The Game

Ever since the beginning of middle school, five guys have a game that they play. They hook up with girls and sleep with them. They'll break girls' hearts but sometimes they are lucky enough to get a girlfriend. This year, it's Amber's turn to participate in 'The Game'. Will she go along with it or reject the boys? And will she fall in love or get her hear broken?

7. Dinner with the Paynes'

~Liam's POV~

The seven minute walk to my house is perfect. I get to know Amber a bit better and we even joke around. Once we step into the house and set our stuff down, I notice Amber look around. "I like the colors." "Thanks but you should tell my mom." I laugh and she does too. I walk into the kitchen and Amber follows. My mom is fixing supper. "Mom." I say and she turns around. "Hello Sweetie." She says and gives me a hug. "Mom. This is Amber. Amber, my mom." "Nice to meet you Mrs. Payne." Amber says while shaking my mom's hand. "I invited her over for supper. I hope that's not a problem." "Of course not. It'll be ready in a few. Just make yourself comfortable Amber." They smile and I lead Amber into the living room.

My sisters are watching TV. I introduce them to Amber. They get to talking and they sort of click. "Dinner's ready." My mom says. We all get up and head to the dining room to eat. As my family sits down, I grab the computer chair for Amber and place it next to my seat. "Thank you." She says and I give a small nod. As we start to eat, I introduce Amber to my dad. "What grade are you in Amber?" He asks. "Ninth just like Liam." Hearing her say my name is like music to my ears. "Play any sports?" Ruth asks. "Yeah. I'm really into soccer. Been playing since I was like six or something." "Wow. I don't see many girls who play soccer." Nicola says. "Yeah. Most girls at school aren't that big into soccer. They can't stand the physicalness involved." We all laugh. As dinner continues on, I learn more about Amber. My family seems to like her as well.

'Smooth move inviting her for dinner. They really like her.' Dinner comes to a conclusion and I look over at Amber. "Have you finished the Algebra Two assignment?" "No." "Want to work on it together? I know it's kinda getting late but I thought I would still ask." "Um. Sure." She says and smiles. I smile back at her. 'Wow. She's surprising me a lot today.' We grab our book bags and sit down in the living room and work on the assignment.

When we finish, she packs up her bag and heads to the front door. I stand up and follow her. "Thanks for dinner Liam. I had a good time." "You're not walking home are you?" She nods her head. "Amber. I can't let you do that. It's dark out. Plus I don't know where you live." "I'll be fine Liam." At this point, my mom walks in. "Are you leaving Amber?" She asks and Amber nods. "Actually Mom. Amber needs a ride home." I say and ignore the look Amber gives me. "I would be willing to drive you. Just let me get my keys and shoes." Mom walks away and I turn towards Amber. "Sorry. But I can't let you walk in the dark." "I figured I wouldn't be able to get away with it." She says and laughs. Then my mom comes back. "Ready to go Amber?" She nods and then looks at me. "Thanks Liam. See you in class tomorrow." "Bye Amber." I say and close the door behind them.

I lean against the door and sigh before going up to my room. I get ready for bed and when I lay down, I replay all the events of tonight. Just thinking of the memories brings a smile to my face. "Today was the best. Amber is really cool." I say out loud before falling into a peaceful sleep.

~Amber's POV~

On the way to Liam's house, we talk and joke around. When I walk into his house and set my stuff down, I take a look around. 'Wow. It's really colorful.' "I like the colors." "Thanks but you should tell my mom." We both laugh and then I follow him into the kitchen. There's an older woman and I presume it to be Mrs. Payne. "Mom." Liam says and she turns around. "Hello Sweetie." She says and gives her son a hug. "Mom. This is Amber. Amber, my mom." He introduces. I shake her hand and say, "Nice to meet you Mrs. Payne." He explains that he invited for dinner and she tells me to make myself comfortable. I smile at her and then follow Liam into the living room.

I notice two girls sitting on the couch watching TV. Liam introduces me to them. I sit down and we begin talking. We instantly click. 'All of them are really nice. Now I know where Liam gets it from.' Mrs. Payne calls us for dinner. Liam grabs another chair and places it next to him. I sit down in the chair and say to him, "Thank you." As we begin eating, Liam introduces me to his dad. "What grade are you in Amber?" He asks. "Ninth just like Liam." "Play any sports?" Ruth asks. "Yeah. I'm really into soccer. Been playing since I was like six or something." "Wow. I don't see many girls who play soccer." Nicola says. "Yeah. Most girls at school aren't that big into soccer. They can't stand the physicalness involved." We all laugh. 'I'm really enjoying this. His family is so nice and they seem to like me. I'm glad I said yes to his invite.'

Once everyone is done eating, Liam looks over at me. "Have you finished the Algebra Two assignment?" He asks and I say no. "Want to work on it together? I know it's kinda getting late but I thought I would still ask." "Um. Sure." We smile at each other and then grab our bags going into the living room to work on homework. 'This isn't bad. It's actually nice Maybe we can be friends..'

We finish the assignment so I gather up my things and move to the front door. Liam of course follows. "Thanks for dinner Liam. I had a good time." "You're not walking home are you?" I nod my head. "Amber. I can't let you do that. It's dark out. Plus I don't know where you live." "I'll be fine Liam." At this point, his mom walks in. "Are you leaving Amber?" She asks and I nod. "Actually Mom. Amber needs a ride home." Liam says and ignores the look I'm giving him. I don't want to inconvenience them. "I would be willing to drive you. Just let me get my keys and shoes." Once Mrs. Payne leaves, Liam turns to me. "Sorry. But I can't let you walk in the dark." "I figured I wouldn't be able to get away with it." I laugh. Then his mom comes back. "Ready to go Amber?" I nod and look at Liam. "Thanks Liam. See you in class tomorrow." "Bye Amber."

I get in the passenger side of the car and tell Mrs. Payne my address. "Did you have a good time Amber?" "Oh yes. Dinner was delicious. Thanks for letting me stay." "No problem Darling. You are welcome anytime." I look down and smile. "You know, I'm glad Liam has a friend like you." She says. "Why is that?" "He's always hanging out with the lads. It's good for teens to have friends of the opposite sex." "Well, Liam is a cool guy. You've raised him well Mrs. Payne." I say. "Thank you Amber." It's silent for a minute and then Mrs. Payne says, "You must be special." "What?" "Liam wouldn't bring just any one over for supper. There must be something about you that gave him to the courage to ask you over." "Should you be telling me this?" I ask as she pulls up to my house. She laughs. "Thank you. For dinner and driving me." "Don't mention it. And don't forget you are welcome anytime. The girls really seemed to like you as well." "Thanks." I say again and get out of the car and walk into my house.

I close the door and sigh. I go up to my room and get ready for bed. 'I had a good time tonight. I'm glad I took Liam up on his offer. His family is really nice as well.' I get on my laptop and log on to Twitter. I tweet: Today was a great day :) Can't wait for tomorrow. I then decide to check out Liam's profile and follow him. I log off and get into bed. I can't seem to get Mrs. Payne's words out of my head. 'You must be special.' I fall asleep with a smile on my face and relive the events of the day in my dreams.

~Mrs. Payne's POV~

I hear the door open and a couple of voices. It's probably Liam. I hear someone come into the kitchen and then my son say, "Mom." I turn around and say hello to him as I give him a hug. "Mom. This is Amber. Amber, my mom." Amber shakes my hand and says, "Nice to meet you Mrs. Payne." She already seems like a nice girl. Liam tells me that he invited her over and I tell two it will be ready shortly and just to make herself uncomfortable and he leads her into the living room.

I call everyone for dinner and Liam grabs the computer chair putting it next to him for Amber. Once we start eating, Liam introduces his father and then we just talk and learn about Amber. As I clean the table, I notice that they go into the living room to work on homework. The next time I see them is in front of the door. I walk up to them and ask, "Amber are you leaving?" She nods yes and then Liam says, "Actually Mom, Amber needs a ride home." I tell her I'll be right back so I grab my shoes and car keys. When I get back, I ask Amber if she is ready and she nods. She turns to Liam and says, "Thanks Liam. See you in class tomorrow." "Bye Amber."

We get in my car and Amber gives me her address. "Did you have a good time Amber?" "Oh yes. Dinner was delicious. Thanks for letting me stay." "No problem Darling. You are welcome anytime." I say. "You know, I'm glad Liam has a friend like you." "Why is that?" "He's always hanging out with the lads. It's good for teens to have friends of the opposite sex." "Well, Liam is a cool guy. You've raised him well Mrs. Payne." She says. "Thank you Amber." It's silent for a minute and then I say, "You must be special." "What?" "Liam wouldn't bring just any one over for supper. There must be something about you that gave him to the courage to ask you over." "Should you be telling me this?" Amber asks as I pull up to her house. I laugh. "Thank you. For dinner and driving me." "Don't mention it. And don't forget you are welcome anytime. The girls really seemed to like you as well." "Thanks." She says and gets out of the car heading inside. 'She's really nice. Liam is lucky to know her.' I head back home and go to bed.
