3. The Thumb

“You don’t say,” I said under my breath. “But I do say,” Ranger replied, clearly confused about my sarcasm. I shook my head, flipping my hair lose from my pony tail and walked back to my car. “Meet me back at my place!” I yelled to Ranger, who was already across the parking lot. “Alright!” He replied, and hoped into his car. I jumped into my car and drove back to the Nook. That is what we called our apartment, the Nook.  I drove faster then I really should have but right then I didn’t care, when I got there, Ranger was sitting on the couch. I had given him a key when we first moved in, “Okay, so let’s check out this box.” I said, sitting down next to him. “Look right here,” he said pointed to a little dent. “Maybe I’m going crazy…But I see an R dented there.” He added, I looked closer to it and say it too. “Nope, not going crazy, that is a R.” I said, “Regina…” He groaned, I nodded, “I’m sorry Ranger.” He put on a fake smile, “I’m sure she’ll be alright. She’s tough.” He said, but he was biting his lip. I heard the doorbell ring, “One sec,” I said and walked over to the door. I realized I must have looked really moody, I smiled and opened the door. But, my smile instantly faded when I saw a big, brown, card bored box sitting there. I looked down the hallways, but no one was there. I picked it up, on the top of it; it said one word, ‘Regina.’ I brought it over to the table, “Ranger…you might want to see this.” I said, “What’s the matter?” He asked as he strolled over to the table. I nodded towards the box. He bit his lip again, I realized it might not be the best idea if he sees it, there might be something disturbing inside that might upset him.  “You sure you want to see this?” I asked him, he didn't look so good. He just weakly nodded.  I opened the box and gasped. There were three things in there, but the first thing I saw was a shriveled up, purple and black, thumb. I moaned and started to feel dizzy and a bit queasy. “Katherine, are you alright?” Ranger asked, and steadied me with his hands on my shoulders. I shook my head, trying to get rid of the dizzy feeling. “Yeah…yeah it just surprised me.” I said, and looked back in the box. “Is that Regina’s?”
“She was wearing that nail polish when she came over…” He said quietly.  I nodded, trying to understand what he was feeling right then. I picked up a letter that was next to the thumb. I read it out loud, “So, if you think that you know what’s going on. Just stop, continue life and be the person you wanted to be. This tells you what will happen to the girl if you come any closer. I’ll be watching…waiting.”
“Waiting for what? And what is that at the bottom of the box?” Ranger asked and picked up a long chain, it was gold and dark red. Ranger squeezed his eyes shut. “What’s the matter? Have you seen this necklace before?” I asked, he nodded, “I gave it to Regina on our tenth date.” I looked closer at it and realized that there wasn't supposed to be dark red on it. That was blood. I was getting really sacred; Ranger looked so worried I just hugged him. “I’m so sorry Ranger,” I said. I knew this must be painful for him. Regina was one of the only girls he’s ever been successful with.  Suddenly, Ranger said, “ Weren't we supposed to go out with your parents last night?” I shrugged, “ doesn't matter.” This was important to Ranger, which meant it was important to me. “I’ll be right back.” He said, and went into the living room.  I looked around the box, then I saw something at the bottom, it was a little piece of paper. It said ‘Scout Coleman.’ That was Ranger’s older sister, what did that mean?  I went into the living room, where Ranger was sitting. "Tell me about your family again." I said,
"Well, my mum went crazy and is in an asylum right now and my dad is a psychopath killer that is in jail. Scout is still in a foster home and uh yeah...But you already know this..." He answered
"Where is Scout?" I asked hurriedly,
"At the Keller's..."
"Do they protect her?"
"Yes, you've met them Katherine...What's going on?"
"Nothing...I just wanted to know."
I then got a call, I looked at my phone. It was from Eleanor, I answered, "Hey girl. Are you with Ranger?"
"Yeah," I answered, "Okay...well um I have to go...Bye." Then she hung up. "Okay..." I said, "Everything alright?" Ranger asked, I nodded. "Eleanor...Hey, can you pass me that box?" I asked him, he passed me the little wooden box from the pawn shop. "Maybe we could ask who sold this to him. Then we would be one step closer to finding Regina."
"Would he tell us?"
"Alright, then let's go!"
We drove back down to the pawn shop, it was getting kind of late, but it was still open. We walked back inside, "Hello, could you tell us who sold you this box?" I asked the clerk and handed him the box. He chuckled, "This I found at that field down by that old country restaurant." I nodded and smiled. "Okay, thank you!" I said, took the box back left walked out of the doors. "Where are we going?" Asked Ranger, "To the field down by the old country restaurant." I replied. We got in the car and drove down there, when we got there, I got out of the car and walked over to the woods part. I scanned my eyes for anything unusual. But found nothing, I kept looking, Ranger was on the other side of the field. After a few minutes of looking, I head Ranger scream. I turned around and ran towards him. "Ranger!?" I asked, he fell down. I ran even faster, "RANGER" He wasn't moving, what had happened? I got to him and saw a bloody slash on his arm. I looked around and saw someone fleeing, I just ignored them and turned back to Ranger. "Ranger?! RANGER! Wake up! Wake up Ranger come one wake up!" I had tears in my eyes, I even slapped him, trying to wake him up. I had his blood all over me, and there was blood all over him. I called an ambulance. They got there a few minutes later, and they got him in. Before they left to the hospital, I walked into the woods, seeing if the person was still there, which I didn't expect. But what I did find was even more horrifying, lying there, I saw an almost dead Regina. There was a note on her foot. I picked it up, it said "There, I gave you what you wanted, now give me what I want."
