14. Things that stop you dreaming

When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was a sweet smell in my nose, and the sound of birds chirping and a smile appeared on my face. Rose was laying down on my chest, my nose buried in her hair. The rain had stopped and the sun was shining. I guessed we would go back to the houses today.

“Wake up love,” I whispered in Rose’s ear. She moved a little and made a protesting sound. I chuckled. “How late is it?” Rose asked me in her sleepy voice. “I have absolutely no idea,” I answered since I didn’t have a phone or a watch. She nodded and yawned once again. “Let’s get something to eat,” she said. “Sure, you’re hungry?” I asked. “Yeah,” she nodded and blushed slightly. She was simply adorable.

We went over to the place where everybody was sitting down, eating a piece of bread. There was only bread, without anything on it. We couldn’t expect much more, I knew that, but I still was quite disappointed. I thought Rose must have noticed, because she said, “you can have some from me. I’m not that hungry.” She smiled. “No, you need it too. I know you only say this because you want me to eat.” “No, that’s not true,” she protested. I laughed. “We both know it is true Rose, and I’m not going to take it,” I said. She sighed. “Fine then,” she laughed.

We walked over to the place you could get some food, our hands intertwined. I smiled when I thought of how cute we must look together. Rose looked up at me with eyes that asked for an explanation, but she didn’t say a thing. So neither did I.

Niall had a big smile on his, but I didn’t bother asking. That was none of my business. I just shrugged it off. I suddenly realised we were holding hands and our fingers were intertwined. I looked down to my feet so no one would notice me blushing.  I brushed a string of hair behind my ear when we arrived at the guides who were distributing pieces of bread. It was a rather stupid attempt, giving little pieces of bread to teenagers. Didn’t they now that if we start eating we only get more hungry? I still took a piece of bread though, and thanked. I guess they were not that stupid after all since everybody was eating gratefully.

After everybody had eaten, one of the guides climbed up a rock and asked for our attention.
“Excuse me please, everybody listen up. As you most likely have noticed, the rain stopped and we are able to move on now. Everybody will have the same partner as yesterday so we can leave soon. We will leave in five minutes, so get all your stuff together and go to a boat. Thank you.”

We walked back towards where we had slept but we both didn’t have anything laying there, so we walked straight towards the little shore where all the boats were laying, ready to leave. The one guide that was waiting for everybody to come out walked up towards us.
“You two were pretty good yesterday, you can go ahead on you own, if you want. Niall looked at me to see if I was fine with that. I nodded. “Sure,” I said.

We sat down in one of the canoes and Niall pushed if off into the water. We both took out our peddle and left.
I don’t think I’ve ever been alone in the middle of the woods.

If you can’t get what you love,
you learn to love the things you’ve got.
If you can’t be what you want,
you learn to be the things you’re not.
If you can’t get what you need,
you learn to need the things that stop you dreaming.
All the things that stop you dreaming.
