Winner of the Crossover Competition! *_* I decided to combine two of my favourite fandoms - Harry Potter and Hunger Games to come up with - The Hogwarts Games! I've tried to pick up the story of Harry Potter from where JKR left it, so the main characters are the new generation of Potters and Weasleys. It's set in Hogwarts and I've incorporated the concept of the Games in here. I've really worked hard on this, so I hope you like it :)

21. Chapter Twenty-One

Albus had had no idea trolls could survive in such horrible desert conditions. It turned out they could.

The four of them and their hippogriff had not travelled very far before they came across two. In the open desert with nothing but occasional tiny shrubs and cactuses dotting the landscape, they had gotten a good enough warning of their approach about five minutes before they actually reached them. In these minutes, the question before them was what they should – flee or fight?

Obviously, flee.

“Hey, wait!” Rose shouted when they had run a little distance. “Is it just me or…does it look like those trolls are chasing someone?”

“Rose!” James was beside himself with rage. “We cannot afford to run a social service center! Now come on before they reach us.”

“Oh it doesn’t matter, they’re very slow,” Rose waved him off. “But I think we should fight.”

“You have got to be kidding me,” James swore.

“Hey, our parents did it,” Rose had the glint in her eye that Albus had only seen in James before. “In their first year! We can do it too. I’ve read about them, I know we can handle them. They’re really stupid, believe me.”

“That is not the point,” said James. “The point is, if we stay to fight, you’re going to say we should get whoever those trolls are chasing for our allies too. I am not allowing that.”

“Don’t be such a –”

“Guys,” said Albus, growing a bit white. “In case you didn’t notice, they seem to have spotted us.”

And they had. The trolls were moving directly towards them now. They had been chasing two tributes, Albus couldn’t see their faces, who were screaming and running towards them. For a brief moment, he wondered why they weren’t fighting. With the right tact, it wasn’t difficult to trick a troll. But then he saw exactly what was frightening them. He felt like the world had stopped making sense.

“Werewolves,” he breathed. “Behind them. A whole pack. The trolls are leading but there are werewolves following them.”

Nothing needed to be said now. They ran for it without question, Rose cursing herself for having delayed them. Now the fear was real. If there had been a slight hope among them that they could overcome the trolls, it had been shattered as soon as they had spotted the werewolves. Bloodthirsty beasts running at a tremendous speed, closing in disturbingly fast…

Albus didn’t know what to think. How could they send werewolves in the arena? What would happen if someone got bitten? They would transform into werewolves themselves. That was for life, surely Trevelyan couldn’t allow that. But this was Trevelyan he was talking about…he didn’t feel very hopeful as the four of them raced across the sandy dunes with the hippogriff at their tail.

“Okay, now this is stupid!” James stopped and removed his backpack, cursing. “We have a broomstick. We can outrun them in no time.”

“We have only one, James,” Albus said. “Hurry up, please, they’re very close.”

James wasn’t listening. He got the Firebolt out, mounted it and told Rose to get on it with him and hold on tight. “Albus, you and Ace can ride the hippogriff, right? It likes you both. I’m sure it’ll let you hitch a ride. Now hurry.” And then he flew away at a great speed.

Albus realised they had no time to waste. He could hear the growls of the werewolves now and the thundering footfalls of the trolls. The screams were getting clearer too but he had to block those sounds out. He was afraid he would have to help if he looked to see who it was.

“Ready?” he asked as they had both mounted the hippogriff’s back, and without waiting for a reply, he kicked its side and it took off. He prayed it wouldn’t get annoyed and throw them off its back in the middle of the ride. He could see James and Rose flying high up in the air, higher than even the trolls’ reach and urged the hippogriff to follow.

The screams seemed to be echoing in his ear. He tried hard to stop hearing it but he couldn’t. What was happening to those two? They were girls, he knew that from their voices. What were those creatures going to do to them? There were too many of them for two to handle alone. The trolls could crush them. The werewolves could rip them. How far could they run?

And finally, he couldn’t help it. As they shot up towards the sky, his head whipped back to look. And what he saw wrenched his heart. This was a bad idea, he told himself. He could see the girls had managed to put some distance between them and the beasts but the smaller one looked like she was going to fall anytime soon. He narrowed his eyes to see who it was, in spite of himself and when he did, he felt like he would collapse.

It was Ariana and the little girl with her was Grace Charms. She was so small. So little. So young. Just like Lily…in a brief moment, Albus knew Lily would have been in the same place as she was if Rose had not volunteered for her. Grace was going to die.

“James!” he heard himself crying. “It’s Grace Charms. It’s that little girl. They’re going to get her.”

James zoomed back to him and steadied his pace. “Al, we can’t go back.”

“She’s so small,” he was near tears now. “Just like Lily…”

He saw James and Rose go white in the face. “No don’t do this,” said James. “You can’t think of Lily now. No, not now. We can’t help Grace…we can’t…”

“James,” Rose sounded unsure but urgent. “Please.”

There was a moment in which James had to speak, and after a pause of hesitance, he said, “If we die for them, I’m going to kill you Albus.”
