Bound [Book #1]

They are connected by the fact that they've all died and been brought back.

This is a trilogy. Look for the other two books:

23. Twenty-Three.

Before either of us knew it, we were at the playground entrance. Julia turned to me, gasping for air, and shook her head.

“What's going on?” she asked me. She glanced down at the burns on her arms. “Did you do this to me?”

I nodded slowly, tears stinging my eyes. “I had to. I'm sorry.”

“What are we doing here?” she asked, ignoring my apology. “Where are Graham and Terry?”

I frowned at her. Did she really not remember? Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe it was better for her that she didn't know Terry was gone. It would break her heart.

“Graham's here,” I said, tugging her hand. “Let's go.”

Julia didn't move. Her eyes searched behind me, searched the darkness that only I could see. Then she shouted, “Graham! Oh my God!”

Then she swept by me. I looked, and through the darkness, I saw him.

Someone had a chain around the top bar of the swings, and at the end was Graham, his feet dangling an inch or two above the ground. I started toward him, but before I got there, Julia screamed.

Graham wasn't moving. Julia cried on the ground. I closed my eyes tightly. If I opened them slowly, maybe I would see the sun again. I didn't move again, not until I felt a chill run through my body. I whipped around.

There was nothing.

I ran my hands up and down my arms, tried to make the goosebumps go away. “Hey,” I called softly. “Jules, we gotta get outta here.”

“No,” she whispered, standing. “We can't leave him. He might wake up.”

I didn't want to tell her I doubted it., so I said, “Okay, we'll stay until he opens his eyes. But can you come here, please? I don't think it's safe for you to be standing there.”

Julia looked at me, opened her mouth to speak, but all that came out was a shriek. She backed away from me, suddenly, and into Graham. His body swung but he didn't react. Pain filled my chest and I sank to my knees.

“Vivian!” someone cried. “Get up! Come on!”

“I can't,” I breathed sharply. “I can't move. What's happening?”

“It's Jev.”

That voice. It was Mira.

“Get out of the way!” a voice snarled. “I can't believe I trusted you.”

“I'm not going to let you hurt her!” Mira shouted.

Jev chuckled. “Over your dead body, right? That can be arranged.”

Then Mira screamed. When she stopped, I could feel my limbs start to work again. I turned my head, and as I did, it was like color exploded everywhere.

I could see everything. I could see the scars on Graham's body, the fear in Julia's eyes, and the blood running down Mira's face. Someone was crouched next to her. It was a man I had never seen before. He was holding her close to his chest.

And he was crying.
