Winner of the Crossover Competition! *_* I decided to combine two of my favourite fandoms - Harry Potter and Hunger Games to come up with - The Hogwarts Games! I've tried to pick up the story of Harry Potter from where JKR left it, so the main characters are the new generation of Potters and Weasleys. It's set in Hogwarts and I've incorporated the concept of the Games in here. I've really worked hard on this, so I hope you like it :)

15. Chapter Fifteen

“I think we should get out of here.”

Albus had just noticed that all around the Cornucopia, a battle was raging. Tributes were engaged in one-on-one combats with each other using daggers and knives and the occasional wands with the lucky ones. There was bloodbath all around them, people being impaled on swords or cursed with magic. Some were lying motionless on the ground – whether they were dead or wounded, Albus didn’t know. Nathan and Natalie were starting to rise again and they had a horrifying look in their eyes that only suggested they would be coming hunting for the three of them anytime now.

“Yeah, but where can we go?” James said. The other side of the Cornucopia was just like the side they were on. Ten meters of land and then water again. In fact, in every direction they looked, they could see water after some distance of land. It looked like this Cornucopia was on a very small island. “We’re pretty much stuck in here, aren’t we?”

Albus knew that wasn’t possible. The arena could not be this small. Unless the Gamemakers wanted the tributes to live underwater or something. “Are we supposed to be going back inside the water?”

“Don’t be silly,” said Rose. “I’m not going anywhere near that freezing cold water again when I can’t even swim.”

“How did you make it out of the water in the first place?”

She looked at Albus with an incredulous look. “Haven’t you figured it out yet?” She pointed at Albus’ middle, where he had worn the padded belt. “That thing is enchanted. If you can’t swim, it pulls you out of water and helps with floatation. Isn’t it too obvious?”

Now Albus understood what had shot him upwards when he was about to drown underwater. He felt a slight gratitude towards the Gamemakers for including this belt in their gear. Then he guessed it was necessary. How would there be the Games if all the tributes just died by drowning before they even got a chance to fight on land? No blood, no fun.

People around them were falling to the ground faster now. Other tributes were going to turn on them very soon. And with all the attractive things in their hands, attention was surely going to draw towards them. And it did. Within seconds, Arian had grabbed Albus’ throat with her arm. Rose and James tried to fight her but she was already pointing her wand at his temple threateningly, as though she was saying that if they made a move, she would finish Albus right there.

“Let him go.” James growled.

“Make me.”

Rose pulled out a wand she had just found and pointed it straight at Ariana’s face, all of it happening within a nanosecond so that Ariana had no chance to do anything. When James tried to do the same though, she foresaw it and sent a curse at Albus that made him keel with pain.

“Nobody makes a move,” she announced. “Give me your supplies. All of it.”

Rose shot a spell at her but she dodged it and sent another curse at Albus instead. Rose shrieked and lowered her wand in surrender when Albus fell to the ground, clutching himself and writhing in pain. He felt hatred flood his heart. This was real. The Games had begun. People were going to die now. And if he didn’t do anything very soon, he was going to be among the first to be dead.

“Let him go!” Rose pressed. “Now.”

“Not until you hand over that backpack to me. I can kill him in a second, and you know I won’t hesitate.”

Do something. Albus told himself. Ariana’s eyes were fixed at Rose and James, who were holding the backpack between them, actually considering handing it over, while she had her wand pointing at him. He could see that Rose still had the wand in her hand and she could catch her off guard with a pretty good curse if only Ariana would look away from her. Albus knew he’d have to distract Ariana.

“Hey,” he said. “Fight me.”

She laughed. “You don’t even have a wand. And I don’t need to fight you. As long as you’re at the other side of my wand, you’re dead meat to me.”

She still had her eyes on Rose and James, who seemed to have understood what Albus was trying to do. He knew he needed something better than this to really distract Ariana. He decided to do something very stupid. He ran for it.

As soon as Ariana had registered it she turned, ready to shoot a spell at him but Rose was too fast for her. Before she knew it, Ariana had been hit with a Body-Bind Curse and she was lying motionless on the ground. Rose looked at James. “Am I supposed to kill her or something?”

“What? No! You couldn’t.”

Rose nodded. She bent to pick up Ariana’s wand instead and they ran to catch up with Albus, who had already gotten into a duel with Gary Matthews. Without anywhere to go, the killing rate was growing. He wondered what was happening. The Gamemakers wouldn’t want all the tributes to die out within an hour of the beginning of the Games. But with nowhere else to go, what could they possibly do but stay at the Cornucopia and fight till their deaths?

The answer came immediately. It began with a slight, easily-ignorable rumble in the ground but soon grew to become a full-fledge earthquake of sorts. The entire island was shaking. People were getting thrown off their feet and rolled away from the Cornucopia. Albus got knocked off too and pushed towards the shore. He tried to cling onto the ground for dear life but the intention of the quake was clear. With a mighty blow, all the tributes were pushed out of the island for good.

They were supposed to be in the water.
