4. Upon a night

ON A NIGHT

Dressed and bedraggled a cloth
Barely fit this wandering sloth
Starved of slumbering embrace
No friend to gravities embrace

Then upon my shoulder bare a touch
Just a little and not enough
Cramped of neck I turn it slowly
Just a leaf and nothing surely

Then ever faster through the glade
The footed crunch of every blade
Of every blade of grass.
A cold seasons last delight
But breathless sun will put it right.

Yet ever vasive did it seem
No one around me could I gleam.

A clue I sought a meaning surely
A truth that I thought did ignore me
A creak then perhaps a moan
Old father times aging tome

Imagined ghosts both past and present
Stole my sterile eye

Then there came a whispy bustle
Crunching crunching of many a rustle
A taunting came with every breeze
Imagined threats I partial freeze

Again my shoulder bore a touch
Just a little and not enough
a leaf and nothing surely
a leaf and nothing surely

‘’who goes there disturbs my wandering
Steals the clues that I am seeking
Steals the clues that I have sought
And left me feeling overwrought!’’

Ever faster through the glade
The footed crunch of blade
Of every blade of grass

I turned my head expecting ghosts
The presence of attending hosts
Yet silence echoed in the fall
Still no one whom I may recall

My silent cloak do not disturb
Yet could not shake this ghost absurd
Absurd the feeling of this essence
Presence of this fearful essence

Then with sudden anger I did pause
A curious and waited cause
The dark nights secrets I did seek
With righteous mind I deigned to speak

‘’beyond the shadows darkest lough
Aborn of imagined enoughs enough
Hide you may within the night
Shielded from my greedy sight
Hills and glade and perfect lee
Come out come forth reveal to me!’’

Then a creature did appear
An anti-beast I could not fear
Descriptive by the merest quoth
Was little more than a month.
