Out at sea

Anna is a young girl who suffers from the loss of her father out at sea. She tries to cope with everyday life: helping her single mother and younger brother Benji to make the most of life, though it all gets too much. With the stress and anxiety of moving schools, Anna is anything but fine. Her long trips up to the beach are tiring, but they're worth it when she gets to look out and imagine her Dad beside her. But everything seems to result in tears, and Anna realises she's stayed strong for too long.

13. Misunderstanding

The next day, I wake up to a flourish of fresh air, the atmosphere full of sweet-smelling flowers, and the birds chirping loudly. I glance over to my window which is wide open, gusts of wind making the flimsy curtains flutter in the breeze. Surprised, I jump out of bed, slipping on my dressing gown and peering out the window. Sure enough, there is my Mum in the front garden, watering what I thought never existed in our territory, ever. Flowers. Since when was she into gardening?

Running downstairs, I try to be careful not to trample on any of the potted plants which now seem to have appeared on almost every step. It's only when I reach the kitchen that I receive a full explanation of it.

"Oh, sorry Anna," Mum's voice is shrill with excitement, "I was just deciding where to put those plants in the garden and I didn't want to block the hallway so I put them on the stairs."

Don't they get in the way more on their stairs? I think to myself, but I don't say it as to not want to ruin my Mother's delightful mood. Instead, I grab the scone lying neatly on a plate on the table, labelled with a sticky note saying 'For Anna'. Wow, she really is improving. She's started this course, according to Dave, twice a week where she meets other alcoholics and they discuss distractions to help solve the problem. It must be really helping.

"Thanks Mum, I'm off now!" I shout as I leave the house, Benji running after me - only just ready in time.

"No problem! See you after school darling," My Mum calls after me and I smile, loving her more already.

When I reach my locker at school, I suddenly notice a figure standing beside me. I look up to see Colton, staring at me. I raise my eyebrows and he shrugs.

"So, who's your new boyfriend?" he asks casually and I stop in my tracks - I was getting my books out for Science.

"Erm, what are you talking about?" I ask, and he laughs, as if I'm pretending I don't know, when I actually have no clue at all.

"I saw you with him, you know. After school yesterday. You left school early with him and he called you beautiful." He states, and I almost choke on my saliva.

"Oh my God..."I say, nodding my head, "That was my Mum's boyfriend."

Colton widens his eyes. "Wow, he looked young, I'm sorry."

"Hah, you really seemed to mind, didn't you? Getting all worked up there," I tease him, and he nudges me into the locker and I laugh.

"Guess I just really like you then," he says casually, walking off to his form room. I can't stop smiling.
