On The Outskirts Of The Gang

Rosa is a pretty, self-conscious girl who wants to be cool. She's a bit afraid of Jessica, the most popular person in the entire year. As she clings on at the edge of Jessica's gang, she notices things that slowly make her realise that there is something odd going on...

3. Thursday 25th September

I'm sorry about how late I'm writing tonight. I was at Imogen's house! Let me explain:

Lessons today were a drag. All the teachers are giving us assessments 'to see where we're up to'. They weren't too challenging though; we'd done most of the topics in class. We got put in register-order seating plans so that it was easier to enter our grades on the system. To the left of me every time was Betty Cadger, a short, stubby girl with flabby cheeks and spots. For the entire day, she was sighing and groaning like she was in constant pain. At the end of each test, she would plead for more time, crying out some thing along the lines of "But I'm only on the first page!" She's pathetic! Its not that she has learning difficulties or anything. I happen to know that she sits through every class stuffing her face with sweets, so all the blame's on her.

I left the last room - the Maths one - with Katya and Felicity, discussing how we thought we'd done. Betty clumped past us wearing block-like navy shoes and a green and yellow striped duffel coat. Honestly, some people have no fashion sense. To top it off, her shoulder-length mousy brown hair was pulled back in scruffy bunches that made her face look even puffier.

"Oh, hello Betty!" Felicity exclaimed. Just glancing between the faces of graceful Felicity and clumsy Betty made me want to laugh out loud.

"Hi!" squeaked Betty, before scampering off. From now on, I'll call her the mouse.

Right, back to the explanation. Jessica (looking spectacular), Hattie and Imogen were waiting by the gates. Each one of them had their hair in a low side ponytail, sleek and stylish. Jessica led them over.

"Felicity, is your dad picking both of us up from Imogen's later? Because Hattie needs a lift." Jessica stared at her expectantly.

"Yes. He'll be fine with one extra person," Felicity said dismissively,"How are you getting home, Katya? There would be one seat free."

"No, my mum's taking me because we're going to a restaurant afterwards," Katya replied,"Is Rosa invited?"

"She is if she wants to be." Imogen turned to me."Do you want to come to mine? We'll just be chatting, doing makeovers, that kind of thing."

"Ok, sure!" I said. My mind was going crazy. Wow! It was happening to me!

"Yay!" said - wait for it - Jessica. I was over the moon - inside. I didn't want to break my calm-and-collected face.

The rest of the afternoon was great fun. We all tried out new hair styles and had a laugh over the class gossip. When I came home, I was exhausted.

I'm not deluded. I know I can't be a full member of the gang yet - I'm not quite cool enough. At least I know I'm closer than anyone else. That's fine... for now!
