The Game

Ever since the beginning of middle school, five guys have a game that they play. They hook up with girls and sleep with them. They'll break girls' hearts but sometimes they are lucky enough to get a girlfriend. This year, it's Amber's turn to participate in 'The Game'. Will she go along with it or reject the boys? And will she fall in love or get her hear broken?

5. An Unexpected Day

~Amber's POV~

The following morning, I get up and get ready for school. I put a change of clothes and shoes into my duffle bag for later. I eat breakfast and then get on the bus. I take a seat next to Briley. "How did the rest of yesterday go?" She asks and I tell her about sitting behind Niall in Spanish and what went on during Drama. We get to school right as I finish.

"I can't believe them! Do you think they planned that?" "They could have. It took me a few minutes before I got on stage. It would've given them time to talk." "You should stay away from them." "Briley, I can't. Remember? At least one of them is in all of my classes and their lockers surround mine." "Right. Just try and have one of us with you then?" I nod my head. We meet up with Bree and Mikayla at their lockers and then walk to mine.

"Anything new with the boys that we should know?" Bree asks. "Let me give you the short version. Yesterday in Drama, I had to do a scene with all of them but Zayn." "It didn't turn out well." Mikayla states. Both Briley and I nod our heads. I see the boys head our way and whisper, "Let's get out of here." They look over their shoulders and then we walk off down the hall.

"You gonna try out for soccer Bree?" I ask. "Nah. I'm gonna stick with basketball." She says. We then talk about soccer and I tell them how much I'm hoping to get captain. Then the bell rings and we head off to class. When I walk in the room, the guys aren't there yet. I take my seat and get out my stuff.

They walk in and when they see me, they smile and take their seats. Niall turns around and says, "How are you this morning?" I give him the thumbs up and he turns back around. Then class begins.

I walk behind the boys on the way to our lockers and listen to them talking about some video game. I switch out my books and head off to class leaving Liam to walk by himself. When Liam walks in, I discretely wave him over to me. "Yes?" He says with a grin. "Meet at the college at three thirty." I tell him. He nods and takes his seat.

After class, we walk to our lockers together. "I'm sorry about yesterday." "What do you mean?" I ask. "The guys during Drama and running into you." "Oh. Don't sweat it. It was an accident. I'm over it now." "Wow." Liam says. "What?" "Just the fact about how calm you are with what happened. I thought you would be furious. Especially with class." "No. I'm pretty easy going and don't let things get to me." He smiles and I smile back. We stop talking as we approach the lockers and others.

~Liam's POV~

After I have breakfast, I gather my things for school and make sure I have my clothes to run with Amber. I meet up with the guys and we walk to school. The whole time, I'm still thinking about Amber and our run after school. I see Amber at her locker with her friends as we head that way. They look over their shoulders and then walk off.

"What do you suppose that was about?" Niall asks. "She was probably too shy to introduce us to her friends." Harry says. I put away my homework and get out my books for History. A couple of girls come up to us and we talk with them. I notice Harry flirting with them a little which isn't totally against the rules. The bell then rings and we head off to class.

When we walk through the door to the room, I see Amber already in her seat. I smile at her and sit down just like the others. I hear Niall ask her something but I'm still thinking about her. Whenever I'm around her, I can't help but smile. I'm glad she took me up on my offer. I'll get to spend more time with her. 'Don't forget to apologize for the guys.' I tell myself.

The boys and I walk to our lockers talking about Fifa but I can't help but notice Amber walking behind us. I expect her not to wait on me to walk to Algebra 2 and that's exactly what happens. I walk in and she waves me over. "Yes?" I say with a grin. "Meet me at the college at three thirty." She says. I nod my head and take my seat as class begins.

Amber walks out of the room behind me and walks with me to our lockers. "I'm sorry about yesterday." "What do you mean?" She asks. "The guys during Drama and running into you." "Oh. Don't sweat it. It was an accident. I'm over it now." "Wow." I say. 'She just let that go.' "What?" "Just the fact about how calm you are with what happened. I thought you would be furious. Especially with class." "No. I'm pretty easy going and don't let things get to me." I smile and Amber smiles back. We stop talking as we approach the lads. Amber gets her stuff and then walks off. I watch her walk off before heading to my own class.

~Amber's POV~

I take my seat next to Louis and get out my story. "Good luck on your story. Can't wait to hear it." I tell him. "Thanks. You too." He says and smiles. The teacher calls out the first name and we begin reading our stories. By now, there are only a few people who still have yet to go. Louis and I are both one of those people. "Amber. You're up." The teacher says. I grab my poem and walk to the front of the class. I look around the room and my eyes land on Louis. He smiles at me and then I take a deep breath.

"This is called 'Sanctuary'. The sky so dark, the moon shines bright. Stars twinkling, nothing to hide. The gentle breeze making the place calm. The soft chirps and ever so quiet waters. Everything as it should be, forever and ever." "Thank you Amber." I walk back to my seat and sit down. Louis leans over and whispers, "That was really good Amber. I could picture everything you described." "Thanks." I said blushing and then look down.

After a couple more people, it's Louis's turn. "Good luck." I whisper and smile before he gets to the front. When he is in place, he looks straight at me and smiles. "This is called 'Nature Brings Love'. The title is self-explanatory. In the woods behind our houses, I stop at my favorite spot." As he reads, I picture everything in my mind. "Sitting under the trees near the water, watching it ripple gently. The cool brisk wind rustles my hair as I think of you. The soft chirp of crickets and a snap of a twig, you come out into the clear taking a seat on the rock. Happy am I spending the afternoon talking with you. As the sky gets darker, the stars shine brightly. The cool wind blows and I wrap you in my jacket. Realizing what has happened, our love will be forever strong."

He takes a seat and right as I'm about to say something, the teacher starts talking. "Good job everyone. No homework tonight." The bell rings and everyone leaves the room. I grab Louis's arm before he gets away. "Mind if I walk with you?" He nods his head no and we make our way to our lockers. "That was absolutely AMAZING! I pictured it all in my head. I had no idea you were so good at writing Louis." "Thanks Amber. Yours was good too." I chuckle a bit. "That was just something I wrote off the top of my head. It seems like you put your feelings behind that poem." I say. "Well..." "Hi Amber." Liam and Harry say. I wave at them and open my locker. Right before I head to my next class, I lean over to Louis and whisper, "Can we finish this later?" "Sure. I'll slip my number in your locker later." He says and then walks off. I smile after him and follow Harry into science class.

~Louis's POV~

Right after second period, I go to Creative Writing. Today is the day we are reading our poems. I can't wait to hear Amber's but I can't wait to see her reaction when I read mine. She was the inspiration for it. She takes her seat and then says, "Good luck on your story. Can't wait to hear it." "Thanks. You too." I say and smile at her. The teacher calls on the first person to read their's. I listen to a few but can't stop thinking about Amber and how much she means to me. At first, she was just the 'Target Girl' but now...I just want to make her my girlfriend. It has only taken a few days but I've developed feelings for her.

I hear the teacher call Amber's name and I snap out of my thoughts. She walks to the front and looks around before her eyes land on me. I smile and she takes a deep breath before starting. "This is called 'Sanctuary'. The sky so dark, the moon shines bright. Stars twinkling, nothing to hide. The gentle breeze making the place calm. The soft chirps and ever so quiet waters. Everything as it should be, forever and ever." "Thank you Amber." The teacher says. She sits back down. I lean over and whisper, "That was really good Amber. I could picture everything you described." "Thanks." She says blushing and then looks down. I sneak glances at her as I wait for it to be my turn.

It's finally my turn. Amber whispers good luck to me and smiles as I take my place. I look straight at Amber and smile. "This is called 'Nature Brings Love'. The title is self-explanatory. In the woods behind our houses, I stop at my favorite spot. Sitting under the trees near the water, watching it ripple gently.

I take my seat and the teacher tells us we don't have any homework. The bell rings and I gather my stuff. Someone grabs my arm. I look over and see that it's Amber. "Mind if I walk with you?" I nod my head no and we head to our lockers. 'Wow. She actually wants to walk with me.' "That was absolutely AMAZING! I pictured it all in my head. I had no idea you were so good at writing Louis." "Thanks Amber. Yours was good too." She chuckles a bit. "That was just something I wrote off the top of my head. It seems like you put your feelings behind that poem." She says. "Well..." I start to say. "Hi Amber." Liam and Harry say. 'Great. Now I lost the chance to tell her how I feel.' Once I close my locker, Amber leans over and whispers, "Can we finish this later?" "Sure. I'll slip my number in your locker later." I say and walk off to my next class.

~Amber's POV~

We have a sub and our teacher didn't leave any work so we all just sit around talking. I sit with Keaton and Harry is sitting not to far away. We talk about soccer and basketball. Halfway through class, a thought pops into my head. 'Maybe Louis has put his number in my locker.' I ask to go to the bathroom but make my way to my locker.

As I get closer, I spot Louis coming from the other direction. We get to our locker and I say, "What are you doing?" "I came to put my number in your locker but I guess now I can just give it to you." He says and hands me a slip of paper which I put in my pocket. "Thanks. Wanna finish our conversation now?" "Sure. I was about to say that I did put some feeling behind the poem." "What parts?" "Um...spending the afternoon talking, handing over the jacket, and love being forever strong." He says. "Whoever it's about is really lucky Louis. I better get to class. Later." I say and walk back to the room I came from. "Wait." He says and I turn around. "Sorry but I've been gone to long." Then I walk away before he can say anything else.

When I get back in the room, Keaton asks me what took so long. I lie and say that I had to use the bathroom on the other side of school. I notice Harry giving me a questioning look but I just ignore him. When the bell rings, Keaton and I head to lunch.

~Harry's POV~

After third period, Liam and I walk to our lockers. I notice Amber and Louis talking."Hi Amber." The both of us say but she doesn't respond. 'Playing hard to get. I like it.' I think to myself. I grab my books for science and walk off to class. There is a sub and no work for us so we all just sit around talking. I sit not too far away from Amber and talk with a couple of guys in the class. I notice she gets up and leaves. She's gone longer than I would've expected and when she gets back, she sits back down and talks with her friend. 'What could've taken her so long?' I see Amber look my way and I give her a questioning look but she ignores me. When the bell rings, I head off to lunch.

~Louis's POV~

I help out in the office fourth period so I write down my number on a piece of paper and when I have to deliver a pass, I decide to drop the paper in Amber's locker. However, I see her coming towards me from the opposite direction. We stop at our lockers and see says, "What are you doing?" "I came to put my number in your locker but I guess now I can give it to you." I say and hand her my number which she puts in her pocket.

"Thanks. Wanna finish our conversation now?" "Sure. I was about to say that I did put some feeling behind the poem." "What parts?" "Um...spending the afternoon talking, handing over the jacket, and love being forever strong." I say nervously. "Whoever it's about is really lucky Louis. I better get to class. Later." She says and walks back to the room she came from. "Wait." I say and Amber turns around. "Sorry but I've been gone to long." She walks away as I mumble, "It's you." I walk back to the office and think of how stupid I am and the fact that I ruined my second chance to tell Amber my feeling for her. When the bell rings, I walk off to lunch.

~Amber's POV~

At lunch, we don't really talk about the boys'. We talk about other things instead. After lunch, I head to Spanish. It doesn't go to bad. Niall and I actually had a decent conversation. Well kinda. It was in Spanish and I didn't quite understand everything he said. Drama wasn't too bad either. We did some more improv but I was never chosen. The time comes for English and I get a little excited again. We had to do the letters and I can't wait to share mine.

Zayn walks in the room and takes his seat next to me. "Ready to ready these letters?" I ask. "No." "Why not?" "I don't really like standing up in front of others." He says. "Oh. Well just pretend you are talking to your friends or just to me." "I'll try." He looks down and the teacher stands up to start class. "Would anyone like to go first?" I raise my hand and am called on. I pick all three letters up and stand in front of the class.

"April sixteenth eighteen-thirty. Dear Mattie. We have been traveling for about two weeks now. We put our belongings into a prairie schooner. There is no room for any of us to ride in the wagon so we have to walk. Pa is driving and Ma is sitting next to him with baby Joel. As for me and Levi, we have to watch over Merry, Rachel, Aaron, Sarah, Noel, and Matthew. There isn't much we do except walk. We do stop at times to have a chance to have some real food instead of hard tack. We also have a chance to bathe, wash clothes, and get some sleep before continuing the journey. When we stop to take a break from traveling, Levi and I try to come up with games for the little ones. I have to fix supper while Levi sets up our little "house." Pa takes the animals to the river for a drink. Levi and I still talk at night like we always did before the move. Levi said that as being the oldest he has the most work to do. I told him that as being the second oldest and the oldest girl that I also have the most work. What's going on back home? How are you guys doing? Love Amber. And Levi, Merry, Rachel, Aaron, Sarah, Noel, Matthew, Joel, Ma, and Pa."

"April twenty-second eighteen-thirty. Dear Mattie. Hello again. It has now been a week since I last wrote. I'm doing fine. So are Pa, Ma, and Joel. A funny thing happened a few days ago. I went down to the river to get some water. When I stood back up, the pail of water flew out of my hand and got me wet. I took a step forward to reach for the pail, but my foot slipped. I slid down the mud and into the river." I stop and wait for the laughter to die down beginning to read again. "Levi just so happened to be walking by and he saw what happened. He dove into the water and helped me out. We started heading up the hill, but I lost my footing again and began tumbling down the hill. I tumbled in the mud and fell into the river again." I stop and wait once again. "This time Levi just stood on the bank and pulled me up. Once we got back to camp, Ma and Pa started laughing. Then my younger siblings joined in. I do have some bad news though. Just yesterday, we found out that Levi, Merry, Aaron, and Sarah all have the measles. They could possibly die and we are all praying that they don't. We have made just enough room for them to lay in the wagon. I would like to ask that you would pray for them as well. Love Amber. And Levi, Merry, Rachel, Aaron, Sarah, Noel, Matthew, Joel, Ma, and Pa."

"May first eighteen-thirty. Dear Mattie. This letter is stained with my tears. Not sad tears but joyful tears. Levi, Merry, Aaron, and Sarah are alive! They got over the measles two days ago. So far no one else in our family has gotten the measles. I'm sad to say this, but I thought I was going to get the measles and worse than the others. Pa had me take care of Sarah, Aaron, Merry, and Levi. I am glad to say that I didn't get the measles. I hope none of you have been sick. We all miss you and wish we could've stayed. But Pa thought it best for us to move and you know Pa. Once he makes up his mind, there's no chance in changing it. Love Amber. And Levi, Merry, Rachel, Aaron, Sarah, Noel, Matthew, Joel, Ma, and Pa."

I get done reading and sit down. "Thank you Amber. Who would like to go next?" I see Zayn raise his hand and I'm a little surprised. He gets up and looks straight at me. I smile giving him confidence and he begins reading his letters. They are about how his family has to move along with other people but he meets a girl and they become best friends. Once he sits back down, I tell him what I thought of the letters. "Thanks but your's were really good." He says. I thank him and then we listen to the other stories.

After class, I avoid talking to the boys'. I focus on getting my books together so I can get to the college quickly. I don't want anyone to see where I'm going and who will be with me. Once I have everything, I hop on the city bus to head to the college.

~Zayn's POV~

As it gets closer to last period, I become anxious. I want to hear Amber's letters but I also want to get mine over with. I walk in the room and take my seat next to Amber. "Ready to ready these letters?" She asks. "No." "Why not?" "I don't really like standing up in front of others." I say. It's true. I'm a bit shy. "Oh. Well just pretend you are talking to your friends or just to me." "I'll try." I say and look down. The teacher stands up and asks for volunteers. Amber decides to go first. Her second letter is funny and I laugh along with the rest of the class.

She sits down and I volunteer to go next. 'If Amber can do it, so can you.' I tell myself as I walk to the  front of the room. I look straight at Amber and she smiles at me. This really helps me. I picture just her in the room and begin reading. The friend in the letters I based off of Amber. She may not think of us as friends but I sure do. After school, she leaves quickly and neither the lads nor I know why.
