Forever Young

Aubree is only 16 years old but has already had a rough life. When her older brother Jared dies from his battle with cancer, her whole world seems ruined. She starts really questioning what she wants to do with her future because she doesn't think she'll ever be able to sing again until Liam comes into her life. Can Liam help her get the courage to sing again or will she take a completely different road with someone else?

20. Ain't No Other Man

I somehow find my way back to my place in line and take a seat. Harry told me he was auditioning too and also wished me luck as I did to him. Something about Harry was different. Sure he seemed flirty, complementing me and giving me a few winks, but he also seemed genuine at the same time. My mind was so caught up in Harry that I didn't even see Liam offer his hand to me.
"You coming?" I snap out of my daydreaming and get up, moving slightly forward in the line.
"What time is it?" He looked down at his phone.
"About nine. Auditions are starting by now."
"Good, the sooner I can get out of these heels the better." Liam laughs and turns back around, looking around the stadium.
"I never asked you what your gonna sing, did I?"
"I don't think so", he says with a grin.
"So what's it gonna be?"
"Cry Me A River."
"I love it, so different. You think they'll be mad that I'm from the U.S?"
"Nah they'll love you." We patiently wait in line and finally we're close to the sign in table. I see strangers all around practicing their songs and even singing for the crowd. Time is running out for my song choice. I run a hand through my hair, hoping a gust of wind will cool me off. No luck. I'm sure ill have a sunburn by the end of this audition and we're some of the first here. I shift a little but continue to sit on the ground with my face in my palms until I feel a tap on my shoulder. Liam.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine, just exhausted." He gently grabs my chin and lift it up.
"Keep your head held high, we'll be inside soon." Liam is right. Probably ten minutes later we and thirty other are directed inside to another waiting area. I guess we weren't some of the first after all. The waiting room was spacious and air conditioned, definitely beats standing outside. I grab a bottle of water from Liam and take a seat with our families. We can somewhat relax and catch up, but I suddenly became distracted. Out of the corner of my eye I could make out a figure, looking In my direction. I didn't want to be obvious but I took the chance. What I see is curly brown hair and emerald green eyes glancing at me from the other side of the room. He's smiling, giving a quick wave and wink. I wave back, blushing a little. Liam must have seen because he asked who I waved to.
"His name is Harry, he walked me to the restaurant earlier. He's nice." The look on Liam's face is easy to read. A mixture of happiness, unsure, and worried. Why would he look worried?
"What's with your facial expression?"
"Oh, it's nothing." He rests his elbows on his knees, cupping his face in his hands.
"You okay?"
"I'm fine. Don't worry about it." How could I not worry about it? When Liam gets upset, he can't hide it-like me. He looks hurt but what did I do? Surely he wasn't upset by Harry. Harry hasn't even met him. He doesn't know him-but neither do I.

*** "Liam Payne and Aubree McMasters, please follow me back stage." Liam and I, along with our familes followed the woman behind a curtain backstage. I finally chose my song. Ain't No Other Man-it gives me a chance to show all my potential as not only a singer but a performer in general. As I peer around backstage, I see Harry again, with who I guessed is his mother. He smiles at me then walks over.
"What are you singing?"
"I'll let you be surprised like everyone else, what about you?"
"Guess you'll just have to wait as well." He walks off and I can't help but notice Liam looking at me.
"What?", I ask a little defensive. He shrugs and starts talking to Ruth again.
"Harry Styles, you're on." I jump at his name for some reason, watching him walk past me, brushing over one of my arms with a smile. His mom is sporting a "Harry has the Xfactor" shirt and I can't help but giggle a little.
"Ehm, I'm Harry", I hear as I watch I the tv backstage.
"Isn't she lovely, isn't she wonderful. Isn't she previous, less than one minute old..", he sings acapella. I smile, not knowing how good he really is. He gets two yeses then walks off the stage to embrace his mom in a tight hug. He comes over and I hold my hand up for a high-five but I stead he brings me into a hug.
"Good luck lace, ill be sure to watch you before I go", he winks and turns the corner with his mom be his side. Lace? I knew I should have changed. Can't go back now.
"Liam Payne, you're up." I rush over to hug him and wish him luck, he hugs back but it's different this time. It feels more distant. A small frown grew on my face.
"..cry me..a riverrrr..", listen as he ends the song. He's so good. No doubt he'll make it. He walks offstage with a huge smile after getting all three yeses. He hugs his family first then me. I start to shake my hands by my side, trying to make my nerves go away. It doesn't work.
"Aubree McMasters, you're on in 3,2-" I walk out onto the stage, the lights shining brightly above me. I don't look at the crowd but I hear them cheer and whistle. The judges have a smile on their faces but that can change if they hate my song choice.
"Hello Aubree", Cherl greets.
"Hi", I say with a nervous smile.
"So tell us something about yourself", Louis says.
"We'll I uh..I'm vacationing here from the U.S." the crowd goes crazy. Probably from my accent.
"Wow!", Louis exclaims.
"Well what are you singing for us today?"
"Ain't No Other Man by Christina Aguilera."
"Well good luck", Simon says.
"I could feel it from the start, couldn't stand to be apart..something bout ya caught my eye, something moved me deep inside. Don't know whatcha did boy but ya had it, and I've been hooked ever since..told my mother, my brother, my sister and my friends..told the others, my lovers, all past and present tense..and everytime I see you everything starts making sense..ain't no other man, can stand up next to you..ain't no other man, on the planet does what you do.." As I sing I'm in my own world. Giving it everything I have. Surprisingly they let me finish the song and all three judges give me a standing ovation along with some of the crowd. I smile and wave to the crowd and then I feel all warm inside. Jared. He's with me and he's proud. Tears slowly stream down my face as everyone keeps clapping.
"Aubree, you're amazing! I'm thrilled you chose to audition here", Louis exclaims in excitement.
"You have something very special and different about your voice, I loved it", Cherl compliments. Now it's Simons turn.
"I see you're emotional, what made you so emotional?"
"Well I did this in honor of my brother, he's gone now but I feel him with me while singing."
"Well I know he's proud. You're bloody brilliant."
"Alright. We're gonna vote now", Louis announces.
"I absolutely adore you, yes", Cherl says.
"I'm going to say yes too", Louis adds.
"I can already see a little popstar in you. Big fat yes", Simon finishes. I'm so ecstatic that I jog off to my family in my heels and pull them into a big hug. Ruth runs up along with Karen an Geoff and they all give me a hug as well. As for Liam, he picked me up, spinning me around.
"We did it! We're going to boot camp!" He shouts. I see Harry walk up after Liam puts me down.
"Well done lace, guess ill see you at boot camp." He winks at me before looking over at Liam and smirking. Liam looks pissed.
