1. The Start

I was walking into Starbucks when I got a text from my best friend, Steph, saying she had urgent news. Worried, I got my coffee and hurried over to her house. I rang the doorbell and stood there anxiously waiting. Her twin brother, Xander, finally opened the door.

"Hey, Jessi, couldn't stay away could you?" Xander winked at me, he'd been trying to get me to go out with him since we were about 14.

"Nice to see you, Xander, but I'm here to see Steph."  I patted his arm on my way past, then went to Steph's room. "Okay, what's wrong?"

She turns towards me grinning like mad and closed her laptop. She got off her bed and walked over to me. "Guess what!"

"What?" I asked getting impatient.

"I won tickets to... One Direction!" She exclaimed and jumped up and down, squealing.

"Calm down, calm down!" I said even though I was a bit excited, myself. "When is it?"

"Next Friday!" She said trying to contain herself.

"Where?"

"Boston." She mumbled.

"Boston? How are we supposed to get to Boston? That's like 16 hours away!" She calmed down and looked at me.

"I was thinking... that we could road-trip there." She grinned once again.

"Oh my God! That would be the best way to end this summer!" I said starting to jump up and down with her. This was our last summer before college and we both wanted to do something big before it ended and this would be great. "When would we leave?"

"Any day we wanted! I talked to my parents and they said yes, but I don't know about your mom."

"She'll say yes, and even if she doesn't, she can't control me anymore, I'm 18."

"True. Okay, go ask her, because I've already started packing." She pushed me out the door and waved goodbye before shutting the door in my face. I walked downstairs said goodbye to Xander and left. When I got home my mom was nowhere to be found.

"Mom?" I called around the house. I finally found her in the study, on the phone.

"I know, but Jess is leaving for college soon and-" I knocked on the door frame. She turned towards me and quickly said, "I have to go, I'll call you later."

"Sweetie! How are you?" She said giving me a hug.

"I'm fine, Mom. I need to talk to you."

"Is everything okay? Has something happened?" She asked frantically.

"I'm fine, but Steph and I were hoping to do something big before the summer ends..."

"What did you have in mind?"

"A road-trip to Boston... for a concert."

"Oh I don't know, Swee-"

"Mom, I'm 18 now, I can take care of myself. I'll call you frequently and I won't do drugs." My mother nodded her approval and I walked out.

After I was done packing I called Steph and let her know that I could go. We planned to leave tomorrow morning. The next week was going to be amazing, I could feel it, but what I didn't know that it was going to change our lives forever.
