Friends and Fiends

When Hayward was 8, his parents sent him to a camp for one month. But what they didn't know was that the camp was actually a boot camp, and no one was allowed to leave the camp until they were 19.
But when Hayward discovers a new friend, he also discovers new fiends. And still, Hayward and his new friend manage to ignore the fiends and do things no one has ever thought of doing before.

2. Chapter 2

Sergeant Jones gripped the cold metal handle of the shaft and pulled. The shaft door slid close and clicked. Sergeant Jones tightened the lock with a push and wiped her sweaty forehead.

"Penny, the children are waiting," said Captain Levi. Sergeant Jones growled.

"What'd I tell you about using my first name?" demanded Sergeant Jones. Captain Levi straightened his captain's hat and coughed.

"Uh, sorry sir- I mean ma'am." Sergeant Jones crossed her musclar arms and sniffed the air.

"Yes, I can smell the children," she said. Captian Levi shuddered and took a small step back. He straightened his captain's hat and cleared his throat.

"They want you to tell them why the alarms sounded," Captain Levi explained. "After all, they're all awake at 3:00 in the morning, waiting in the cold wilderness." Sergeant Jones snorted.

"And why should I care?" she inquired.

"Because they're your responsibility. Yes, you have Jake, Finn, and I, but you're still the owner of this camp on paper. So you have to tell them," Captain Levi explained. Sergeant Jones sat down on a moldy log and drew a circle in the dirt. Then, she drew another circle around it. Sergeant Jones placed one twig in the inner circle and three sticks in the outer circle. Then she grabbed an armful of sticks and placed them in a pile outside the circles.

"You see here, Levi, there are two circles. You see the stick in the inner circle? Yes, that's me. And the three sticks in the outer circle? Yes, that's you, Jake, and Finn. And guess who the sticks outside the circles are!"

"Um, the kids?" Captain Levi guessed.

"Yes! And you see, if one of you "helpers" messes up, this is what will happen." Sergeant Jones rubbed two sticks together and sparks began to fly. She scraped the sparks into the underbrush, starting a fire. Sergeant Jones fed the fire a little, then grabbed a stick from the outer circle. She dropped it in the fire, making the stick disappear immediately. Sergeant Jones laughed. "And you see, Levi, when one of those kids turn 19, they shall join all the helpers who have messed up. But you see, the kids always are replaced. As for the helpers, I will hold auditions until I find the burliest man with the biggest muscles, the shortest buzz cut, the deepest voice, and the biggest wallet! Ha! Then shall I show you how it's done! Oh, I love my job!" And with that, Sergeant Jones stood up from the log and trotted off to the stage.
