A Promise to Keep

Katrina Grande gets her heart broken. Again. After that experience, she promised herself that she wouldn't falls in love again and gives up on men. She has a past that barely anyone knows, and she doesn't trust people very easily. But then she runs into the one and only, Zayn Malik. She's not even a fan of One Direction. Katrina doesn't want to break her promise, ever. Besides, why would Zayn even comes near her? She's just a average (actually very crazy) girl. Will she let Zayn Malik in her life and get swept off her feet or keep her promise forver?

17. Panda

Zayn's POV

I saw her concern for the black-and-white puppy. Panda. That name was perfect for the dog, especially since he's cuddly like a mini bear. Katrina was calm pretty much the whole time, except when she called me. She was a bit frantic but tried to be calm and relaxed so Panda wouldn't be nervous. She was a natural with animals.

But when she started talking about hope and how things would get better, I was surprised. That was basically the first time she opened up a bit to me without much encouragement. She must've been through something, and she's trying very hard to forget it.

I studied her. She continued to pet Panda. My gaze softened when I looked at the dog. I can tell Kat already loved this dog and that there was no point in asking what she was going to do, but I had to.

"What are you going to do now?" She looked up at me, indecision seen in her shiny dark brown eyes. Even in the dark, her eyes were shining. "I—I don't know. But the main thing on my mind right now is taking Panda to a vet. But after... I think I'm going to keep him. There are challenges, like having to go to work and I don't want to leave him alone," she sighed and then continued speaking. "I'll figure something out later. It seems Panda has enough energy so we can go to the vet."

"Okay, I'm coming with you." I grabbed my keys on the table and looked at Katrina to see if she objects. She looked at me carefully before asking, "Are you sure? You don't have to come you know."

"Yes, I'm coming with you. You're not the only one who grew fond of Panda." I grinned down at her on the floor. She smiled back and picked up the puppy from his bed. She wrapped a blanket around him to keep him warm. "Do you know a nearby vet?" She asks and raised her eyebrow.

"There's one about less than 10 minutes away. And since you want to take care of Panda, do you have any supplies?" I shrugged on my jacket and walked out the door with Katrina following behind with Panda in her arms.

"Erm, no. Looks like I'll have to drop by the store on the way home."

"I can help choose the stuff. I had a dog named Rolo back in Bradford. Sadly, I don't have enough time to go visit alot and see him." I remembered Rolo, my pet dog. He was sweet and lovable and just wanted to show you affection. I miss him alot, but I'm pretty sure my sisters are taking care of him.

I got into the drivers seat of my black Bentley Continental GT after opening the door for Katrina in the passenger seat and shutting the door after her.

"Sit tight. I drive like a madman sometimes," I said and looked at her with mischeif written all over my face.

"Well, looks like Panda here can't be more than just 4 months old, probably even younger. He's dehydrated and nutrition starved. Some worms in his stomach, but some medicine can get that fixed. Has fleas, but he just needs a bath and he'll be fine. I'll give you the medicine, shampoo, and some food that will last few of days that will give him a nutritional boost. And I trust you'll be filling his water dish regularly until he's no longer dehydrated and his skin isn't pulling and sagging like this," the vet, Dr. James, demonstrated by lightly pulling at the dog's skin.

We watched as it slowly pulled back onto his body. Poor puppy, such a young age and he had to be like this. No animal deserves to be like this. It just pulls and tugs at my heart thinking about the people and animals out there starving and homeless and dying. And when I think like that, I feel more grateful about my life and everything in it.

"He should be completely healed by the end of this month. Then you can bring him back for his vaccines and be able to take him places, like the park and for walks. He's sweet and adorable so you won't have trouble with him," Dr. James continued. Katrina was focusing intensely on what the veterinarian was saying so she wouldn't forget a thing.

"Any questions?"

"No. Wait actually, do you have any suggestions of puppy food to buy when we go to the store for supplies?"
Katrina asked curiously.

The man thought about it for a minute and then answered, "I can give you a list, just in case one of the suggestions I tell you aren't in the store. But the main type of food you should buy is puppy food."

"Okay then," I replied and looked back at the puppy. His eyes were more alert and his head was a bit more high. He was already feeling better.

"You can come up to the front desk to collect the supplies I'm giving you."

Katrina nodded her head and picked up the puppy on the table and cradled him to herself as she followed the vet outside. I trailed closely behind. My mind was thinking of the nearest pet store to go to.

The lady behind the desk handed me the supplies and a receipt for visiting. Katrina already payed the bill without me noticing.

"Did you pay the bill already? I could've payed." I said, surprised that I didn't see her pay. She looked at me, a bit flushed, and gave a small smile. "It's alright Zayn."

Then she turned around, as if shy, and walked out the doors to get back to the car. I quickly followed her with the supplies. I opened the back door and put the supplies on the seat.

"I don't want to take Panda into the store. He can easily be sick since he doesn't have any vaccinations. Do you know a place where we can drop him off and pick him up? I would ask Riley and Jaz to watch him but they are at work and won't finish their shifts for another 2 hours."

"Erm... Oh I know! We can ask Harry! He's not doing anything today. All I know is that he'll be home alone," I suggested. I started driving on the road to Harry's place. The curly haired boy should be at home.

"Okay then. Onward to Harry's place peasant!" Katrina exclaimed lightly and giggled. I grinned at her and turned my focus back onto the road.

After all, the last thing we need is an accident.

"So all I need to do is feed him, make sure there's water, and just give him a bit of medicine? Seems easy." Harry smiled down at the puppy in his arms. He took the puppy with no hesitation. Even though Harry was more of a cat person, he still had a fondness for dogs too.

"Sounds easy, but it can be hard. Panda is gaining energy here, so I'm not sure if he'll want to start walking around," Katrina suggested and gazed lovingly at the dog. The small pitbull returned the look with one full of trust. It amazes me of how this dog trusts strangers so easily after being alone and abandoned on the streets.

"Okay. I'll watch him carefully. How much trouble can he be? And I like his name alot too. Panda," Harry said to himself and grinned at us.

"Thanks mate. We'll come back in an hour or so." The curly haired boy nodded and shut the door behind us as we walked back out to my car.

"That was nice of Harry to take care of Panda on a short notice," Katrina commented. I opened the door and she got in and I jogged to the other side and got in and started the car.

"Harry is fond of animals. Taking care of Panda should be heaven for him," I replied with a smirk. Katrina was gazing out the window, a smile on her face. She sighed and looked back at me when we were on the main road.

"What store are we going to?"

"There's this one called 'Healthy Pets' a couple blocks away. It's near Walmart." I heard her gasp. "Oh no! I forgot I had groceries in my car! Some of it must be spoiled by now. Gah, I'm such an idiot," she murmured and cursed under her breath.

"Don't worry. We can drop by Walmart and get the stuff you need. Everything's going to be fine," I said calmly. Her body relaxed a bit and looked at the time on the radio. She groaned and closed her eyes and let her head roll back. "I forgot I had to pick up Jaz and Riley in an hour. We really need to get another car. I'm so forgetful right now."

"You can call them and explain what happened. I'm sure they will understand and can wait an extra hour at the mall. You're just a bit stressed out, that's why you're forgetting some things," I suggested. I turned into the parking lot and found a space as close as possible to the stores. We got out the car and Katrina stood off to the side and called her friends.

A/N: Heyo! I might update the next part early. I'm not sure, depends if I'm in a extra lazy mood. Oh well, hope for the best!
