11. Coma

"Mommy! I'm struck in the tree! Help!" I yelled. My dog Buster was barking up at me from the base of the tree. He was spinning in circles, jumping.

"Coming, Summer! How in the world did you get up there?" My mom asked me. She easily reached up and grabbed me from the tree. When she asked me that question, I pointed to the top of the tree. My kite was tangled in the highest branches.

"Oh, honey. Next time, go ask daddy or mr to help you get it down. We'll ask daddy when he gets home. okay? Now lets go clean up your knees. They're pretty scraped up!" She said, sitting my small, five year self on her hip. I laughed.

Liam's POV

"Is she okay?" I asked the passing nurse.

"Yes sir. She came out of surgery okay. She's still asleep, though. No visitors until she is completely stable." The nurse replied, impatient. That was the fourth time I had asked her that question.

I went back to the waiting area, where Zayn, Louis, and Niall were sitting down. Louis was on the phone with Elenore, Niall was asleep, and Zayn was reading a magazine. He looked up when I walked in. I shook my head. He sighed.

"They said that she's fine. Look, Liam, were all worried about her. But it has been three days. You have not slept a wink, or have gone out of the hospital. You need to go back to the flat. Tyler sees you as a father figure. And now that his mother isn't around, he needs you." Zayn said. I sighed.

"You're right. As long as someone updates me every so often, I'll go home. But I'm coming back first thing in the morning." I said. Zayn nodded.

"Come on. A car is waiting out front. Niall offered to stay and Louis will be here for the later shift. Somethings up with El, so he's worried. But anyway, let's go home, bud. Summer will be fine."

The setting changed from my sunny backyard to the well-lit hallways of my grammar school. All my friends were around me, but their faces blurred. The only person's face that wasn't blurred was Jared, my first love.

He was waltzing down the hallway, hands slid into the pockets of his jeans, his auburn hair covering his eyes. I was so excited. Everyone was whispering to me that he was going to ask me to the winter dance. We were the "Perfect couple".

As he got closer, my friends walked away, giggling that they were going to give us some privacy.

"Hey, Summer. Listen, the winter dance is coming up, and I was  wondering if you would like to go as my date." He asked in his sweet, angelic voice. I hastily agreed. Looking back, I was so stupid.

Friday night was the dance and I was dressed in my best dress. I had saved up for it the last two weeks, ever since I saw it in the window.

The dress was blue, a deep, royal blue. It was also strapless and only went down just above my knees. The waist was bedazzled in silver beads and gems, meant to look like diamonds. I paired the dress with a black shawl, black tights, my mom's golden necklace my dad got her and gold stud earrings.

My makeup was perfect and my hair was in perfect waves. And I stood in the cold, clutching my purse, waiting at the steps of the school for my date. Minutes passed. And they turned into hours. And soon, the dance was nearly over. And my makeup was smeared down my face. I got up from the step and ran home, my flats making blisters on my heels.

When I got home, my dad was at the table.

"Hey sweetheart! How was the dance?" He asked, looking up from his late-night cereal. When he saw my face, he got up and engulfed me in a dad-hug. Also known as a bear hug.

After I told him my story of being stood up and he had made me a bowl of ice cream, he wiped a tear from my eye.

"That guys doesn't deserve you. Excuse m language but he is commonly known as a dick. Now go get dressed for bed and we'll watch movies until mom gets home. Cheer up, Sum. He's only a boy."
