On The Outskirts Of The Gang

Rosa is a pretty, self-conscious girl who wants to be cool. She's a bit afraid of Jessica, the most popular person in the entire year. As she clings on at the edge of Jessica's gang, she notices things that slowly make her realise that there is something odd going on...

22. Monday 13th October

The first Annie rehearsal is out of the way! They were all surprised at me for some reason. I guess I'm better at singing when I'm pretending to be a character. I certainly have to change my voice for Miss Hannigan!

I realise that I haven't written about what she's like. Well, she is horrible to all the orphan girls, making them do loads of housework. She sings a whole song about how sick she is of little girls, but then she's supposed to be a bit tipsy at the time; it says she has a bad drinking habit. Towards the end, though, she ends up trying to save Annie's life. Clearly, there's a good side to her deep down.

I described how I was going to play her to Penny in detail yesterday on our shopping trip. She appeared to be taking it all in, but I think I must have been boring her a bit. It didn't matter that much when we found a shop that looked promising; every part of our conversation was forgotten as we rushed inside. There, on top of a pile of 'sale' boxes, was a black roller-skate with little silver stars. I immediately grabbed it and began to search for the box containing the matching one. Penny was left to browse by herself.

She told me afterwards that it was the assistant's fault. He was the one who pulled the box from the bottom of the tower, she didn't even touch it. The guy was red in the face, insisting that she'd knocked it. I think he didn't want to be shown up in front of the girl who worked there. He was showing off to her every time I looked over, as well as winking at her over the counter when I payed. It's a good thing that she just ignored him because he was a smarmy idiot. The whole trip was a bit disappointing. At least one of us got what we went in for.

Jessica's gang kept away from me today. I can't think what I could have done to upset them. Why would I want to get on their bad side when I am so close to being one of them? Perhaps I'm further away than I think, and they are reminding me not to push my luck. I don't need the warning. I know well enough how quickly they can change from being intimate to intimidating.

Penny keeps saying to me that she doesn't understand why I'm so in awe of them. When she switches to my school - which she assures me will happen soon - she will understand that they are as high up as you can get. It will be fun to do introductions and I might seem like a girl who knows everyone. That would be nice, although it wouldn't last long! As you probably know, I'm not the kind of girl who makes everyone want to get in with them as soon as they meet me. You have to be Jessica or Felicity for that.

It's not actually that long until half term. Me and Penny have already planned a swimming trip and a sleepover, not to mention the baking days! I haven't been this organised about my holidays before. I think Penny's a great influence on me. She's ringing me right now, actually. I'd better pick it up. Bye!
