped. Shit. He would be pissed if he knew Ana and I were sleeping in the back of my car.

"Oh, know I just, erm, stubbed my toe." I suggested. Liam was quiet for a second.

"Is Ana at your place?" He asked. I held my breath.

"Nah, Man." I said. Technically I wasn't lying. We weren't at my place. We were in my car.

"Okay. Well.... I guess I'll see you tomorrow. Night." Liam said.

"Night. I hope things get better and Danielle realises she messed up." I supplied. Liam yawned.

"I'm not sure that I want that. Oh well. Bye." Liam said, and hung up. I hit end and stared down at my phone. Ana sniffled in her sleep and wrapped her arm around my waist. She was so cute when she slept. Her forehead didn't have the little dimple it did when she was awake, her face seemed softer and less harsh. I know it was stupid of me, but I opened my camera on my phone and took a picture. Then I pressed my lips to her forehead and shut off the car before resting my head on hers and slowly falling asleep.
