1. A New Start

I'm done packing and ready to leave. My whole life I've been waiting for this moment. I take out my passport and flip through all the crisp papers. Placing the passport into my purse I take one last look around my room. I sigh, Mother has been heartbroken since she heard the news of my leaving. She begged me to stay, but I had to convince her that it was the best thing for me at this time. I needed to find out who I am and who I wanted to be. It was for the best. I had to promise her that I would always call and send her updates. Colton, my brother was just as upset. He told me that I couldn't leave and that it wouldn't be fair, but I insisted. I guess I had always been this stubborn. Mother says I get that from Father. I reach into my dresser drawer and pull out a picture of him. I touch his face. Father died in Iraqu, though everyone insisted that it was a very honorable death. He was given a medal of honor at his funeral and it hangs in the hallway as a reminder of him. Now that Father is gone I understand why it must be hard for Mother to lose another member of her family, but I will be back at some point. I leave my room, closing the door tight behind me, and head for the front door. My purple suitecase is already there waiting for me, beckoning me toward the door. My mother has tears in her eyes and I remind her of my promises. She hugs me and tries not to let go. Colton stands at a distance and just nods to me. He may be 3 years older than me but he can act so immature at 20. My taxi has arrived and I'm on my way. The ride to the airport is a bumpy one, but once I've made it I can't help but feel like this is my fate.
