4. Surprise Phone Call, Surprise Visit

Ring ring.

Sophie groaned.

Ring ring.

"You have got to be kidding me," she mumbled under her breath, reaching her hand out to the bedside table where her phone was sitting.

Ring ring.

"Oh shut it!" She yelled at the phone, knocking over a whiskey flask and cursing it as she finally picked up the maker of the horrid noise.

Ring ring.

"Alright, alright!" She shouted, pressing the answer call button without even bothering to check the caller ID. "Hello?" She answered solemnly, bitterness dripping in her voice.

"Sophie thank God you answered, I've been worried s--"

Sophie pulled the phone away from her ear and pressed the end call button. She loved Ashton, she really did, but she wasn't ready to talk yet. She rolled her body back over on her back, stretching her arms out and closing her eyes. Her whole body ached, and her head was throbbing. It felt as though she had a permanent hangover these days. She took a deep breath and tried to fall back asleep.

Ring ring.

"Ah, fuck you Ashton," Sophie muttered angrily, opening her eyes and bringing the phone back in front of her face.

Ring r--

"Ashton I don't wanna talk right now, I've already told you--"

"Soph? Soph it's me."

Sophie stopped breathing when she heard the familiar voice on the other end.

"Sophie please don't hang up. I know you don't want to talk to me and I respect that, I really do. So how about I just talk, and you listen?"

Sophie didn't reply. She couldn't say anything, she couldn't hardly breathe after all. That voice made her heart actually feel something, which she hadn't had the luxury of in the past two weeks.

"Okay it says you're still on the line so I'm guessing you're okay with that. Look Soph, there aren't enough words in the dictionary to express how sorry I am. I'm sorry that you're hurting, I'm sorry that you're angry, I'm sorry for causing all this mess. I love you so much, and it kills me to know that you're in so much pain and you won't let me try to help you. I-I tried to talk to Louis, but he uh, he won't speak to me. Big shocker there, eh?" The voice on the other end laughed nervously. "But I'm going to keep trying. I'm going to make this right for you Sophie, I have to. If I do one thing right in my life, it's going to be this. I love you Sophie, you know I do."

Sophie was sitting on the edge of her bed now, her back to the bedroom door. She was just in a pair of black underwear and a white tanktop, and her hair was thrown up in a lopsided bun. Tears glistened in her eyes as she looked at the white wall in front of her. The other line was quiet for a moment.

"C'mon Sophie, please just say something and let me know you're alright. Just...please say something." The familiar voice pleaded. Sophie bit her lip so hard she almost made it bleed. He sounded as though it was in just as much pain as she was. She hated hearing him like that, it made her heart ache even more. She was hurting everyone around her, she was like a disease.

Sophie opened her mouth to speak but the only sound she produced was a small squeak.

"Sophie?" He asked again.

"I..." She managed to begin speaking, "I l-love you too Liam." She stuttered out.

Sophie heard an exhale of relief on the other end of the line. Liam laughed nervously again. "God Sophie, you don't know how much I've wanted to hear your voice," he rambled, "How much I've wanted to hear you say those words. We've all been worried sick about you, I'm here with Ashton and Niall and we--"

"Well isn't that just sweet."

Sophie's entire body froze and the phone dropped from her hand. It fell to the floor with a thud and she heard Liam's voice distantly saying, "Sophie? Sophie are you there?"

Sophie slowly turned her head to look over her shoulder and saw the familiar face standing in the doorway. He was leaned up against the doorframe, his arms and ankles crossed and an stone cold expression on his face. The tears in Sophie's eyes threatened to spill over and her mouth was open but the only noise coming from it was a strange choking sound. The two stared at each other for a few more seconds and Belle was finally able to form his name.
