7. Realizations

“Let me see It.” said Mr. John, grabbing the note from my hand before I could even read it. But as he was reaching for the note he knocked over his coffee and it spilled all over the note. I tried to open it and read it before all the ink ran off the paper, but it was too late. “Oh, my. I’m so sorry, Harry. I didn’t mean to.” I was as angry as ever, but there was no reason to be mad at him. “It’s okay. Let’s just go home.”  The car ride home was silent, but when I looked over at him I could see the faint hint of a smile on his face. The time flew by and we were home. I got out of the car and silently walked to the house, not even saying a word to John.

I was feeling a hundred different things at that moment. But most of all, I was confused. And I hated that feeling more than anything. I gathered all of the stuff I had about Mr. X and anything else related to this mystery. What stood out above all was the note that I had found in the clock tower. I had known something was off about it, but couldn’t determine what. But then I realized something - it smelled like smoke.

Everything was starting to fit together now. How John Hold had known what I was talking about and never questioned what I wanted. How he had known exactly where the key was and why the door was silent. It all made sense. John Hold had kidnapped my father and he was going to pay.
