Okay Barbie

This might seem like a clechay and it probably is. Raven lives in a house with her aunt after her parents died in a bushfire in their old coastal town. She's been shipped off to now bunk with Aunt Stephanie in her tight villa, who isn't as pleasant as she sounds.

1. Mind Your Head

1

The smell wasn't inviting. It was mildew and moudly cinderblock then again salty from the ocean. Aunt Stephanie emerged from the house in long, effortless strides. I stood, a little distracted by her light moustache. My knuckles whitened as I gripped my bag tighter.
"Raven, is it?"
"Yes'mam."
I didn't know Aunt Stephanie very well. I can recall one letter I sent to her and then it was sent back with a RETURN stamp on it. I don't know what bugged Aunt Stephanie the most. Me, a nuisance and a bump in her agenda or was it that I was swaying there in my adolescent stage wearing nothing but a winter coat and 1930's cotton frock. Aunt Stephanie blinked.
"You're taller than I imagined."
"I've grown almost six inches this year."
"Mind your head when you come inside."
I tucked my easeful fringe behind my ear and penguin-walked inside with my bags. The air was cloying with rich sugary buiscuit.
"Do you like to bake?" I called as Aunt Stephanie shambled down the hall.
"Have you ever taste a custard apple my dear?"
"Um?"
Aunt Stephanie paused and twisted around to meet me eye to eye, nose to knife-nose.
"You haven't lived my dear."
She continued down the hallway. "Spare room is upstairs, first door to your left and the bathroom and toilet are seperate so don't be confused. Kitchen is straight ahead. Television goes off at six thirty and you may not touch it without my permission. Questions, Raven?"
"No'mam."
"Get to your room and I'll call you for supper. You drink tea, right?"

I got to my bedroom and flopped on the covers. They were dough around my legs. The sheets were crisp and clean. Four walls addled as my aunt was scatterbrained, surrounded me like a small shoebox. I wasn't exactly living a household paradise, but I guess Aunt Stephanie was okay and I had a lot to learn about her yet...
