Friends, Lovers, or Nothing? (Sequel to Summer Love)

Things have gotten better slowly. Excruciatingly slow, to be exact. I saw Niall every now and again, but I refused to acknowledge his existence. I despised the guilty feeling I got when I looked at him nowadays. I knew he wanted to talk to me, but I knew I'd do something stupid if I did. Sometimes, he wasn't even home. Occasionally on those days, I would go speak with Maura, keeping tabs on how and what Niall was doing. Telling me concert dates and when he had to go in for recording sessions. These conversations stayed secret between us. That is, until Niall walked in on us one day. He stared at us, taken aback by my presence. I shifted uneasily in my spot on the couch next to Maura. I looked down at my reflection in my tea.

"It's good to see you." Niall said, shutting the door behind him. I kept my face low, avoiding his persuading, blue eyes.

"So,what are you doing here?"

9. Breaking the Ice

"So, Harry, we should probably get to know each other better before taking this relationship seriously." I glanced over at his spot beside me.

"Who says we have to take it seriously?" he chuckled.

"Honestly, Harry." I looked at him intently.

"I mean it!" he leaned over to me, laying his head on my shoulder. "I want us to have fun. To go out and do things, to wrestle, and cuddle, or curl up on the couch and play games. Maybe lay in bed all day, or make dinner together."

I pondered the subject as he grinned at me.

"I can't cook."

He gave me a sarcastic smile and an eye roll. "I'll teach you then."

"I still want to know more about you." I hugged myself, shivering.

"Yeah, okay." he took off his light coat and wrapped it around my shoulders.

"Chivalrous I see."

"Is that all you wanted to know?"

I pulled the coat tighter around me, breathing in his scent as I crossed my arms. I looked at him, spent with his restraint.

"Why don't you want to tell me anything?" I asked in a soft tone.

"Because not everything about me is as wonderful as it seems." he shrugged. He pulled out his phone and checked the time.

"It's almost ten, we should get you home." Harry helped me up and put an arm around my waist, leading me to the car.

I sat silently in the car, carefully watching Harry from the corner of my eye. He stared ahead blankly. We pulled in front of my house and he walked me to the door. I lay my hand on the door knob. Just as I was about to walk inside, Harry grabbed my hand.

"Look, uhm...Arabella. I, I um...I'm sorry for, you know, being a jerk back there. It's just that, well, I...I um--"

"I get it Harry," I turned and smiled at him,"there are some things you don't want to tell me. It's okay, really. I understand."

"Well, it's not that I don't want to tell you. I'm just afraid of how you'll respond."

I gave him half a smile and caressed his cheek. He looked a bit startled as I gently kissed his lips, them soft under mine.

"Harry, nothing you could do, or have done, would keep me from liking you. We'll talk about it later."

"How about tomorrow? Lunch maybe?"

"Yeah," I threw him a smile,"I'd like that."

I sat up straight in bed, stretching and what not. My vision cleared and I hopped out of bed. Checking the clock, I saw that it was 11:30. A little late but no matter. Today was going to be great; I could feel it. I dressed down to my basics and walked to my closet. What to wear, what to wear? After much deliberation, I decided to go with a fitted, blue tee and some skinnies. Stepping into my bathroom, I began fixing my hair. After french-braiding with a bun, I slipped on a white headband.

"Oh, there you are."

I practically jumped out of my skin as I turned to look at him.

"Niall, what are you doing here? Who let you in?" My father was at work and Jillian at school.

"I knocked but no one answered, and the door was unlocked." he blushed.

"Well you shouldn't just do that! Good Lord, you gave me a heart attack!" I put my hand to my heart, calming myself.

"Er, sorry." he mumbled.

"Just don't do it again. Anyways, why are you here?"

"We were meeting for lunch today, remember?"

All of my happiness for the day had shattered. I hadn't remembered anything about that when I'd made plans with Harry. What was I going to do? I bit my lip, thinking. I gathered my composure and looked at Niall directly.

"Niall, look, I'm really sorry, but I'm going to have to break our lunch for today."

"What? Why?" he sounded a bit hurt.

"Well, I have other plans. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just hoping you'll understand."

"What are your other plans?"

Knock, knock, knock. How coincidental. No, no, no, no, no! Everything is going all wrong. Things weren't supposed to happen like this.

"Who's that?" Niall started for the door. I stopped him, blocking my bedroom doorway.

"It's my other plans. Don't overreact. I'm going to put this as politely as possible, if you start something, I am not taking your side. Nor will I tolerate you in my social circle."

"What do you mean?" he tried to move past me.

"Are you listening to me," I took his head in my hands, fixating his eyes on me,"because I am dead serious. If you try something I swear to God, Nialler."

"What's the big deal?"

Knock, knock, knock. I sighed and let go of him. I took lead down the stairs, Niall following close behind. This was going to be disastrous. I slowly opened the door and tried my hardest to smile.

"Hello, Harry."

"Good afternoon, love," he kissed my hand,"you look beautiful as always. Are you ready to go?"

"Yeah, hold on. Let me lock up. C'mon Niall." I mumbled. He stepped out the door.

"Oh, I see. Well, thank you Arabella. I completely understand." he began walking away. "Maybe some other time then?"

"Yeah, sure." I waved him goodbye, thankful he followed my directions. I turned my attention to Harry, who seemed more than a bit confused.

"Lets just go." I tugged at his arm.
