This is me.

When Kasey June starts her new school in New York, she tries her best to fit in and stay quiet which is hard when you're being compared to someone who is better than you. When everything starts to go her way, everything changes, everyone who seemed close to her are not who they seem

10. ~Secrets~

After three hours of attempting to roller-skate and trying every flavour of gum New York had to offer I was exhausted. I sleepily pressed the button to our apartment in the elevator and lent against the wall. I knew I should be sad that Penny just died but it was hard not to today. The elevator doors opened and I trailed outwards and across the hall to our door. I pulled down on the handle, locked. Lucky I had my key. I fiddled with it and managed to unlock it. As I stepped inside something didn’t feel right and I suddenly felt paranoid. I hugged myself quickly and switched on all of the lights. How could they leave me alone after what happened to Penny? My parents don’t think about anyone but themselves. The police people had taken our TV and laptops away so I couldn’t even get my mind off things. It was only two PM but it felt like midnight in a horror movie. I hunted in my pocket for my phone and dialled both of their numbers. No reply. Oh my Gosh, where are they? I jumped at the sound of a voice which was dads on the answering machine, ‘Sorry we can’t reach you, please leave your name and number and we’ll get back to you,’ Beep
‘June! Get back to me now, there’s some serious trouble going on now, I don’t care what you say just ring me back, Harrison,’ Beep. Harrison eh? Who’s he? His voice seemed British so I guess he was a friend from back home, I clicked the answering machine and selected the call back button. It rang and rang until I thought he wasn’t going to answer, ‘Nathaniel Harrison here,’ he said in his English accent. I stayed completely silent. The phone switched off. I took a deep sigh of relief. Nathaniel Harrison? I’d never heard of him before. Suddenly making me jump the door started clicking and I ran to unlock the chain, “Mum, dad,” I said with no enthusiasm.
“Kasey,” my mum said with as much expression as I had.
“Somebody called,” I said trying to get something out of them.
“They did?” my mum moved her eyes and fixed them on my dad, “Who?” she kind of hissed.
“Harrison,” I said casually, “Sounded pretty serious, by the tone of his voice and the message he left you,” I clicked the answering machine on and the message re-played. I saw my dads pupils grow slightly bigger,
“I better call him back,”  he said. I sat myself down on the couch trying to get an opportunity to listen to the call but mum immediately took me out of the room,
“It’s just one of your dads old work friends, he hasn’t heard fro them in a while,” mum said leading me into the dining room,
“But it seems pretty serious whatever it is,” I could hear the slight buzzing of my dad’s voice from the next room,
“Oh does it?” my mum wasn’t looking at me directly in my eye, she was gazing off at a photograph which coincidentally had me and Penny in. I was smiling, it was actually kind of a nice picture. I could hear my dad speaking mid way through a sentence, “Not a good idea but we’ll have to!” I leant towards the kitchen door but my mother caught my wrist.
“No Kasey,” she said as I was a dog.
“What are they talking about?” I asked.
“Golf?” my mum said letting go of my wrist, “Coming the press conference tonight? It‘s going to be broadcast all over America,”
“What press conference?” I asked grimly.
“Where they release the details of Penny’s body and what is suspected, people ask questions,” my mum said.
“I don’t want to, but I guess I have to,” I said hoping I would get out of it.
“Yes you do,” mum said, “Go and shower,” I followed her instruction and left the downstairs of our apartment, leaving behind a trail of secrets.
