Looking Down On Earth

I wrote this a while ago; it's very short and only one chapter long, but I showed it to my family and they really liked it. It's just a thought that popped into my head, of what it's like for others around us, and I could add to it, if people like it. Please leave a comment to let me know!

1. Looking Down On Earth

“Look down at the Earth, Little One. What do you see?”

“I see land, Wise One. I see sea. Why am I looking? What am I looking at? Why does this blue planet hang in the sky? What is it for? The noise is deafening! The gases sting my eyes and burn my throat! Why do we sit here, listening to the endless din? Why do we sit here, breathing in the endless smoke? What is its purpose?”

Wise One shuffled over on her ancient feet and sighed a deep sigh.

“Little one, why do you sit there, across the room from me?”

“Because I do not wish to stand, and I sat down here.”

“You speak with reason, and I understand you perfectly well, but you did not answer my question. At least, you did not answer the question I intended you to answer.”

“But you said-“

“I know exactly what I said, but the question I asked was different to the one you answered.”

“How so, Wise One?”

“If I had to ask a different question, yet expect the same answer, I would ask: ‘Why do you exist, Little One?’”

Little One pondered over this for a while, while Wise One sat with an amused expression set into her wizened face.

“Because I was born, Wise One. I know this is not the answer to the question you asked, but it is the only answer I can give. I do not know for what reason I was put here, nor for what reason you were, if you forgive my saying so.”

Little One bowed humbly, and Wise One’s weathered face cracked into a smile as she leant against the wall behind her.

“Your answer does not answer my spoken question, but you just gave me the answer I was looking for. If you do not know why even you were called into existence, how do you expect me to explain to you why a whole separate part of reality exists in harmony with us?”

“Earth is NOT in harmony with my nose.”

“Ha! Neither is it in harmony with my ears, but then again, neither are your endless questions, or Angry One’s ranting at my people. But we all play our part.”

Little One’s brow knotted with confusion.

“Even foul stenches, and raucous cacophonies?”

“Yes even those. You see the robes I am wearing? They are woven from the very fabric of reality. As are yours, and you, and everything around you.”
