20. Epilogue *Six years later*

Honey? Can you grab me Riley’s bottle on the top shelf?” I yell to Nick, as I cradle my 7 month old baby boy, Riley.

“Yeah!” he calls back with a slight chuckle.

I remember him having a tickle daddy session as I was leaving to hold Riley. Natalie and Nicole, our six year old twin girls, were giggling so loud I almost told them to quiet down, but honestly, who wants to silence the best sound to a mom’s ear?

As I sang softly to Riley as he whimpered a little bit, just waking up from his nap, Nick came in smiling and handing me Riley’s Spiderman bottle, warm from the microwave. Nick gently kissed his head, then kissed me slightly longer than our usual pecks.

“Well hello, to you,” I smirked, propping Riley’s head to feed him.

“Just wanted to give you a proper kiss,” he smiled. “Gosh, I love you.”

“And I you,” I giggled at his odd behavior. I didn’t think he knew, but he seemed as though he knew my short kept secret. He couldn’t have figured it out just yet!

Just as he was turning to leave, David, our 3 year old, came running in without pants on.

“Son? What did I tell you about wearing pants?” Nick joked, with his hands on his hips.

“To only wear them when necessary,” he grinned, looking proud of himself, yet he stumbled over the word ‘necessary’.

“That’s right! But I hate to break it to you, bud; it’s necessary,” Nick smiled and picked him up, taking him to the bathroom to wash up.

I shook my head and kept humming to Riley as he drank his bottle. His hands were so tiny as they tried to grip the bottle. It was such a sweet sight to see. I rocked back and forth on the old rocking chair Mama Jonas had given me. She had used it with her children so she thought it was best to give it to the two of us.

Here’s the run down. Nick and I started trying to have a family the night of our wedding. Unfortunately, it took us several months for us to finally get pregnant (April-June, to be exact), but we did get pregnant! We ended up having beautiful twin girls, Natalie Jess and Nicole Marie Jonas. About 3 years later, we decided to have another, since we already had two children, we wanted to wait a little bit longer (reference intended) for another. That’s when we had our boy David Adam Jonas. Nick was super excited about having a boy. He immediately decided we would sign him up for baseball when he gets older. About 2 years later, we had another boy, Riley James. The girls started to get irritated that they didn’t have a younger sister, but I really hoped this next one was the one. Yes, I said it. We were already pregnant with our 5th child. But the rest of the family doesn’t know my little secret, but I planned on telling them today. I went online with my stepmom, who was obviously thrilled that she was having another grandchild, and ordered Nick a shirt that said “Daddy of Five” on the front and JONAS, with a jersey 5, on the back. Nick and I had planned to stop at 4, but now another blessing would come into our lives. I also got a baby romper for Riley that says “I’m a big brother” on it.

When Riley had finished his bottle and I could hear Nick playing with the girls again and David running around the hallway, I closed the door quietly and changed Riley into his new romper. Then I pulled out the present I wrapped for Nick, that I hid in the back closet. I also had incased three pregnancy tests that had two pink lines on all three, in a plastic bag and put it in my pocket. I took a deep breath and smiled down at Riley.

“Are you ready to announce being a big brother?” I asked him. He giggled and I couldn’t help but giggle too.

I took a deep breath and opened the door, walking to the living room.

“Hey you kiddies!” I caught the twins’ attention.

“Hi mommy!” They ran up and gave me big hugs.

“Mommy has something to give Daddy. Wanna see?” I said, holding Riley on one hip and holding a present up addressed to Dad.

“Yes yes yes! Daddy! Open it! Hurry!” they squealed excitedly.

Nick chuckled and took the box from me. “Hmm. I wonder what it could be?” he smiled.

“Let’s sit down and watch him open it,” I insisted.

They sat crisscross on the carpet, as I took a seat by Nick on the sofa. Nick began to unwrap the package, looking over at me suspiciously. I just urged him to open it faster. As he took off the wrapping paper, he let it fall in the air and land on the girls as they giggled. They loved wrapping paper for some odd reason.

“Ooooh! A box! I’ve always wanted a box,” Nick joked.

I rolled my eyes as the girls laughed, thinking he was serious. Nick then opened the box and pulled out a small note attached to the shirt.

“What does it say?” I ask him, smirking.

“It says, ‘I hope you like your new shirt just as much as I do. Love, Mommy’,” he read.

As he took off the taped note, he unfolded the shirt, then slowly read the fine print.

“’Daddy of Five’” he read, turning over the shirt. “Aww I love it honey!”

Seeing that he was clueless, I smiled devilishly, turning Riley around. He looked confused for a second, looking back at the shirt. He must’ve been doing the math. Then he glanced at Riley’s romper, doing a double take.

“Are you serious?” he asked, smiling in shock.

I nodded quietly and handed him the bag of tests that proved that I was positively pregnant. He took it immediately and looked down at them. I saw him almost tear up again, like he had when he first found out I was expecting the girls. He finally looked up after staring at it in awe for 30 seconds and kissed me excitedly. I heard the girls scream “EW!”

“Wait! What’s going on?” Nicole asked confused.

Nick pulled away and took Riley from my arms and turning him to face the other 3. “Riley’s going to be a big brother!”

They still looked confused.

“Mommy’s going to have another baby!” I said, making big motions with my arms.

All three of them squealed with excitement, including Riley, who was kicking his legs quickly not knowing why he was excited. Natalie came over and pointed to my belly.

“So there’s a baby in there?” she asked curiously.

“Yeah, but it’s super small, just like you started out,” I said gently, placing her on my lap.

“Wow,” Nicole said in awe as she put her ear up to my stomach. How precious.

“Yep. We’re going to be an even BIGGER family now,” Nick smiled, hugging David and Riley together.

“We sure are,” I took his hand in mine.

“Can we get a girl baby this time?” Natalie pleaded.

“Yeah, please?” Nicole cried out.

Nick and I laughed. “It’s not up to us, pumpkin, but you never know,” I said.

Later on in my first trimester, Nick and I went to the doctor’s to find out the gender of the baby, and turns out, we were having a girl after all. Welcome to the world, Alexis (Lexi) May Jonas.
