Winner of the Crossover Competition! *_* I decided to combine two of my favourite fandoms - Harry Potter and Hunger Games to come up with - The Hogwarts Games! I've tried to pick up the story of Harry Potter from where JKR left it, so the main characters are the new generation of Potters and Weasleys. It's set in Hogwarts and I've incorporated the concept of the Games in here. I've really worked hard on this, so I hope you like it :)

23. Chapter Twenty-Three

Albus couldn’t hear anything but his own screams.

He didn’t know how he ended up where he had, because all he remembered was screaming his head off as the savage beasts tore open Ace’s body and ripped his insides to shreds. The image had burned itself on his memory forever. Even when he closed his eyes, he could still see it imprinted on the back of his eyelid. Blood spilling, fangs tearing flesh, claws ripping organs…he felt like he would pass out. Maybe he did. He couldn’t tell for sure but the next thing he knew, he was lying on his back on cool hard ground with water dripping on his face.

When he opened his eyes, he realised it was drizzling. Cool raindrops pattered the ground and on his face and he felt them soothe his skin which had been burnt horribly in that desert heat. He wondered when and how they had gotten out of it and where they had ended up.

He sat up and looked around. He seemed to be on a forest floor, except that trees were pretty scarce. He couldn’t spot anyone immediately but when he looked carefully he could see them all huddled under a tree. He quickly rushed over to see what was happening and what he saw made his head spin some more.

Rose’s arm had almost been cut off.

There was a lot of blood. Rose seemed to be unconscious but in pain even so. A little chunk of flesh was holding her arm fixed to her shoulder. James, Ariana and Grace were all just sitting there, staring, wondering what to do. James was in tears, something Albus had never seen on his brother's face before. The backpack was in front of him, the kit of medicines open but he was despairing. Albus realised what it was. We don’t have anything to save Rose’s arm.

He didn’t know what to say or do. All he could feel was numbness. Those trolls had done this to his sister. She had said she could handle them. Why had he believed her? Why had he let her go all by herself? “She had been doing well,” said James distantly. “Tricked those trolls quite easily but then it went horribly wrong when one of them dropped a bat on her head. I tried to help, got her on the broomstick but she couldn’t keep her balance…she just fell and they – they crunched her ribs and ripped her arm out. I couldn’t – couldn’t do anything.” And then he broke down.

Ariana put a hand on his shoulder awkwardly, her face impassive. Grace cried silently. And then, at long last, Albus knew what was going on in their heads to make them feel so helpless. Rose is going to die.

No. No, it wasn’t possible. He couldn’t let Rose die. He had already seen one horrifying death today. He couldn’t allow Rose to die now. With a sharp pang he remembered it had been for Lily that Rose had volunteered to be in the Games in the first place. She had done it just to save Lily. He couldn’t let her die after all that…he would feel too indebted.

“Rose?” he knelt besides her, feeling tears forming in his eyes. “Wake up. Rose. You can’t die. No, I won’t let you. Say something!”

She quivered, moaned a little but fell silent again. Albus felt her pulse. It was weak, but it was still there. And she was breathing too. There was still hope. He got on his feet, looked to the sky and shrieked on top of his voice. “Sponsors! Please! Professor Longbottom? Send something. You had promised. Please.” He waited in a silence that was punctuated only by James’ sniffs, but nothing came.

“Please.”

Raindrops kept falling on his face but nothing else came from the sky for Rose’s aid. Albus realised this was it. The sponsors knew nothing could be done to save her. She was too damaged, too hurt to be saved even with proper Healers. All hope was lost.

Albus sank to the ground, buried his face in his palms and cried for what felt like forever.
