TRAINING THE COUGAR *warning explicit content*

**Love Story with explicit content **
Shy thirty-something, Fifty Shades obsessive and One Direction fan Alexa, was hiding a traumatic secret from her past. As a result, she'd put up personal barriers and kept friends, colleagues and men at arm's length. Then one summer, Jake Martin appeared all too briefly in her life. He was handsome, clever, kind...and only eighteen! Nothing happened during that Summer, but now five years on, fate had ensured their paths crossed again. Could this traumatised Cougar put the past behind her and could Jake be the one who finally teaches her how to love?

It was early August and Alexa and Jake had been in their new house for two weeks. Jake would be flying out to Valencia for ten days at the weekend and Joe was coming to stay with Alexa for the first three days, before joining Jake for the rest of the week.

Alexa walked into the study where Jake was finishing setting up his desk.

"Cold orange juice, Sire?"

Jake looked up and beamed. "Thank you Wench. As always, your timing is impeccable!"

She walked round the desk and handed him the drink but he ignored it, until he'd yanked her onto his lap.

"How's our room coming along?" He asked after draining the glass.

"Yeah...getting there. I've only got a few more jackets to hang, then I can finish off sorting your clothes, if you like."

"I don't want you over-doing it. I feel bad enough as it is - going over to Spain now and leaving you in the middle of it all."

Alexa hugged him. "Oh Jake, how many times? If that was the next available block you could take as holidays, you had to take it. Better now then waiting till November for the next block. The sooner you get over there and bond with the kid, the better. We don't know how long Manuela has left."

Jake sighed and kissed her temple. "She didn't look too good the other day did she? I think she's deteriorating quicker than expected."

Alexa nodded. "All the more reason for you to go now. He can meet you, Joe and the rest of the family. They may need to step in and hold onto him until you get there...when she does...pass away."

Jake sighed, sadly. "I know...God the next few months are going to be so tough on the poor kid. Meeting a dad he never knew...being introduced to a whole new family...his mum leaving him...And then coming here and starting a new life with us..."

"We'll get him through it, babe. It says nothing for our skills as a trainee Paediatrician and a Child-Carer if we don't!"

"Where do you want this box, Cariño?" Joe asked as he emptied the contents of his boot.

"Ooh, would you mind putting it in the spare bedroom please? Thank you for sorting through all that for me."

Joe beamed fondly at her. "No problem, Cariño. What you are doing is wonderful. Jake will be so pleased and I'm sure Jacob will love it."

Alexa smiled nervously. "Oh God, I hope so!"

"Are you really okay with all this, Cariño? It's a lot to take on board." Joe asked in a concerned voice.

Alexa shut the car boot for him and took a deep breath. "I have to admit, I'm quite nervous about how it's all going to pan out. I'm on tender-hooks until I hear from Jake tonight, to see how his first meeting with Jacob went. My stomach is in knots. I pray to God, that Jacob bonds with him and doesn't reject him. It would devastate Jake after all this."

Joe nodded. "Niñito has always managed to meet each challenge life has thrown at him head on...but this...I never believed in a million years something like this would ever happen. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit worried about it all too."

Alexa was tidying up after supper when her iPhone buzzed.

*Hi sweetheart, how's things? I can be on Skype in the next ten minutes. Is that OK xx *

*Hi babe! Yes everything's fine. We can't wait to talk to you xx*

*How's papa? I don't want to hear he's been flirting with my girl :/ xx*

*Oh Jake! Of course he's been flirting with me :) But you'll always be the only man for me xx*

*Glad to hear it :) Speak to you shortly. I love you xx*

*I love you too. See you soon xx *

Alexa's hands were trembling so much on the iPad as they waited for Jake to answer the video call, Joe had to hold it for her. The screen twitched and suddenly Jake's handsome face came into view.

"Hi Jake! Oh God, I miss you so much!"

Brilliant Alexa! Could I sound any more desperate and needy?

Jake smiled adoringly at her.

"I miss you too sweetheart," he said warmly. He turned to his father. "Hi papa."

"Hola Niñito...How's it going?"

"Yeah...Good I think. I spent a couple of hours with him today. It was a bit awkward at first...but then I gave him that Lego Atlantis set you suggested I buy for him, Alexa and that made him relax a bit and we worked on assembling it together. Jesus - I didn't realise they were quite so complicated! I think you have to be a member of MENSA to be able to work it all out! I don't know how many times I got it wrong - but Jacob ended up resolving it. He seems a bright kid."

Alexa smiled. "Aww good, I'm really pleased Jake. How's Manuela?"

Jake frowned. "Not great. She was delighted to see me and begged my forgiveness. It was all a bit..overwhelming...I assured her I forgave her and that I would look after Jacob and make sure he wants for nothing and that you were happy to play a major part in that too. That seemed to reassure her, then she looked really tired and the nurse suggested I go and play with Jacob so she could rest. Her friend, Sofia is staying with her too, to help look after her and Jacob, and she has nurses that come throughout the day. She's as comfortable as she can possibly be...but I think the end isn't far off, unfortunately."

Joe and Alexa nodded solemnly.

"So, did Jacob talk to you?" Alexa asked gently.

"Yeah...after about half an hour of just answering yes or no, he began to open up a little. He enjoys school, especially reading and writing. He enjoys making things and he plays football at a local sports club. He likes swimming too. He seems really sporty."

"Chip off the old block, hey Niñito?" Joe said with a smile.

Jake nodded. "I still can't quite believe I have a son and now that I've met him...We seem to have a lot in common. I bought a football on my way home tonight. I'm taking him to the park for a kick-about tomorrow."

"Aww that will be nice, babe. Give you more of an opportunity to spend time alone with him on neutral territory and doing something fun. Hopefully it will help you both to bond more."

"Yeah, I hope so. Sofia said he hasn't left the house much since Manuela's condition deteriorated, apart from going to school and to football. She drops him off and picks him up, as she doesn't want to leave Manuela for long, even though the nurses are with her most of the time. Whilst I'm here, I'm hoping to get him out more and Sofia can stay with Manuela."

"I'm sure he'll respond to that. By the time Joe gets there, he should have grown in confidence with you."

"Oh I hope so sweetheart. I don't want to push him. This is so much for a kid to take onboard...I want to play it right."

"You will, Niñito."

Alexa nodded enthusiastically. "You'll do brilliantly, Jake. Try not to worry too much. Just do what comes naturally to you."

Jake nodded and smiled. "So papa...are you behaving yourself?"

Alexa flopped into the bed, exhausted. The house was so quiet now with Joe gone. After being on her own for the past few years, she now found she didn't like being alone. She had a permanent ache in her chest and she knew it was from missing Jake. Dear God, she missed him. It had only been four days and she had hated every minute of their separation. Part of her wished she had gone with him, but deep down she knew it was better if she stepped back and let Jacob bond with his new family without her there, confusing things. She had spoken to Jake earlier and he'd said that Jacob had seemed to accept Joe as his Abuelo, which had really pleased him. They'd then taken him out to the Zoo which Jake said he'd really enjoyed, especially the Tigers. Jake had also told her that Manuela had spent the past two days pretty much asleep the whole time. Alexa sighed. It was so lovely on one hand and so very sad on the other. She hugged Jake's pillow to her. She had sprayed Lynx Africa - Jake's favourite deodorant and the source of his wonderfully musky smell - onto one of Jake's t-shirts and fitted it over his pillow. She had slept every night since his departure, wrapped around said pillow, trying to fall asleep before the tears started. She desperately tried not to cry, but she missed him so much at night. She missed his arms around her, missed his touch... his kisses...his making love to her...

She awoke with a jolt the following morning to her iPhone ringing. She frantically tried to focus on where the sound was coming from as she blinked awake, but only succeeded in knocking the phone off the beside cabinet, to the floor. Panic seized her as she desperately reached for it, seeing it was Jake that was calling.

"JAKE? YOU OKAY?" She barked in a rough voice.

"Sweetheart? You sound awful...are you ill?" He asked worriedly.

"No, it's only..." Alexa looked at her watch. "SHIT! It's 9:45am! I mustn't have set the alarm! Shit!"

"So I woke you?"

"Yes, thank God! You okay? How's..."

"I'm at the hospital, sweetheart," Jake began in a quiet tone. "Manuela deteriorated overnight. She...She...died twenty minutes ago."

"Alexa? You still there?"

"Y-Yes," Alexa whispered. "Oh Jake, I'm so very sorry. How's Jacob?"

Jake sighed and Alexa could picture him screwing his face up. "He's upset, obviously...but he seems to have accepted it. He's known she's been slowly dying. She has been drifting in and out of consciousness for the past twenty four hours. Papa's just taken him to get a drink and a chocolate bar from the Cafeteria. Sweetheart...this changes everything. I...I want to try and bring him back with me, now Manuela's gone. I don't see the point in delaying. I'm gonna contact Annabel and if I can get it organised in the next five days, I want to do it. What do you think?"

Panic seized Alexa again. Bring him back with him? So soon? They were still in the process of moving into the house. Jacob had only just met Jake, Joe and the rest of the Martinez family. He'd just lost his Mum and now Jake wanted to uproot him immediately to start his new life with them in England...

It was an automatic response, given out of love to reassure him it was the right thing and that everything would be okay.

It would be okay.

Wouldn't it?

After finishing her call to Jake, Alexa laid back on the bed and thought. And thought. And thought.

There was only one immediate solution she could see. She grabbed her phone and made the arrangements.

Alexa walked into Costa Coffee shop in Sommerville village and slipped into the table opposite Sue.

"Hi Sue, thanks for meeting me at such sort notice."

"Well, this is all very mysterious Alexa! I'm intrigued by what was so urgent you needed to meet me before work."

With trembling fingers, Alexa took the envelope out of her bag and pushed it across the table to Sue.

Twenty minutes later, Sue took a long gulp of her double espresso and stared at Alexa in disbelief.

"That is some story, Alexa. I can't believe all this has been going on in your life and you've not said anything! I fucking knew something was going on! You haven't been yourself. How many times did I ask you if everything was okay?"

"I know, I know. And I am genuinely sorry. But I kept thinking the bubble is bound to burst soon and I'll be back to square one, on my own, in my flat."

Sue's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Why would you think that?"

Alexa took out her phone and showed her a recent photo of Jake. "Look at him Sue! He's perfect! And he's in love...WITH ME...And we all know what I'm like! I am SO far from perfect!"

Sue reached out and touched Alexa's hand in a rare show of affection. "Oh Alexa, really! Why do you put yourself down like this? Yes, you are a bloody walking disaster most of the time and I have genuinely, never met anyone else that manages to injure herself more than you do...But you are also probably the most nicest person I have ever met and certainly one of the hardest working. You are also the most naturally talented Child-Carer I've ever worked with. You cannot learn the skills you have, Alexa. It's a gift. And now you're leaving us to lavish all your skills on someone who will become your step-son! Why on earth would Jake ever leave you? He knows how lucky he is to have you."

Oh God...Oh God...No...Oh For Fuck's Sake...

Sue hurriedly fished in her handbag and gave her a tissue.

"I'm...I'm...Sorry," Alexa breathed between her tears. "It's been such a stressful few weeks, my emotions are all over the place." She took a deep breath. "Thank you, Sue. Your words mean so much to me. I am sorry I'm leaving so soon. I didn't plan it this way...I thought I'd have more time...But I need to be on hand when he brings Jacob back. Jake can't take anymore time off work, apart from his scheduled leave days after he has worked his shifts. I need to be permanently available for Jacob."

Sue nodded. "It does leave us a bit in the lurch, but I can always get someone from the agency to fill in whilst I find a replacement.  Actually, Vicki's got Brayden in at a Nursery now and was asking if I had any spare hours I could give her." Sue sighed. "We're all going to really miss you, Alexa. Especially the kids."

Alexa nodded, her eyes filling with tears.

Oh God, I'm going to miss the kids too. Christ, I will be a mess on Friday...

"There will always be a job for you at the Playscheme, Alexa. Good Nursery Nurses with managerial skills don't just grow on trees. I'll always take you back, if you ever need a job."

"T-Thank you Sue. You've been more than generous. And again, I'm really sorry about the short notice."

Sue sniffed. "Not your fault, I understand. You have to do, what you have to do." She smiled. "You got any more photo's of Jake? Who knew he'd grow up to be so HOT?"

Two days later she sat waiting for Jake and Jacob to Skype her. She had completed her side-project in record speed and now she wanted to surprise the boys and show them the fruits of her labour. The iPad screen began to vibrate and two faces far too close to the webcam, suddenly gurned at her, making her jump.

"Oh my God!" She laughed. "Fine example you're setting your son!" She said sarcastically.

Jake laughed. "Hi sweetheart," he said sitting back in the chair and pulling Jacob onto his lap.

"Hi nutcase. Hi Jacob, how are you honey?"

"Hi sweetheart," he said with a shy smile.

Alexa burst out laughing and Jake looked at his son in amused disbelief. "No, Niñito. I call her sweetheart, you just call her Alexa."

"I don't mind you calling me sweetheart, Jacob. It actually sounds better coming from you!"

"Oh really? Maybe I should just stick to calling you Wench then?" Jake said dangerously.

Alexa grinned. "Bit touchy aren't we?"

"Oh sweetheart, you have no idea what I dream of touching every night..." he breathed.

"I can imagine," she whispered back. "I dream about it too."

Their eyes locked, then they remembered they weren't alone. Alexa cleared her throat.

"Ah-hem...yeah...I er...wanted to show you both something. Whilst you've been away, I've been working on the spare room. I wanted Jacob to see where he would be staying when he comes over. I thought if he could visualise it, it might make him feel better about the move."

"Oh sweetheart, what a wonderful idea," Jake said in appreciation. He turned to Jacob. "Look closely at the screen, Niñito, Alexa is going to show you your room, at our house in England."

The little boy smiled and nodded and leant in towards the screen. Alexa turned the iPad away from her so it focused on the room.

"I can't take all the credit. Joe helped me decorate it when he came over. He's a whiz with wallpaper, although I had to admit, my heart stopped beating every time he went up the ladders! I saw this green wallpaper with footballs on at Homebase and thought it was perfect, then Carpet-Right had a carpet in a similar shade of green and they came out and fitted it. Joe also helped me assemble the furniture and set it up..."

"Oh my God, Alexa..." Jake breathed in wonder. "Hang on! Are they my trophies?"

Alexa laughed. "Yeah, I asked Joe to pick out some of your best ones to put on the shelf in Jacob's room. I thought you could tell him all about how you won them. You said he was into sports."

"I can't believe you've done all this..." he began.

"Recognise that Jake?" Alexa asked angling the iPad towards one of the walls.

"VALENCIA!" Jacob shrieked.

"Oh my God! Is that my old Valencia shirt?" Jake exclaimed.

"Certainly is! Joe also brought that down for me. I washed and ironed it and got it framed. Looks cool doesn't it?"

"It's amazing sweetheart...I'm dumbfounded. I'm beginning to like Jacob's room more than ours!"

Alexa laughed. "Nah, this room's no good for you babe! Look what's over here Jacob..." She angled the iPad to the floor.

"LEGO!" Squealed Jacob in excitement. "Look papa!"

"I know hijo, I can see it...You sure you bought enough sets Alexa? I can still see some bare carpet in the far corner..."

"Very funny, Jake. The bare carpet is where you will be sat helping him make up all the models!"

Jake groaned and Alexa automatically shivered.

Oh God, I have so missed that noise...

Alexa turned the iPad around so she was facing them again.

"So Jacob, do you like your room?"

Jacob nodded enthusiastically. "Si Alexa. Muchas gracias. Thank you a lot." He beamed.

Oh God...I think I am falling in love with this little man...

"Aww you're very welcome, honey. I can't wait for you to come and stay."

"And we can't wait to come back either," Jake sighed. "Thank God there were no hiccups at getting through all the red tape." He kissed the boy's head. "Niñito, why don't you go and say thank you to Abuelo for helping with your room, whilst I talk to Alexa."

"Okay papa," he smiled. He waved at the screen. "Bye Alexa."

Alexa waved back. "Bye Jacob. See you soon."

He jumped off Jake's knee and ran off.

"Oh God Jake, he's adorable." She breathed.

"I know, right?" He smiled proudly. "Oh sweetheart...he's just...just...Amazing. He's handled everything so well. He cried a bit at the funeral, but other than that he's been okay. He gets a bit upset at night and I've been sleeping on a mattress on the floor next to his bed to reassure him...but otherwise..." He smiled proudly.

Alexa's heart filled to bursting point. "Oh Jake, I'm so happy for you. He obviously adores you...and he's calling you papa."

Jake nodded and beamed, the same beam that had been on Jacob's face five minutes earlier. "I can't tell you how that felt, the first time he called me papa. I don't think I'll ever tire of hearing it. I can't believe how much I've grown to love him in such a short space of time and to think, I didn't know he even existed a month ago..."

"I know," she began softy. "I told you would be a fantastic father, Jake. It comes naturally to you." She smiled lovingly at him. "So what have you got planned for today?"

"Me, my cousin Rafa, papa and Jacob are going to Manuela's apartment to finish packing it up. God bless her, she had organised everything. As soon as she realised she was getting no better, she sold the family home and put all the money in a bank account. She rented a small apartment and just filled it with the essentials. The majority of their stuff is ready packed in storage. It's just a case of getting it shipped over. And he has a bank account with a decent sum of money for his future."

"I know. Despite the circumstances of his conception and pregnancy, she was an amazing mum till she got so sick." He sighed. "She told me, she had wanted to make sure Jacob had everything he needed, should he had ever want to come and find me. She'd told him from as soon as he could understand, that his papa was in England - and that we'd only known each other a short time and then she'd had to come back to Spain - but maybe one day we would meet. That's as far as she had got with him. She said she was building up to telling him the full story once he was older. She worked so that she could send him to a private international school so he could learn English, thinking that it would help him if he ever came over." Jake sighed and rubbed his forehead. "I can't believe she had the presence of mind to think all this through as a single mum, with all the stigma that's attached to that over here, then she had to cope with her parents dying in a car accident a couple of years ago and then she got ill... She'd been through so much and yet, still managed to produce this amazing little boy."

"Oh Jake..."

Jake took a deep breath. "Anyway, so we're just having a packing day today, then tomorrow my cousin Jorge has got us tickets to watch Valencia play in a friendly match. It's going to be Jacob's first time watching them play at the Mestalla stadium. He's so excited! Then on Monday, me, papa and Jacob are going on a fishing trip in Abuelo Jose's boat for the day. I'm gonna teach my boy how to fish like my papa taught me on the same boat when I was a kid. Then obviously, we pack up on Tuesday and come home on Wednesday, thank God. I seriously cannot wait to come home, dive inside you and stay there! Thank God, Jacob has been such a distraction...but the nights..."

"...Are far too long without you in my arms." Alexa finished for him.

He smiled longingly at her and aimed his fingertips towards the camera. Alexa did the same so that it looked like they were touching. "I miss you so much," She whispered.

"I know." He whispered back. "This has been the longest few days of my life. Even the five years without you didn't seem so long! It's because I now know what I'm missing."

Alexa nodded. "I sleep curled up around your pillow, that I've wrapped in one of your t-shirts and drowned it in your deodorant. It's the only way I can sleep."

"Oh...sweetheart...don't tell me that," he groaned. "Please..."

Alexa shut her eyes and moaned. "I want you so badly..."

Jake shivered. "Oh Alexa," he sighed. "I am going to kiss every damn inch of you ten times over when I get back." He shook his head. "Ah-hem...Enough sweetheart. Wouldn't do me any good to get hard right now!"

"Sorry," She giggled.

"No you're not, Wench," he smirked. "So...what have you been up to - apart from re-decorating the spare room?"

Alexa grinned. " know how the Fifty Shades books have got loads of classical songs in them? Well, I had an idea for an alternative playlist*. Something more along the lines of songs that would complement certain events in the story. So at night I hit iTunes and research songs that I think would be great as background tracks to emphasise what Christian and Anastasia are going through."

Jake smiled. "I bet that's keeping you busy!"

Alexa nodded. "It is actually. I'm doing a playlist per book. I think I've got the first one sorted - I've got songs from Britney Spears to Dolly Parton!"

Jake laughed. "Jesus Alexa! I cannot wait to see what you've come up with! So what have you got planned for the kids later?"

Alexa sighed and took a deep breath. "Nothing much... apart from saying goodbye..."

Alexa sent the photo from her iPhone to the wireless printer and waited for it to beep into life. She looked again at the photo on her phone and was engulfed in a warm feeling that grew from her heart and spread to the tips of her toes. Jake had sent it her half an hour ago. It was of him, Joe and Jacob stood next to a small, white fishing boat, against a cloudless, cornflower blue sky and the azure Mediterranean. He'd text her the words:

* The Martin boys off on their first fishing trip together! So excited! Will text you when we get back tonight. I love you with all my heart xx*

She turned from the printer as it began to print and went to hunt down a frame. She had bought some new frames from ASDA as she wanted to fill the house with photo's of her and Jake, Jake and Jacob and hopefully of the three of them together. She was still a bit fearful of how Jacob would react to her once she was in his life 24/7. Would he accept her as his father's girlfriend so soon after losing his Mum? He was only eight and had been through so much already and now he was leaving all that was familiar, to start a new life in a new country, with a father he'd only just met and a woman he'd Skype'd a handful of times. Jake had emailed a few local schools to see what places were available for him and what options they had, so hopefully by September, he'd also have a school place.

She found a matching frame to the one that held the photo Jake had sent her on Saturday, of the two of them in matching football shirts at their first Valencia match together. Seeing them in matching white shirts, only made the amazing family resemblance even more striking. She went back to the printer and held up the photo.

Wow! It's like they've been cloned! Like some kind of Russian dolls in male, Spanish form! God, they're all adorable together. I so can't wait to have them all back. Especially Jake. He'll have a nice tan too...Mmmm...Oh God I am going to fuck his Goddam brains out!...But we'll have to be really careful now. Must remember that we're now sharing the house with an eight year old.

Jake had said he'd been sleeping on a mattress on the floor next to him. What if Jacob doesn't settle and Jake needs to do that every night? Obviously, Jacob needs him more than I do and he will always come first now. I'm fine with that. My parent's had always put me first and I know if I'd ever had my own children, I would have put them before everything. It will take a lot of adjusting on all our parts, but we'll get there.

It had been a pretty hectic, weird day. After framing the print and putting it on Jacob's dresser next to the Valencia photo, she'd been out and done a food shop and also filled up on ice-cream, crisps and chocolates for Jacob. Jake had said that Jacob had a pretty good appetite and there was nothing he didn't seem to like.

Wonder who he takes after!

It felt so strange not to be putting her uniform on after lunch and going off to work. She was still getting over how emotional Friday was, saying goodbye to everyone. The parents had been so generous, inundating her with flowers and little gifts from the kids. The house looked like a florists. There were that many flowers, she'd run out of vases and had had to improvise and use glasses and bowls. Sue and the girls had given her a silver four-leaf clover necklace for luck and a first aid box for a laugh. She'd been ordered to keep in touch and she promised as soon as Jacob was settled, she would pop in with him. Maybe eventually he'd come and spend some time there in the holidays. It would do him good not to just be stuck with her and Jake. She put away the last of the dishes and checked her watch.

What time is it? Surely they were back by now?

*Hi babe, how did it go? Did you have a good time? Did you catch much? How's Jacob? xx*

It was when the end credits of Eastenders rolled up, that she realised Jake still hadn't replied. It was nine thirty in Valencia and would be pitch black by now. As she was reaching for her phone, she heard the screech of tyres on the road outside, then the doorbell rang.

What the fuck?

She ran to the window and peered outside.

She rushed to open the door.

"Krystal...are you okay?" She asked breathlessly.

"Sorry to turn up unannounced, dear. Have you heard from Jake or Joe? I've been trying Jake for the past two hours and not got through."

"No...he text me this morning and sent me a photo of them going on their trip and he said he'd ring me tonight. I text him an hour ago and was just waiting for his call...Oh God Krystal, where are my manners? Come in, please."

IDIOT! Fancy leaving her on the doorstep!

Krystal came in and went into the living room. Alexa followed her and with trembling fingers dialled Jake's mobile then Joe's. Both came back with 'We are unable to connect you at this time. Please try again later.'

"Can you get me Jake's phone book, dear? I'll try Joe's brother Tony's landline. Maybe it's just a technical fault."

Alexa nodded, the power of speech having deserted her along with her saliva. On her return, Krystal dialled the number and spoke in surprisingly fluent Spanish to whoever answered the phone. Alexa saw the colour drain even more from Krystal's pale face. Alexa began to shake. Something was obviously wrong.

Krystal rang off and closed her eyes.

"What is it?" Alexa heard herself whisper.

Krystal's eyes opened, the ice-blue colour almost transparent.

"They don't know where they are. They never returned from their fishing trip."
