On The Outskirts Of The Gang

Rosa is a pretty, self-conscious girl who wants to be cool. She's a bit afraid of Jessica, the most popular person in the entire year. As she clings on at the edge of Jessica's gang, she notices things that slowly make her realise that there is something odd going on...

29. Monday 20th October

There was another Annie rehearsal this afternoon. It was my best performance of my solos so far. When I heard the music, something just clicked and I got it. Everybody was silent after I sang, and then someone started clapping. The gang joined in, and soon the whole hall was filled with the unbelievable sound of applause. Eyes closed, I thought to myself, 'This is all for me!' It was the most amazing feeling I've had since, well, Friday. Getting into the gang was on another level though, and to have that many people appreciate something I'd done - it was unthinkable. Before today.

The rest of the day has been quite uneventful. I was hoping that people would come over to me more, but it was just like any other Monday - except from the odd nervous glance from some of the quieter people in my form. I guess they thought I might go all cool and full of myself, but I'm just going to stay the same. If it got me into the gang, then my current behaviour must be good enough. There's no point being over-the-top about it.

Penny was in school today, but she's got her own timetable now. Miraculously, she's not in my form or any of my classes. During break and lunch, she mainly hung around with Megan, although the timid girl seemed a bit on edge sometimes when Penny whispered things in her ear. I assume that they were horrible, because shock would often flicker across Megan's face before she hid it. I feel sorry for her, because she's such a nice girl. Penny's venomous words must be quite a surprise to her. I hope she doesn't get caught up in an unwanted friendship.

Tomorrow and Wednesday are inset days because the staff are all doing training programmes. It seems a bit silly to have them in the week before half term, but you can never tell what teachers are thinking. Anyway, Felicity's invited the whole gang to stay at this hotel that her uncle is the manager of. It's in a town near the countryside, and they do pony-trekking sessions. There's also a pool and a fabulous restaurant. Fliss (I can call her that now I'm in the gang) says that it's amazing, and the views from the rooms are really beautiful. We'll be staying in what they call the 'extensive family suite', which has three bedrooms. They all have double beds that can be separated into two singles. Felicity is sharing a room with Jessica, Imogen is going with Hattie and I'm in one with Katya. All the bedrooms apparently back onto a big lounge with a TV, a radio and a computer.

I won't be taking this diary with me because I wouldn't have time to write. We leave at half past six today, and get back Wednesday afternoon at around two o'clock. I'll tell you all about it then. Bye!
