It's 4050 and the world has had to revert back to basics. Kacela is possibly the best huntress and hired asassin in the entire of Escocia. The country is alive with thieves, killers, and hunters. A new sickness known as the Mal Plague is striking Escocia, and the people are dropping like flies. The only way to stay immune is to stay away......

12. Wardens

The room at the Remedy Inn was cold. The air outside was freezing and Kacela's breath came in puffy white clouds. As soon as Laine had left the room, Kacela had stripped to her underwear and hopped into the single, cold bed. Watching the stars out of the glass pane in the window, Kacela was suddenly startled by a loud bang and a crash from the bar.

'Someone Crossed!' came a booming voice. 'A peasant girl, believed to have a black horse. Where is she? Does she dwell here? She has an Escocian accent and is likely to be travelling with Lamna!'

Kacela sat bolt upright, panic seizing her chest. Wardens. Wardens were here.

Her asassins mind took over immediately. Kacela sized up the window, looking for some sort of catch at the edge that would allow her to open it. She found the small, rusty iron loop and forced it open. She slipped like her skin was oiled into her crimson ninja outfit - it was the best she had for this type of situation. Gathering up her money bags, clothing and food, Kacela had one leg hooked up over the windowsill when heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs and several burly men in Warden uniforms burst through the door.

Time seemed frozen. The Wardens stopped, shocked, at the sight of a red ninja climbing from the window, clutching two large bags and a small one. Kacela stopped too, sitting astride the windowsill, nervously eyeing up her enemy. But only for a few seconds before she seized the opportunity and disappeared from the Wardens' sight.

Letting out mixed cries of surprise and anger, the Wardens raced to the window in time to see Kacela sliding down the wall with easy grace. Landing lightly on her toes, Kacela raced down the small dirty alleyway to the stables.

Pushing past the stableboy, she threw herself onto Ignis and kicked him. Ignis was a born racehorse, ready to fly into action at any moment, and the instant Kacela had mounted, he pelted from the stables, down the alley, just managing to avoid crushing the Wardens under his hooves as they came tumbling out of the Inn. Kacela looked back in time to spot Laine waving, and she waved back.
