3. Summer Love

“Okay,” Liam says as we pull up in front of the studio. “Niall is leaving early today so you wait out here until I text you that he is leaving. When you get my text, walk into the building and you will run into him on the way in. You can make casual conversation or whatever and try to talk to him and see if everything is alright between you two.”

I take a deep breath and nod, “Okay.”

“Okay, good luck,” he says, unbuckling his seatbelt and leaning over to peck my cheek.

“You too. Have fun recording and whatever else you weirdos do in a recording studio,” I giggle.

He laughs and gets out of the car.

“Wait,” I tell him.

“Since when did we become so devious about this? Like, coming up with a plan to get Niall to talk to me?” I ask.

He looks guilty and says quietly the way a kid would tell his mother that he broke a vase, “I don’t know. I just liked the idea of coming up with an awesome master plan.”

I couldn’t help but smile, “Yes and it is very awesome indeed.”

He laughs, “Thanks. I try,” He slams the door shut behind him and walks into the tall building, leaving me to sit in the parking lot to wait for his text.

Nearly an hour later, after I dialed through the entire list of radio stations about 10 times, my phone finally beeped.

Falcon is exiting the building.”

I laughed to myself as I got out of the car. It was about one in the afternoon and there was a cool November breeze that whipped my hair around my face. The trees surrounding the building rustled as I opened the front doors. I became engulfed in warmth as the big metal doors shut behind me. The lobby was big and white. White marble floors, white walls, and white counters all over. The familiar, polished smell drifted up to my nose. I had been here many times, so I knew what floor to head to.

I know I’m nervous. I could feel it in my stomach. The alcohol prevented me from feeling this way last night. But I didn’t have any now. I don’t know what to expect when I talk to Niall. What if he doesn’t even stop to talk to me?

I walk down the long hallway as I thought over what I would say to him. I’ll just be casual about it. My mind races as I turn the corner abruptly, running into someone’s strong chest. His strong deodorant should have warned me who he was even before I looked at him, but my brain didn’t process it fast enough.

“Sorry,” I say instinctively.

“It’s okay,” Niall smiles, his newly straightened teeth showing.

“Hey,” I say a little too quietly than I had hoped.

“Hey Emma.”

“I didn’t get a chance to talk to you last night,” I start, hoping I sound casual.

“You were way too drunk to say anything really,” he replies still smiling.

“Was I?” I ask, feeling the color rush to my cheeks. “I don’t remember.”

“You wouldn’t,” he laughs.

There was an awkward pause before I question him, “How have you been?”

“Good,” he nods. “And you.”

“Good,” I nod back.

Another pause. “So I heard you’re still staying with Liam?”

“Well, yeah. I haven’t been able to find a new apartment since mine burnt down,” I lie. I never really looked for a new apartment since Liam asked me to move in with him.

Niall nods and I could tell he knew I was lying. He looks entertained by our conversation, with a little smirk pressed to his lips.

“You know you don’t have to come up with a secret little plan to try to talk to me, you know? You can just come up and talk to me,” he explains.

“I- what?”

“Everything is fine with us, Emma. It’s okay. I just want things to go back to how they were. Like when we first met on the beach.”

“You mean like when I was so star-struck that I could barely speak?” I wonder.

He laughs, a sound I didn’t realize I had missed so much, “Yeah, but not so intense.”

I nod smiling, “Okay.”

“Well, I should get going. I’ll see you soon, okay?” he walks by me as I nod. His back facing me as I watched him walk away, I feel myself smile because of his promise that he would ‘see me soon.’ He doesn’t hate me.

Before entering the lobby, he turns quickly and says, “The falcon is out.”

I feel my head fall in embarrassment.

Liam is such an idiot.

I turn around and make my way to the room where the boys always record. I place my hand on the cool door handle and turn it. I walk into the dark room and music fills my ears. My boyfriend and his three best friends all sitting in chairs humming along. Liam turns to look at me and a smile spreads on his face. He stretches his arm out and embraces me, kissing me on the lips. Zayn, Louis, and Harry smile at me.

“Babe,” Liam says pulling me to the chair making me sit on his lap. “Listen to our new song.”

It was catchy and slow. The beat makes my mind imagine being at a bonfire at the beach. I swayed my head as I hear Niall’s voice blast through the speakers.

“Cause you were mine for the summer, now we know it's nearly over. Feels like snow in September, but I always will remember. You were my summer love, you always will be my summer love.”

“I like it,” I gush. “Who wrote it?”

“We all threw in a few lines here and there,” Zayn explains. “But Niall and the professional writers wrote a lot. It was actually Niall’s idea to write this song a few weeks ago.”

I feel my heart stutter in my chest. Niall wrote it?

“It’s actually the most he’s ever contributed to a song,” Louis says as his eyebrows rise. “I asked him about it and he said he was just inspired.”

All the boys look at me, realization showing through their expressions. Liam squeezes my hand and I know it was coming together for him too.

I met Niall in June and we started dating at the beginning of July and broke up near the beginning of October. The song was about me.

Liam clears his throat, “Well I’m tired. We are done for today right?” He looks at the guy managing the control panel who nods. “Let’s go home Emma.”

You would think after living with him for a little more than a month that by now I would be used to him saying ‘home.’ But, I’m not. And even though my mind is racing about the new piece of information I just collected, I still get chills down my spine when he says the word. The good kind of chills though.

I take his hand as he opens the door and nods to the others, “I’ll see you guys later.”

“Bye,” I say.

They say bye back and I make eye contact with Harry. He is smirking, a little too humored at what just happened. He was the only one other than Niall and Liam who knew the full story about what had happened a month ago. Harry winks at me and I glare back, making him smile more. I follow Liam out and he shuts the door behind us. As soon as I hear the click of the door lock, I hear an eruption of laughter sound from the room we had just exited. I look up bewildered at Liam and he shakes his head.

“Just ignore them.”

We arrive home and I am furious.

“How could he write that song about me?”

“It’s not that big of a deal, babe. It could have been worse,” Liam reassures me.

“Oh yeah? How?” I ask as I hop onto the kitchen counter. I don’t know why I liked sitting up there. I guess it made me feel somewhat taller, what with me walking around with a giant all the time.

“He could have written a very mean, angry, hate song.”

I let out a little laugh, “True.”

Liam steps in front of me and I look into his deep, chocolate eyes. “It’s actually a really cute song.”

I don’t know why, but the thought of Liam thinking the break up song my ex-boyfriend wrote about me was cute, bugged the shit out of me. This is all so messed up. “He still should not have done it. And how did he find out about our master plan?”

"So I take it you talked to him? It worked?" he asks hopefully.

"Yes, but he knew all about the plan."

Liam sighs, "I'm not very good at being secretive. I sent the text as he left but he came back for his phone. As he went to pick it up, he saw the text I sent you over my shoulder and I mean, he was the only one leaving so he figured it out fairly fast."

"Ugh, Liam!" I say aggravated.

Liam raises his hand and places it on my cheek. His thumb brushes against my lips lightly, “You’re cute when you’re angry.”

I squint at him, “I know what you are trying to do.”

He smirks, “Is it working?”

I sigh, “A little.”

“Good,” he whispers. He leans in and our lips meet. What started off as a sweet and small kiss slowly turns into a long, heated, passionate one. I wrap my arms around his neck and he pulls me closer, grabbing my hips. I wrap my legs around his waist and I feel him smile against my lips. We continue like this for a little longer before the doorbell rings.

He groans and I pull away, “I’ll get it.”

I hop off the counter and jog to the door. I slowly open it to see a tall blonde girl in a long dress blowing in the wind. Her brown eyes pierced me, full of sorrow, and I felt a dagger stab through my heart as I recognize the girl standing in front of me. I want so desperately to slam the door in her face, but something stops me. There was a small bump bulging from her stomach under her dress. It wouldn’t have been that noticeable but she was normally so skinny that this stood out. I tear my eyes away from her baby bump to look up at her face.

“Hey,” Tiffany says, smiling weakly.
