Breaking Free

Ever felt smothered by everyone else's idea of what your life should be like? Have you ever just wanted to say "Stop! It's my life!" to those closest to you? We all have, haven't we? I bet you were too afraid to do it though. So you kept your mouth shut, and did exactly what you always told yourself you would never do: you followed the rules set by people who don't really know you, and let THEM control your life. But what could happen if you finally just said no? If you decided to follow your own dream? Would something amazing happen? Would you fall in love? Would you find what you've been looking for your whole life? What could happen if you just...broke free?

51. Slight Twist

As soon as Belle and Kaylie had pulled out of Louis' driveway, Kaylie immediately started the questioning.

"Who is Alan? Why did Louis freak out? I mean Belles is a freaking adorable nickname! Is there a reason you didn't tell me whatever it is you're hiding? I mean if you don't wanna tell me, if it's too personal, I guess I understand but-- actually I don't understand, I tell you everything! I know we've only been friends for two weeks but I feel like you're family by now I mean you can tell me anything and--"

"Kayles, hold up!" Belle interrupted with an exasperated chuckle, glancing away from the road to look at her friend for just a second. "Look I've wanted to tell you everything, from the very beginning until now, but...I don't know, it's a long story and I didn't want to seem like I was looking for pity or attention. And the Belles thing isn't a big deal, just...let's just get to the restaurant and everything will make sense. Okay?"

Kaylie was silent for a second but finally she sighed and nodded. For the next couple of minutes the two friends just chatted about anything else until they pulled up outside the restaurant.

The place was small and low key, so there wasn't anyone there to recognize the two friends. They walked in and Belle specifically requested a secluded table in the back.

Once they were sat down, both girls ordered their drinks, deciding to eat after Belle told her story. Once the drinks came, Belle took a deep breath and started.

Belle told Kaylie everything. Her relationship with her parents growing up as an heiress, becoming friends with Alan, running away with his help, having drunk sex with Louis that very first night after she met the boys, Niall accidentally thinking that she had sex with Zayn, getting with Louis officially, Alan's betrayal when he was working with his father, how he redeemed himself so long ago, how she ignored him even though he was trying to help her, the phone call he made to Louis, Olivia and her father's plan, Alan's murder, Niall kissing her the night she went back to America, being CEO at Cost Enterprises, and then she finally ended up to the day that she met Kaylie.

Once Belle's story was finished, there were a few stray tears that had managed to seep out of her eyes, which she quickly wiped away. Kaylie also had tears running down her face, but she left them. Her mouth was open and she struggled to form words.

"Belle I...I'm so sorry." Kaylie said. "For everything that's happened to you, for Alan's death, for just...everything. I never meant to try and replace Alan or--"

"Stop right there." Belle interrupted seriously. "Don't ever think that you're replacing Alan. He's irreplaceable, and I miss him every day. But you are helping me move on, helping me find myself all over again. Because in all honesty, when I was running my father's company, I did lots of horrible things, I lost my faith in happiness and love and friendship. But you restored that for me." She said with a smile. "You're the sister I never had. The family I always wanted. And I'm so sorry I never told you everything sooner."

Kaylie smiled too, tears streaming down her face. "Oh fuck this." She muttered, standing up abruptly from the table. Belle stood up too, and the two girls hugged each other tightly. "I know we've only been friends for two weeks, but I'm so lucky to have you B--" Kaylie cut herself off, pulling away and looking at Belle skeptically.

Belle just smiled. "It's okay. I want you to call me Belles. It reminds me of him. In a good way." Another tear fell down her cheek.

"Well good. Because that name has kinda grown on me, honestly." Kaylie said. They laughed together, both sitting back down and wiping their faces. A silent second passed. "Hey isn't this like a thing? That friends do?" Kaylie suddenly asked.

Belle cocked her head to the side and chuckled. "What?" She asked.

"Yeah, aren't girl friends supposed to cry and hug and stuff? I read that somewhere, but I've never had a girl friend so I don't know." Kaylie replied in all seriousness.

Belle laughed hard, covering her mouth to keep from squeaking. She finally looked back up at Kaylie. "I don't know Kayles." She managed to say. "But it sounds pretty good to me."

Kaylie smiled. "Me too."

Suddenly Kaylie's phone pinged, signalling that she had a text message. She pulled it out and at first she smiled, but then her smile turned to a sad frown as she read.

Belle cocked her head to the side. "Everything alright?"

Kaylie snapped her head up and shook her head, forcing a grin. "Yeah, everything's fine." She said, forcing the words.

Belle was quiet for a second, just looking at Kaylie. "Why are you lying?" Belle asked.

Kaylie sighed. "It's nothing honestly. We should order, I'm starved." Kaylie said, looking around for the waitress and trying to change the subject.

"Kaylie come on, I just told you my whole life story, why won't you tell me who that text was from?" Belle asked seriously.

A silent second passed with the two friends staring each other down. Kaylie was contemplating whether to tell Belle the truth or not.

"Alright fine." Kaylie said exasperatedly. "It was...a boy." She added vaguely.

Belle's lips turned upward and she scooted forward in her seat, putting her elbows on the table and resting her chin in her hands. "Ooo, tell me more." She said, her eyebrows waggling suggestively.

Kaylie laughed sadly, shaking her head. "No, no, it's not like that, trust me. I wish it was." She said sadly, playing with her fingers.

"What do you mean?" Belle asked.

Kaylie took in a deep breath and exhaled, looking at Belle. "This guy, we...we don't really know each other well, but...I like him. I like him a lot, actually. So much it hurts sometimes." She said, cringing in pain just thinking about this mystery guy.

Belle put her hands down, looking at her friend sympathetically. "Well if you like him so much then why don't you go after him? What's holding you back?"

Kaylie shook her head. "It's complicated."

"How so?"

"Well I thought we were talking as more than friends for a little while, we were texting and talking on the phone all the time, we even hung out a couple times, but then he started talking to this other girl he met." Kaylie chuckled sadly. "He even called me when he met this other girl. He was all like, 'Kaylie she's amazing! I can't wait to ask her out!' It broke my heart. But I just smiled through it."

"Well is he dating this girl now?" Belle asked.

Kaylie shook her head. "No, they're not official or anything. They're sort of like you and Niall right now, they don't really have a label, but they're more than friends."

"Well then you can still tell him how you feel!" Belle said with a smile. Kaylie just shook her head though.

"No I can't." Kaylie said seriously. "It's not that simple, he thinks I'm just his friend, he sees me as nothing more. That text I just got, it was him saying that he felt like his new friend, me, had been avoiding him lately. Friend, Belle. That's all I am to him, all I will ever be."

"Well have you been avoiding him?"

Kaylie laughed bitterly. "Yes, I have. For the past few days I haven't called or texted, or made an effort to see him. I just can't do it, it hurts too bad. I wish I could just let these feelings for him go away, but no matter how hard I try I just can't!" Kaylie put her head down in her hands as she cried silently to herself.

Belle was stunned. She had never seen Kaylie so vulnerable, so broken. A few silent seconds passed between them.

"Kayles, you have to tell him. Maybe he'll surprise you, maybe he would see you as more than a friend if you told him you have feelings for him." Belle suggested hopefully.

Kaylie chuckled sadly, raising her head up to look at Belle. "Belles, even if that did happen by some miracle, it still wouldn't work out between us. You have no idea how complicated this is."

Belle rolled her eyes. "You're talking to me, remember? I'm the master at complicated relationships honey." She said with a smile, trying to lighten the mood. Kaylie managed to laugh a little bit, a smile breaking through her pretty features.

"Yeah you're right, but...I can't tell him. He's got this other girl--"

"Not technically--"

"--and if I told him how I feel then it would all just blow up in my face."

Belle scrunched up her eyebrows. "How so?"

Kaylie took in a deep breath, her face reddening. She couldn't contain her secret any longer.

"Because he's in an internationally famous boyband and has girls flocking at his feet every second and he would never take me seriously!" Kaylie exploded, speaking very fast.

Belle froze, her mouth open in shock. A few strangled sounds managed to escape her mouth as dead air passed between the two friends.

"Are you saying that--"

"Yes." Kaylie interrupted, rubbing her forehead with her hand. "Yes Belle, I am hopelessly in love with one of the members of One Direction."

Belle paled, at a literal loss for words.

"Who?" She managed to choke out.

Kaylie took in a deep breath and lifted her head to look at Belle. She finally said it out loud, feeling a huge weight being lifted off of her shoulders.

"I, Kaylie Elkins, am head over heels for Harry fucking Styles. And he will never like me back."
