8. Oversleeping

I stood in the library, scanning through the titles of the ‘Mythology’ section. I always found it fairly ironic that there would be a mythology section in a library for a city full of psychics, vampires, animaguses, god knows what else. I dug my heels into the ground. My mind was trailing and I was certain that I had just seen the book I was looking for. I trailed across the second from last shelf on the massive piece of oak until I found an old, leather-spined, thick book that looked like it should belong in the basement of a grandfather's house. I hooked my index finger around the overhanging tip off the spine and slid the book out from the shelf. It was covered in the dust of hundreds of generations. This hadn’t been looked at in years. The book had various different religious symbols surrounding a large Pentagram that covered the front cover. The book was titled ‘Untold Pagan Myths’.
I walked over to the long table in the middle of the massive room. The full moon’s silver light flowed through the huge glass window. I was completely alone in the abandoned room. The eerie atmosphere made me think of how many ghosts roamed the walls as I looked up at them. A clap of thunder outside sent a shiver down my spine. I shook off the thoughts of lightning and ghosts and lifted the cover of the heavy book.
My eyes followed my finger down the contents until I found what I was looking for. ‘The Mark of Sardonyx’.
 Damn.
I turned page upon page to the ancient symbol that was printed on the page.
I was about to start reading when Cenaill walked through the door. Her face lit up when it met with mine.
“I thought I’d find you in here, bookworm.”
“Official business Cenaill.” I replied, hiding the smirk on my face.
“Official? No you really do sound like a PA.” She joked. She knew I hated my job. “What’s that?”
I rotated the book to face her. I recognised the bemused look on her face.
“The Mark of Sardonyx. This guy’s been around for a while.”
“Sorry, who?” Her face had changed into a stern stare at the mark on the book.
“Sardonyx. Real old vampire. Nasty piece of work too. Apparently he’s still around. Shame really, after all these centuries, you’d think the universe should be free from a guy like him.
Cenaill sat down, half scared, half angry.
 “Know him?” I asked, concerned.
“Don’t get into this Sabian. I mean it.”
 “What? What do you mean?”
“You don’t have to, but seriously, if you value your peace of mind, you won’t look into this. Don’t dig up the parts of the past that you don’t want to know.”
I spent a couple of seconds looking at her, massively confused, until Hayden burst into the room with Chaz trailing behind him. Both were out of breath and relieved to see the two of us.
 “Sabian, move!” Chaz shouted.
I lifted myself from the creaking, wooden chair and ran over to them. Cenaill swiftly joined us.
“What’s going on?” I asked as me and Cenaill ran behind of them down marble corridors until they ran into Pandora’s chamber.
“You tell me.” Hayden said, indicated to the marble slab where my sister slept. But now it was cracked clean in half and there was no sign of her.
“Where the hell is she?” Cenaill exclaimed.
“That’s the problem.” Chaz explained, “We haven’t got the faintest clue.”
We all looked at the cracked slab. Slowly, we looked up in unison. One of the squares of glass at the top had shattered from the inside.
 “Pandora’s awake.” Cenaill said.
“In that case,” I said looking up, “We can expect all hell to break loose on the human’s world and ours. We need her. Now.”
