Coming Out of the Closet

I have a gay friend, who was very brave, and came out of the closet. This poem is to honor his bravery. Dan, I hope one day you can stand up to your alpha-male Dad.

1. Coming Out of the Closet

The fear,

Inside of me.

I'm scaed of myself.

And my sexuality.

Are they laughing at me?

Do they know?

I'm scared of my social life,

Shooting high to low.

I don't even have the dignity,

Of simply being gay.

I'm bisexual,

And I'm scared of what them gay-bashers might say.

I'm hiding from my true self.

In self-denial.

I need to come out of the closet,

Take a deep breath, and smile.

I need to stop worrying about opinions.

I'm scared of what people might think.

I will put my head up.

My boat won't sink.

I will tell the world.

And I won't have a care.

I'm proud of what I am,

And I don't care if people stare.

I need to come out of the closet.

Tell the world that I'm bi.

Finally, the truth will be out.

Finally I won't have to lie.
