Friends, Lovers, or Nothing? (Sequel to Summer Love)

Things have gotten better slowly. Excruciatingly slow, to be exact. I saw Niall every now and again, but I refused to acknowledge his existence. I despised the guilty feeling I got when I looked at him nowadays. I knew he wanted to talk to me, but I knew I'd do something stupid if I did. Sometimes, he wasn't even home. Occasionally on those days, I would go speak with Maura, keeping tabs on how and what Niall was doing. Telling me concert dates and when he had to go in for recording sessions. These conversations stayed secret between us. That is, until Niall walked in on us one day. He stared at us, taken aback by my presence. I shifted uneasily in my spot on the couch next to Maura. I looked down at my reflection in my tea.

"It's good to see you." Niall said, shutting the door behind him. I kept my face low, avoiding his persuading, blue eyes.

"So,what are you doing here?"

5. Not So Friendly Visit...

My father had finally persuaded me to visit my mother, but I sure wasn't planning on going alone. Having no one else to confide in, I turned to my last resort...Niall.

I stood on his front step, debating whether or not I should ask him to go with me.

I shouldn't. If this is so much for me, imagine how it would be for him. It was bad enough that she'd insulted him, to his face, already. But, maybe I should, though. He'd be some emotional support. After all, he'd suffered with me, right?

I made up my mind. Just as I was about to knock, a shirtless, sexily messed up haired, Niall answered the door. Every shred of confidence I'd just had drained from me, leaving me a colorless mess.

"What do you want?"he asked bored, shoving his hands in his sweat's pockets. I was taken aback by his tone.

"Uhm, well I--"

"Spit it out."

I scowled at his rudeness. The boy tried to get me back for months, and now he can't hardly stand being around me.

"I was going to ask if you'd like to come with me to visit my mother, but since I'm such an intolerance to you, I guess I'll just go by myself."

"Oh, no bother. Just hold on." he shut the door in my face, me standing there dumbfounded. I felt as if I should walk away and leave, but I'm not sure about what I am to do. Niall returned in jeans and a Aero t-shirt.

As we arrived at the mental institution, I felt a sense of nausea in the pit of my stomach. The building was pale white, reminding me of those doctor movies with creepy men in labcoats. I glanced at Niall, seeing that he is just as terrified as I am. I swallowed the lump in my throat and opened the car door.

A burly man escorted Niall and I into a large, padded room. A solitary confinement room.

"She'll be in shortly. Another guard will be on standby." he instructed before leaving the room.

Niall and I sat in a corner of the room (since there were no tables or chairs), opposite the door she was to come in. I restrained from biting my nails, so I just combed through my hair instead. It wasn't cold, but I could feel myself shivering. All I did was shake as I closed my eyes and massaged my temples.

"Nialler?" I whispered.

"Yeah?" he popped his fingers.

"Do you think she'll try to hurt me?"

"Judging by this room, I don't think she'll be able to do much harm at all." he replied, laying back against the wall. He looked up at the ceiling and closed his eyes. I was about to say something when the door across the room slowly creaked open. A guard walked in with my mom, her arms behind her back. She was smiling, which soon vanished once she saw Niall.

"What's he doing here?" she scoffed.

"He came here with me to visit you." I tried to seem optimistic.

"I didn't ask for him I asked for you," she scowled at him,"he's the reason I'm in this insane asylum. Both of you are!"

"Actually, I'm pretty sure you're in here because you went crazy and almost killed me!" I yelled at her, standing up.

"You shouldn't have been defending him! He deserved it after ruining our family. I mean look at him! He doesn't look like he wants to be here with either of us, and you're the ones that are dating!" she retorted.

"Well, about that..."

"What?" she looked puzzled.

"We aren't dating anymore. He just came with me to visit." I said reluctantly.

"I don't know what angle you're playing at, bringing him here." she hissed.

"I'm not playing at an angle!" I threw my arms in the air. "Hell, I'm not even playing!"

"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to keep your voice low." the guard told me.

"You know what, Lori, I don't have to be here. I'm leaving. C'mon Niall." I grabbed his hand and pulled him out of the room. I stormed out of the institution, head held high. Getting in my car, I slammed the door behind me. Once I was in the car, I propped my head up on steering wheel.

"Well that was pleasant," Niall said sarcastically as he sat down in the passenger seat.

"Let's just go."
