4. The Lucky One

My eyes flash from Tiffany to Liam.

“May I come in?” Tiffany asks after a few moments of pure silence. All that could be heard was the rustle of the leaves from behind Tiffany. It was a dark day outside. And it was beginning to look dark in the house as well.

I glance at Liam, who just stares at Tiffany’s protruding stomach. Not knowing what else to do, I open the door and step aside, allowing her entrance.

She walks straight to the couch and sits herself down. Liam and I follow like zombies. We don’t sit down on the couch next to her; we just stand in front of her staring. My mind is blank and I don’t know what to think.

Tiffany opens her mouth, “So, I guess it’s pretty obvious that I’m pregnant.”

Hearing the p-word come out of her moth sends shivers down my spine. I feel myself nod.

“Which is why I came to talk to you guys,” she continues.

I hear Liam’s voice to my right, “How far are you?”

“Almost four months,” Tiffany says.

Liam and I inhale sharply.

Liam shakes his head, “It’s not mine.”

Tiffany’s icy eyes glare at him, “The baby,” she says emphasizing the b-word, “is yours.”

Liam shakes his heads faster now, “No. It can’t be. You were cheating on me for months with that jackass.”

Tiffany shakes her head back, “I had a DNA test; when Jack found out my baby wasn’t his he got mad and left me.”

“I don’t believe this,” Liam says angrily.

“I have the results in my bag right here,” she says, turning to pull the papers out of her bag.

“Stop!” I yell quickly. Tiffany does stop and looks at me. “I believe you, we don’t need to see them.”

I couldn’t see them. Seeing the papers would make everything 10 times more real and I couldn’t handle that right now. Tiffany slides the papers back into her grey purse. Liam looks at me questioningly and I ignore him. “What do you want?”

“Well, I want the father to help raise the baby. And I don’t have a job so I need some support-.”

“No,” Liam interrupts. “I’m not giving you money and I am not helping to raise this baby that I don’t even know is mine.”

I look at him, “Liam, you have to.”

“Why? No I don’t.”

“It’s the right thing to do Liam. It’s your baby.”

“It’s not my baby! If it was, she would have told me four months ago!” Liam yells.

“I didn’t know until two months ago myself! And I promised it was Jack’s and when I told him he was so incredibly happy. But he wanted to know for sure if the baby was his, so once I got the test he was so mad at the results that he left me,” Tiffany says, eyes beginning to water.

“I can’t deal with this bullshit,”  Liam turns and runs up the stairs. Our bedroom door slams shut.

I want to so badly follow him. I want to go and scream and ask, “Why did this have to happen right when everything was so perfect?” I had never even thought about Tiffany and Liam sleeping together. Oh God, I am so grossed out! I want to yell at Tiffany and tell her to get the hell out and to never talk to us again. I wanted to yell at her for all those terrible things she said to me the last time I saw her and tell her to keep away from Liam.

But, it was Liam’s baby and the baby doesn’t deserve to grow up without a father in its life; especially since the father only lives minutes away. Liam is going to help with this baby, whether I want him to or not.

I sit down next to Tiffany, “I think it’s best if you leave and give him some time,” I say slowly.

“Some time?” Tiffany asks angrily. “This is his baby! He shouldn’t need time!”

I look at Tiffany with pleading eyes, “He’s having a rough time right now, processing. I will get him to lighten up and to help you, I will. I promise.”

She opens her mouth again, “I am not leaving until-.”

“Tiff,” I interrupt. “Please.”

She looks at me one last time, and stands up. She walks to the front door and opens it saying, “If you don’t call me soon, I’m coming back in two days.”

She slams the door behind her.

I stare at the previously opened door for a few moments. My blank mind was filling with all the information it just received. I collapse right there in the living room on the cold, hard, tiled floor.

Why? Why did this happen!? I should have slammed the door in her face when I first opened it! I should not have let her in at all.

I peel myself off the floor and dizzily walk to the bedroom. I open the door quietly to our dark room and see Liam face down on the bed. I can hear his muffled voice muttering and sobbing into the pillow. Liam had seen me cry a countless amount of times, but this was the first time I have seen him cry.

A little while ago I had asked him why he never cried and he responded with a, “I’m a dude. I only cry when something really bad happens.”

This was really bad.

I lied down softly next to him, warning him of my presence. He twisted his head to look up at me and I saw his red eyes. Tears were in the middle of sliding down his cheeks as more were forming in his eyes. I want to kiss him so badly, but it doesn’t feel right.

“Did she leave?”

I nod, “I told her to give you some time.”

“I don’t need time,” he says, rolling over. “I already know I’m not helping.”

“Liam,” I whisper.

“No, Emma. I know you are going to try to convince me and I am telling you right now it’s not going to work,” he says calmly.

“Liam, it’s because of you she’s pregnant. You did it to her, it’s your responsibility.”

He looks at me sadly, “You’re my responsibility. You are all I care about.”

I shake my head, “Well, that needs to change. That baby needs a father, Liam. Tiffany doesn’t have the money to be a single mom.”

“She could have gotten an abortion.”

“She doesn’t believe in abortions.”

More tears fill his eyes, “I don’t want to lose you Emma.”

“You aren’t going to lose me,” I smile weakly. “I’m not going anywhere.”

He wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me closer to him.

“What do I do?”

“You help pay for everything. And in five months, when the baby is born, you help take care of it when Tiffany needs breaks and stuff.”

“Can you help me?” he asks.

“With what?”

“Taking care of it?”

I pull away a little, “I don’t know Liam.”

“Please,” he begs. “I don’t think I can do this without you.”

My heart crumbles at the thought of helping Liam take care of his baby with someone else. This whole situation wasn’t right.

“Fine,” I sigh.

He kisses me on the cheek, “Thank you.”

We lay there in silence for what feels like an hour before my eyes start to droop. When I reach the state of mid-consciousness, I hear Liam speak up:

“I just don’t understand why it had to be my baby. She was cheating on me for months with that Jack guy.”

“You’re an international superstar,” I say right before falling asleep. “It’s clear you have all the luck.”
