Winner of the Crossover Competition! *_* I decided to combine two of my favourite fandoms - Harry Potter and Hunger Games to come up with - The Hogwarts Games! I've tried to pick up the story of Harry Potter from where JKR left it, so the main characters are the new generation of Potters and Weasleys. It's set in Hogwarts and I've incorporated the concept of the Games in here. I've really worked hard on this, so I hope you like it :)

24. Chapter Twenty-Four

James refused to leave without giving Rose a decent farewell.

The rain was becoming persistent and heavy, the forest floor was now exceedingly slippery and the scarce trees were not providing much shelter. It had been Ariana who had suggested that they start moving again soon. Ever since they had saved her life, she seemed to have made an unspoken agreement to not kill them as long as she didn’t have to. Albus was quite grateful for that.

Rose had stopped breathing a while ago. Albus couldn’t bring himself to look at her. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw James lift her body that was already falling apart and rested her under a banyan tree that would give her body some shelter from the tremendous downpour. Grace had found flowers somewhere that she spread over Rose and whispered a few words that sounded like a prayer. After that, nobody had dared to look where she lay until her body was magically lifted into the air by the Gamemakers’ spells.

That night, when the sky flashed the pictures of all who had died lately, Ace and Rose’s faces looked down at them despondently. Albus felt as though their eyes were alive and burning holes into his forehead. Ariana counted on her fingers how many tributes were left in the arena. “Bilius and Maryann died the first day at the Cornucopia, I killed Gary Matthew and Samantha Rofhul on the same day. I remember seeing Jill and Rufus’ pictures in the sky, and Lillian and Scorpius died last night. And now,” she carefully avoided saying Ace or Rose’s names, “with two more gone, we’re left with…just six tributes.”

Since four of them were together, it meant only Natalie and Nathan remained out there somewhere for them to finish.

“We need to move,” Ariana said urgently but not unkindly which was unusual for her. “I have a feeling this rain is going to get worse. And when the Albert twins figure out it’s only the four of us remaining, they’ll come hunting for us. Or the Gamemakers might do something to drive us close together soon.”

“I know,” James said in his coarse voice, looking at Albus fiddle with Ace’s cork necklace in his hands. “But I’m not coming with you.”

Albus’ head snapped up to face his brother. “What?”

“Albus, I’ve decided we have to part ways now. It won’t do for us to remain allies anymore.”

“I’m sorry,” Albus found himself saying. “If this is about the fact that I suggested risking our lives to go back and help Ariana and Grace, then I’m sorry.” If we die for them, I’m going to kill you Albus. These had been James’ exact words. And now, two of them had died. Albus felt somewhere inside that this had all been his fault.

“No, it isn’t,” James’ eyes grew cold and distant. “I reckon if we stick together for much longer now, it may come down to the two of us. I don’t want to be the one to kill you.”

His words hit Albus with such force, it was incredible.

James began unpacking the backpack. “Ace really had an idea. He’d told Rose and she told me. I know where to go now,” he looked up. “You don’t. It gives me an advantage, quite fairly. So now you can figure your way out yourself or just stay back here in the rain.”

Albus could not believe his brother would do this to him.

James split the supplies, taking only a fourth of it for himself. He bundled it up in a huge leaf from a nearby tree, and without another word, turned and walked away into the night.
