Summer With Styles

Macey Calihan is a grown woman now, and when she comes in contact with an old box of keepsakes, she remembers a series of incidents that made her the woman she is today. As a youngster, she was struggling with past occurrences of suicide, self harm, and of course depression, all while trying to balance out the good and bad things of her life. She was so close to happiness when her adoptive parents informed her she and her brother, Carter, would be going to the U.K. to spend the summer at her father's recording studio. She then meets the boy -- or boys -- who save her life, only to pick it up and wreck it again in a new, exciting way. Macey falls head over heels for one, while another falls for her. The only thing standing in her way of happiness, is one decision. But as it turns out, some decisions make themselves whether you like it or not.

10. Love for Children

My alarm clock woke me early in the morning with Harry by my side. Was it too much to ask to stay like that forever? “Harry,” I whispered, shaking him a little. “Wake up sweetie.”

“Nooooo,” he groaned, turning away from me. “Five more minutes, mum.”
I laughed a shook him again. “Haaarrryyy.”

Finally I pulled the covers off of him, noticing he was naked, and gave him a firm slap on the bum. He jumped up with wild eyes, like someone had shot him. “YOU SCARED ME!” He yelled, half laughing. I, however, couldn't hide the giggle that was building in my throat.

“I have a hand print on my cheek now,” he said examining himself in the mirror.

“Think of it as a love lick,” I laughed, throwing him his boxers. “Put those on, will you? My parents are probably home.”

He slid them on an laid down on the bed beside me. “You know they don't care if I stay the night,” he said with puppy dog eyes. “Are you ashamed of me?”

He laughed playfully and I replied, “No, but if they see you naked...”

“I get it, I get it.”

“Hey, uhm, Harry?” I couldn't help but think it was now or never. I'd worked up the courage and I needed to do it before I back down again. “Can I tell you something?”

He looked at me questionably and said, “Sure.”

“I really don't know how to tell you, but I'm gonna just come out say it.”

“I'm – ”

“HARRRYY!!!” Louis barged into my bedroom, pouncing on top of Harry, followed by Niall and Liam. “GIVE ME A BIG FAT KISS!!” Louis yelled squishing his lips to Harry's cheek.

Way to ruin the moment, guys.

So close.

“Get up, we're going to Paris with Joe,” Liam said, dragging him off the bed.

“What?” Harry replied, tousling his hair. “Why?”

“Surprise appearance at a children's hospital,” said Niall. “It was Zayn's idea. There's a bunch of kids in the cancer center than love One Direction, and we're doing a concert and meet and greet with them.”

How sweet! But Zayn...where was he?

“Of course it was Zayn's idea,” Harry spat.

“Give it up, mate,” Liam said back. “You can't stay mad at him forever.”

“He tried to kiss me girlfriend!” He pointed at me and I suddenly felt like too much attention was on me at once. I stood up and walked out of the room as they continued to argue, howling like a bunch of little boys.

I could hear Harry shouting insult after insult about Zayn, and my stomach lurched. I hated the awful things coming out of his mouth...slandering the man I love.

“Hey,” Joe said as I walked into the kitchen, pouring himself a cup of coffee. “Are you coming to Paris with us?”

“Is Carter going?” I asked, trying to shake away my previous thoughts.

“No, he's spending the day with Gemma.”

Honestly I didn't want to be in the same room with Harry and Zayn, let along a cramped Jet. What if something happened, and they got into it? My heart was becoming an emotional mess. “Yeah, I'll come along.” Apparently I ignored those feelings and agreed to go.

The ride on the private jet was excruciating. El and Danielle joined us, so I could have talked to them, but I just sat holding Harry's hand almost the entire time, while Zayn stared at us from across the sitting area, scowling every time Harry spoke to me. Guilt ran through my spine because I knew that what I thought earlier about Zayn...was true in some ways.

Don't get me wrong, Harry was my everything. But Zayn was fascinating and transfixing to the point where slowly, I was falling for that mystery in his chocolate brown eyes. I didn't love him, as I had so irresponsibly thought, but I did care for him. I just wasn't sure how much.

But then I remembered Harry, and the situation. No matter what happened between Harry and I, the situation would drive us together even if we were apart. Maybe it really was destined that Harry and I were meant to be together...if not, none of the things we went through together would have happened. He was my first love, and I wanted him to be my last...

But Zayn...

We arrived at the airport in Paris within a few hours and headed for the children's hospital. I couldn't wait to see the look on those kid's faces when they guys got there. It's incredible that Zayn came up with an idea like made me realize how thoughtful and sincere he was. He really did care about people a lot. He cared about me, too..

“We have a special treat for you guys! In honor of our Love for Children Foundation, we brought a very special boyband all the way from England to sing for you guys!” The head nurse said in her French accent into the microphone. The kids cheered, and their faces brightened. “One Direction!”

The cheers got louder as each of the boys flooded onto the stage. El, Danielle, and I stood in the back admiring their amazing talents.

“Have you told him yet?” El asked. I shook my head and glanced down at my feet.

Danielle placed her hand on my shoulder, “You have to Macey.”

I looked out on stage and Harry saw me. He smiled and waved, blowing me a little kiss. I pretended to catch it and put it on my heart. “Look at him, guys. He's so happy up there.”

“They all are,” El said with a smile.

“Yeah,” I replied. “And I don't want to end that happiness.”

“He won't have to give up his career,” said Danielle. “You can move here.”

“I can't do that. I'm going to school in the fall.”

After the show was the special meet and greet, only this one was a little different. Instead of setting up a table, they went to every child's hospital room personally. We girls decided to go visit a few ourselves. One in particular really got to me.

“Hi,” Harry said, sitting down on her bed. She was only about four years old and had leukemia, but she was so sweet and charming. She immediately crawled out of her spot and sat on his lap. “I'm Harry.”

“My name is Emily.”

“It's nice to meet you,” he replied to her. The other boys stood by and watched Harry talk to Emily, amazed by his connection with her.

“I heard the doctors tell my mommy,” the little girl began. “that I'm going to heaven soon.”

My heart shattered to the floor and I looked over at her mother who had tears in her eyes.

“Well Emily,” Harry replied. “Heaven will have gained a special little girl.”

She smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “I think so too. Is that your girlfriend?” Her little finger pointed my direction and I smiled.

“Yes, that's Macey,” he said.

“Do you love her?”

He glanced up at me with love in his eyes. “Yes, I do. Very, very much.”

“Wait!” she said, hoping down and walking over to her pile of stuffed animals. She picked up a small teddy bear with a heart in the middle of it that said 'I love you.' “Give this to her,” she said. “That way she'll always remember how much you love her.”

He was so great with children...I had no reason for holding back.

I pull the fairly small teddy bear from my keepsake box, remembering the little girl at the hospital. It reminds me of children and how innocent and beautiful they are with they're eyes full of life and wonder...even when they're sick. Emily wasn't afraid of what she was going through. She stayed happy because she knew she had people who loved her. That being said, it also reminds me of love and how no matter what, you always have it. But sometimes, having it doesn't mean anything when you don't cherish it.
