Mixed Feelings

Icon is the biggest boy band in the world. They're even more popular than One Direction at this point. Liza Nelson can't get enough of them, but Erin Frederick absolutely detests the band. What happens after a chance encounter with one of the band members? Erin's life definitely won't ever be the same.

The days in Boston are filled with rehearsals, concerts, after-parties, and time with Erin.  She comes to both the concerts, and we sneak a few minutes together in my dressing room just to chat.  Okay, and there’s a bit of kissing, too.

The morning before the first concert, we went out to breakfast together.  A bodyguard came along, of course.  We requested that he keep all fans away from us until we were done eating, and he did just that.  Then Erin and I talked to a few and posed for a couple of pictures.  Erin is handling this all very well.

In the car back to the hotel, Erin sleepily laid her head on my shoulder.  I said, “I’ve got special plans for us on New Year’s Eve.”

“Oh?” she replied, lifting her head. “I thought you were performing at the Times Square event.”

“I am, but the band is supposed to finish a little before eleven.  The guys are going to help us sneak away, and Ron will drive us there.  Wear something nice,” I told her.

“You’ve got me interested now,” Erin admitted. “Can’t you tell me more?”

I shook my head.  “Nope.  It needs to be a surprise.  Oh, and how about we go see a movie later in the afternoon on New Year’s Day?”

Les Miserables?  I’ve been dying to see it.”

“Anything you want,” I replied.

At the after-parties, I have no trouble staying away from the girls who practically throw themselves at me.  Erin, although she dresses modestly, attracts my eye the whole time.

Finally, on the thirtieth, we head back to New York.  I’m excited for our New Year’s Eve show, but I also want it over with.  We’re getting a week-long break before we leave to go back on tour.  I absolutely love singing and the fans, but for the past three months, since the tour started, it’s been go-go-go.  I need some time to breathe and relax.

Erin and I go with Derek to pick up his girlfriend, Candace Redwing, before Times Square rehearsals.  She’s an actress and lives in Los Angeles.  Candace spent Christmas with her family, but she wanted to spend New Year’s with Derek.

Candace and Erin immediately hit it off.  Candace is twenty-two, two years older than Derek, but they’re very close.  She’s a nice girl and a fairly good actress who’s just starting out in the business.  I’m sure being linked with a member of Icon can’t hurt her career, although that’s not why she and Derek are dating.  They’ve been together for six months now.

The girls sit backstage at the rehearsal hall while we practice.  I glance over at them a couple times.  It’s good to see them smiling, and laughing, and looking like good friends.  They even jam out to a few songs.  That’s something else that makes me happy.  I know how Erin used to absolutely hate our music.

Then we all as a group of seven go out to dinner.  I can tell Jared wishes Liza could be here, but she’s spending two weeks with her family in Colorado.  According to Erin, it’s a Nelson family tradition to go to a ski resort in the Rockies every year and have a family reunion.

“Do you wish it were just the two of us?” I quietly ask Erin at one point.

She shakes her head.  “A bit, but I like spending time with the guys, too, and Candace is super nice.  I can see why Derek likes her so much.”  Then, since the majority of the patrons in the restaurant aren’t paying us any attention and we’re seated towards the back, Erin gives me a quick kiss that puts a smile on my lips.
