10. The Weekend

~Amber's POV~

I wake up Saturday morning and get ready to train with Liam. I go downstairs and eat a granola bar with a glass of orange juice. I put my shoes on and walk outside. I see Liam walking up the sidewalk. "Hey Liam." "Hey Amber. Sleep well?" "I did. How was your night?" "It was good. I hung out with my friends." "Fun. So where do you want to run to?" I ask. "Well, we can go around the outer part of your neighborhood and then come back and work on some of your soccer skills. If that's ok with you?" "That sounds fine."

We start off stretching and then begin the run around my neighborhood which is kinda big. We start off in silence but it's comfortable. Before too long though, we get to talking. We somehow end up talking about our childhoods. I don't mind really. I had a good childhood.

We get done running and I invite him inside so we can get a drink before working on my skills. I grab two bottles of water from the fridge and toss Liam one. "Want anything to snack on?" I ask. "Nah. I'm good." "Ok. I'll just go upstairs and get the ball so we can start." He nods at me and I go to my room and grab the ball. When I come back down, Liam and I go out the back door to the back yard. "What skill do you want to start with?" He asks. "Stealing. You take the ball and I'll try and steal it from you." "Alright." Liam says and takes the ball out of my hands. After that, we move on to other skills. I notice that Liam is pretty good at soccer. 'Wonder why he isn't trying out.' "Hey Liam." "Yes?" "Why aren't you trying out? I mean you're pretty good." "Well thanks. The reason I don't tryout is cause it's just a past time for me. I care more about music then soccer." "I've never heard you sing before." "You will. One of these days. I promise." We smile at each other and continue on with the training.

We finish up and Liam picks up the ball while walking towards me. "You are really athletic Amber. You're sure to make the team." "Thanks Liam but it's because of you. You have really helped me this past week." "It was nothing. Whenever you need help I'll be there." I smile at him and then hear my stomach growl. 'It must be lunch time.' "Would you like to stay for lunch?" "Sure." We go inside and I see my mother fixing lunch. "Hi Mom." "Hello Darling. Who's this?" She says turning around and giving me a hug. "This is my friend Liam. He's been helping me with soccer." "Nice to meet you Liam." She says and they shake hands. "Nice meeting you Mrs. Knight." "I invited him to stay for lunch. I hope that's alright." "Of course it is. I'll have it ready in about ten minutes." I nod and then lead Liam out into the living room. We sit on the couch and watch TV.

~Liam's POV~

I get up the following morning and throw on a pair of shorts and t-shirt. I go downstairs and eat a bowl of cereal and a glass of milk. My mom comes in a few minutes later and says, "You're up a little early today. What's the reason?" "I'm going over to Amber's this morning to run." "It's great that you two have been running together. Any reason?" "Soccer. She wants to get a little faster and better at her skills." "Well she's lucky to have you as a friend." "Thanks Mom. Well I better get going. I'll be home later." "Alright Hun." I put my dishes in the sink and then give her a kiss on the cheek. I hop on the bus and head to Amber's house.

As I'm walking up the sidewalk to her house, she walks outside ready to get started. "Hey Liam." "Hey Amber. Sleep well?" "I did. How was your night?" "It was good. I hung out with my friends." "Fun. So where do you want to run to?" She asks. "Well, we can go around the outer part of your neighborhood and then come back and work on some of your soccer skills. If that's ok with you?" "That sounds fine."

We stretch and then start running. Neither one of us talk at first but it's calming. After a few minutes, I ask her about her childhood and we talk about that for most of the time. It's great to hear what Amber did as a kid. Yes, we've lived in the same town and gone to the same school all these years but up until now she has never talked with me and the boys. The weird thing is though, Louis lives right behind her and they never once hung out as kids.

We get back to Amber's house and she invites me inside. She walks to the fridge and pulls out two waters and tosses one to me. "Want anything to snack on?" She asks. "Nah. I'm good." "Ok. I'll just go upstairs and get the ball so we can start." I nod and she goes upstairs to get the soccer ball. We then go out to the backyard. "What skill do you want to start with?" I ask. "Stealing. You take the ball and I'll try and steal it from you." "Alright." And I take the ball out of her hands. After that, we move on to other skills. 'Amber is really good. Louis is going to be put to a challenge against her.' "Hey Liam." "Yes?" "Why aren't you trying out? I mean you're pretty good." "Well thanks. The reason I don't tryout is cause it's just a past time for me. I care more about music then soccer." "I've never heard you sing before." "You will. One of these days. I promise." We smile at each other and continue on with the training.

We finish up and I pick up the ball walking over to Amber. "You are really athletic Amber. You're sure to make the team." "Thanks Liam but it's because of you. You have really helped me this past week." "It was nothing. Whenever you need help I'll be there." She smiles at me and then asks, "Would you like to stay for lunch?" "Sure." We go inside and I see Mrs. Knight fixing lunch. "Hi Mom." "Hello Darling. Who's this?" She says turning around and giving Amber a hug. "This is my friend Liam. He's been helping me with soccer." "Nice to meet you Liam." She says and shakes my  hand. "Nice meeting you Mrs. Knight." "I invited him to stay for lunch. I hope that's alright." "Of course it is. I'll have it ready in about ten minutes." Amber then leads me out into the living room. We sit on the couch and watch TV.

It is time for lunch and I take a seat across from Amber. "Where is your husband Mrs. Knight?" I ask her as she sets the food on the table. "His team had a game today." "Team? Amber told me he works at the college but didn't say anything more than that." "Oh. Sorry Liam. My dad is the soccer coach there." "Is that where you've learned to play soccer so well?" "It certainly is. When Amber was little, the two of them would watch soccer on TV and then one day Amber said she wanted to play." Mrs. Knight says. I laugh and Amber looks down. Mrs. Knight sits down and we begin eating. "Do you play any sports Liam?" "Not really. I like to play soccer but I just play in my free time. I love to sing though." We then get into a conversation on different artists and songs.

Once lunch is over, Mrs. Knight starts cleaning up the table. I get up and help her out. I notice Amber do the same. "Thank you Liam but you didn't have to." "I know that. It's just the way I was brought up though." She smiles at me and I smile back. "Are you doing anything this afternoon Amber?" "Yeah. I'm going over to my English partner's house so we can finish our project." 'Will you be home for supper?" "I don't know but I'll let you know." "Alright then." Amber and I walk out into the hallway. "So can you help train tomorrow?" Amber asks. I nod yes. "Cool. Um, wanna meet at two?" "That's fine." I say. Mrs. Knight then walks out into the hallway. "Sorry to interrupt but I over heard what you two were talking about." She gives us both a smile and continues. "If you would like Liam then you can come to church with us and stay for lunch before you two workout." I look at Amber to see if she would care. She shrugs her shoulders and then I say, "That would be nice. What time should I be here?" "Nine." Mrs. Knight says. I tell her thank you and then she walks back into the kitchen.

"Sorry about that Liam." "No. It's fine." "Alright. Well I hate to rush you but I've really got to get going." "How about I walk with you for a bit. If that's alright with you." "Ok. Just give me a couple of minutes." I nod and Amber heads upstairs. She comes back down in different clothes and with her book bag. "Bye Mom." She says and we leave. "So who's your partner Amber?" "Um somebody you know." "C'mon tell me. Please?" "Ok. It's Zayn." "Zayn. As in my friend Zayn Malik?" I say a little surprised. "Yeah. We are actually friends. He's a cool guy." "I'll have to agree with you on that. Are you friends with any of the others?" "No. Just you two." I nod and we arrive at Zayn's house. "Well here you are Amber." "Thanks Liam. I'll see you tomorrow at nine." "Right. See you then." I say and head off to my house.

'Friends huh. This must mean Zayn only likes her as a friend too. That leaves Niall, Harry, and Louis left in 'The Game'. If only I could talk to Zayn. Maybe he saw me walk with Amber and will ask her about it. Then him and I can talk.' I get home and decide to work on homework.

~Amber's POV~

I knock on the door and Mrs. Malik answers. "Hello Amber." "Hi Mrs. Malik." I say stepping into the house. "He's in his room. You can go on up." "Thank you." I say and go up to Zayn's room. I knock on the door and then enter his room. I see him laying on his bed watching TV. "Hey Zayn." "Hey Amber. Did you get home ok last night?" "Yes. It was actually kinda fun sneaking out." He laughs and then we get started on the project.

"So now that we are done with the project, you wanna watch TV or something?" Zayn asks. "Let's play video games." "You play video games?" "Not a lot because I'm an only child but yes." "Alright then. I'll go a little easy on you." "Don't. I'm going to be the one to win." "We'll see about that." He says and we start playing.

I hear a knock on his door and one of his sister walks in. "Amber. Would you like to stay for supper?" "Yes please." I say. She leaves and then Zayn pauses the game and looks at me. "Really? Why?" "I love hanging out with you and your family Zayn. Besides I'm an only child and my parents are always busy." He nods and we go back to playing. "I can't believe you just beat me." He says once we finish. "I told you I would win." I say smiling. "I'll never doubt you again." We laugh and then head downstairs when his mom calls us. We sit down and begin eating. "Thank you for inviting me to stay for dinner Mrs. Malik." "Anytime Amber. We love having you here."

When supper is over, I go back to Zayn's room with him following me. "Do you have to go already Amber?" "Yeah. I'm sorry Zayn." "Would you like a ride home? It is getting a bit dark out." "Thanks for the offer but I think I'm gonna walk." "At least let me walk you to the end of the street. Please?" "Ok." I say and smile. I grab my stuff and we head downstairs. I tell his family goodbye and thanks and we walk outside. "Can I ask you a question Amber?" "Sure Zayn." "Are you and Liam friends? I saw you two walking to my house together and I just wasn't sure if you guys are friends or just bumped into each other and he was on his way home." "I'm not going to lie to you Zayn. We are friends and have been for a few days. He's helping me with soccer. He was at my house this morning and he found out that you were my partner for English and since your house is on the way to his, we walked together." "Who would've thought that you would be friends with two out of five of us?" "It's crazy I know. But I am glad to have you two as friends. And please don't tell the others." "I won't. I promise." We get to the end of the street and stop. "Thanks. Well I'll see you Monday then?" I ask. "Definitely." We hug and then go our separate ways.

The whole way home, I can't stop smiling. Something about hanging out with Liam, Zayn, and their families just make my day. When I get home, I set my backpack down and head straight into the living room where I hear the TV. Both of my parents are sitting on the couch watching a movie. I sit down in a chair and my father asks, "How was your day?" "It was good. Got my English project done and Liam and I worked on soccer." "I'm glad you found somebody to help you. You know I would if I could." "I understand Dad. You have a lot going on with the team." "I'm glad you understand Sweetie." We sit there watching the rest of the movie. When it is over, I go to bed. 'Tomorrow should be just as good of a day as today.'

~Zayn's POV~

As it gets closer to one, I walk over to the window and look for Amber. A few minutes later I spot her walking towards the house. She's not alone though. She's walking with Liam and they seem to be getting along. 'Did they bump into each other and get to talking or are they actually friends. I'll have to ask her that.' I see Liam leave and Amber walks up to the door. I lay back down on my bed and watch TV to make sure Amber doesn't know I was sorta spying. I hear a knock on the door and then she walks in. "Hey Zayn." "Hey Amber. Did you get home ok last night?" "Yes. It was actually kinda fun sneaking out." I laugh and then we work on our project.

We get done with the project but I don't want Amber to leave. "So now that we are done with the project, you wanna watch TV or something?" I ask. "Let's play video games." "You play video games?" "Not a lot because I'm an only child but yes." "Alright then. I'll go a little easy on you." "Don't. I'm going to be the one to win." "We'll see about that." I set up the game and we begin playing Call of Duty. After a few rounds, there's a knock on my door and my little sister comes in. "Amber. Would you like to stay for supper?" "Yes please." She leaves and then I pause the game and look at Amber a little shocked. "Really? Why?" "I love hanging out with you and your family Zayn. Besides I'm an only child and my parents are always busy." I turn back to the game and we continue playing.

We end the game and I look at Amber and say, "I can't believe you just beat me." "I told you I would win." She says smiling. "I'll never doubt you again." We laugh and then head downstairs when my mom calls us. We sit down and begin eating. "Thank you for inviting me to stay for dinner Mrs. Malik." "Anytime Amber. We love having you here." 'Yes. Amber loves hanging here and my family loves her hanging here. This has been a good day.'

All through supper, we talk about all sorts of things. We get done and I follow Amber up to my room. "Do you have to go already Amber?" "Yeah. I'm sorry Zayn." "Would you like a ride home? It is getting a bit dark out." "Thanks for the offer but I think I'm gonna walk." "At least let me walk you to the end of the street. Please?" I ask in a kind voice. "Ok." She says and smiles. She grabs her bag and we go downstairs. Amber tells my family goodbye and we walk outside. "Thanks. Well I'll see you Monday then?"Amber aks. "Definitely." We hug and then go our separate ways.

When I walk back into my house, my mom calls me into the living room. "Yes?" "Amber is a nice girl. I'm glad you have her as a friend." "Thanks Mom." I start to head upstairs but stop when my mom says, "Zayn." "Yes Mom." "You should  bring Amber over more often. Please tell her that she is welcome over here anytime." I nod to my mother and head off to my room. 'Liam and Amber are friends. That's not too bad. At least we'll be able to talk and hang with Amber without the other three.' I get into bed and fall asleep with a smile on my face.

~Amber's POV~

Sunday morning, I get up and get dressed for church. I put on a jean skirt and plaid shirt. I pull my hair half back and put a little make up on. I go downstairs and both of my parents are sitting at the table eating. I take my seat and begin eating too. Once I get done, I go upstairs and grab my shoes. When I get back, I hear a knock at the door. "I got it." I tell my parents. I open the door to see Liam in dress clothes and a tie. "Morning Liam." "Good morning Amber." He comes in and we stand in the entry way waiting for my parents.

"You look nice." "Thank you Liam. You sure know how to clean up." "I suppose that's supposed to be a compliment?" I nod yes and then my parents walk over. "Time to go." My dad says and we get into the car. On the way to church, we just make small talk.

~Liam's POV~

On Sunday, I wake up and get ready for church with the Knights'. I put on a pair of khaki pants and a blue short sleeve button down shirt with a black tie. Right before I leave, I grab my change of clothes for later. "Have a good time Honey." My mom tells me. "I will. Love you." I say and leave for Amber's.

I get off at the bus stop and walk the short distance to the house. I get there right at nine and knock on the door. The door opens and I see Amber in a jean skirt and plaid shirt. 'She has a bit of my style.' I smile as she tells me good morning and I respond saying the same. I step in and set my bag down. We stand there talking.

"You look nice." "Thank you Liam. You sure know how to clean up." "I suppose that's supposed to be a compliment?" I ask smirking. She nods and then her parents walk over to us. "Time to go." Mr. Knight says and we all get in the car and head to church while making small talk.

When church finishes and we get back to the Knights' home, Amber's mom starts on lunch. "I'll show you where the bathroom is so you can change." Amber says. I nod and pick up my bag before following her upstairs. "Here you go." She says at the second door on the left and then continues to her room. I close the door behind me and change into shorts and a t-shirt. I walk back downstairs and into the living room to see Mr. Knight sitting on the couch and watching TV. I sit down and noticed it is soccer.

A few minutes later, I hear Amber on the stairs saying, "Is the game on?" "Yes Sweetie." Her father replies. Amber comes in and sits down in between me and her dad. We sit there watching the game until we are called to lunch. We are pretty quiet at first but then Mr. Knight strikes up a conversation with me.

After we get done eating, Amber and I go outside and start running. "Have you enjoyed yourself so far Liam?" "I have. Thanks for letting me go with you guys." "It was no problem. You are welcome to come with us anytime." "Thanks. So how did things go with Zayn yesterday?" "That went well. We got our project done and I had supper with them. Both of your families are really great." "Thanks." I say and then we talk about other things. We finish running and then start warming up with the soccer ball. Once Amber is warmed up, we start on some drills. Before too long, Mr. Knight comes outside and helps Amber.

We get done at four and go inside for a snack. Mrs. Knight comes into the room and asks, "Liam. We go to church in the evenings as well. There is youth group tonight. Would you like to come along?" "Yes please." She nods her head and leaves. "You really want to come to youth group?" "Yeah. I had a good time this morning." "Alright then. Oh and don't worry about changing. We'll probably be outside for game time tonight." I nod my head and then we watch TV for a bit.

Amber was right about the game. We went outside and played dodgeball. I got out a couple of times but Amber never once got hit. She's just as good as she is at soccer. Afterwords, they drive me home. "Thanks again for letting me join you all today." I say. "We're glad you came Liam. You are welcome to come with us anytime." "Thank you." I say. "Bye Liam. See you at school." "Bye. See ya." I say and get out of the car and into the house. I let my mom know I'm home and tell her about my day. I then go upstairs and finish my homework before going to bed.

~Amber's POV~

When we get back to the house, Mom fixes lunch. I look over at Liam and notice his bag next to him. "I'll show you where the bathroom is so you can change." He nods and picks up his bag. We walk upstairs and when we get to the bathroom, I stop and say, "Here you go." Next, I continue on to my room to get changed. I throw on a pair of shorts and a shirt and leave my hair pulled back halfway. I walk down the stairs and ask my dad if the soccer game is on. When he says yes, I take a seat in between him and Liam so I can watch some of the game before lunch.

Mom calls for lunch and we sit at the table and started eating. No one talks until my dad starts asking Liam questions. Afterwords, Liam and I begin running. "Have you enjoyed yourself so far Liam?" "I have. Thanks for letting me go with you guys." "It was no problem. You are welcome to come with us anytime." "Thanks. So how did things go with Zayn yesterday?" "That went well. We got our project done and I had supper with them. Both of your families are really great." "Thanks." He says and we change the topic. After running, we warm up and start with some drills. Before too long, my father comes out and joins in.

We finish training at four and go inside for a snack. My mom comes in and invites Liam to go to church once again and he says yes.  "You really want to come to youth group?" "Yeah. I had a good time this morning." "Alright then. Oh and don't worry about changing. We'll probably be outside for game time tonight." We then watch TV until it's time to go.

After church is over, we drive Liam home. "Thanks again for letting me join you all today." Liam says. "We're glad you came Liam. You are welcome to come with us anytime." "Thank you." He says. "Bye Liam. See you at school." "Bye. See ya." He says before getting out of the car and going into his house. At home, we have supper. I watch some TV and then head to bed.
