Years after witnessing their parent's murder two sisters leave their home in Italy and head to America for a fresh start.

1. New Beginings

"Melody, if you don't hurry up we are going to miss our plane!" I called up to my sister as I stood in the foyer of our lavish Italian villa. I blew my copper colored bangs out of my eyes as I tapped my foot impatiently. Melody came bounding down the stairs a few moments later. She carried her rather large suitcases with ease, as if they were feather light.

"Sorry. I missed a few things." She chirped as she hurried past me to put her things in the car. I raised an eyebrow at her as she passed, an uneasy feeling unraveling in the pit of my stomach. I knew my sister was hiding something from me, it was just the matter of finding out what that was.

"What's a few things Mel? You said you had everything packed last night." I said as I walked after her.

"I thought I did. But I didn't." Melody retorted, doing everything she could to avoid looking me in the eyes.

"Well what did you forget to pack? And don't lie to me Melody."

"You will be angry with me..."

"No I wont, I promise. Now, tell me what you forgot to pack." A long moment passed before Melody spoke again. Her voice was no longer soft and musical, it was now a hoarse broken whisper.

"Mother's music box." She finally said "I forgot mother's music box..." She kept her head down as she spoke, reminding me of a child that was caught red handed. I sighed softly as I slung a comforting arm around her slim shoulders; a mixture of anger and sadness ran laps in my bloodstream. I wasn't angry with her, no, never her. It was that cursed music box she was so fond of. It had belonged to our mother. She use to wind it up every night and play it for us when we were children, to help us sleep she had told us. The music that seeped from the small wooden box was utterly beautiful, in a haunting lullaby kinda way. It had been passed down from generation to generation in our family and was our mother's prized possession. It was also very valuable, in fact, it was worth a whopping 1.5 million dollars. What made it so valuable I did not  know; but there were plenty of people who wished to get their hands on it.

"I thought you were going to leave it behind Mel. I thought you wanted a new start." I said in a cool, controlled voice as I gently tilted her chin upward so she would look me in the eye. Seeing her sapphire eyes shimmering with unshed tears caused tears to well up in my own. Looking at her I saw myself, and why wouldn't I? We were twins after all. We looked exactly alike. We both had mother's heart shaped face and almond shaped eyes, along with father's high cheek bones and button nose. We both had curvy hourglass figures and long luscious copper hued locks. The only thing that set us apart was our eye color. She got mother's intense sapphire blue eyes and I got father's misty gray eyes. Other than that we were identical.

"I..I do want a fresh start. But it is the only thing I have to remind me of her. I mean you have father's cross." She sniffled as I gently touched the ruby studded cross that hung from my black lace choker "Oh please Rachelle, let me take it with us. I promise not to open it or show anyone. I will keep it hidden. I swear it." She continued to plea while a single tear rolled down her cheek. Another sigh escaped my slightly parted lips as I wiped away the tear. I hated seeing her upset, I really did.

"Alright. You can bring it along but once we reach our new home, you must find a hiding place for it. And you can tell no one, do I make myself clear Melody Rosalina Graham?" I said in a stern voice that reminded me so much of father's. Melody's face seemed to light up and a excited squeal escaped her.

"Oh thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" She gushed as she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling me into a tight hug. I smiled  and hugged her back as I soothingly patted her back.

"Your welcome. Now get in the car, our plane leaves in an hour." Melody nodded and climbed into the passenger seat of the candy apple red Ferrari while I took one more fleeting glance at the mansion. We had lived there all our lives, and had so many memories along the years. Some good, most bad. It was the only home we knew. Not anymore. I thought to myself. Soon we would have a new home and we would make new memories. I ignored the aching feeling just above my heart and climbed into the driver's seat.

"You ready to being our new lives Mel?" I asked smiling a bit as I looked over at her.

"Sure am!" She beamed "Are you?"

I smiled as I put the key in the ignition and the engine purred to life. "Only one way to find out." I smirked after revving the engine twice, loving the soft hum of power that surged through the car...and me. Melody must have seen the exhilarating look in my eyes because she hastily fastened her seat belt, an anxious look coated her delicate features  only to be replaced by pure joy a second later. She was still hiding something from me, this much I knew, but I will let it go. For now.

"Goodbye Italy and hello America!" Melody exclaimed loudly. She gave a delighted giggled as the sun's bright rays gave her mocha colored skin a beautiful glow. I smiled slightly and spedout of the drive way. Somehow I couldn't help but notice the intense relief the blossomed inside of me as I drove further and further away from that retched place Free...we're finally free! After a moment my smile widened as the airport came into view. Soon we would be on a plane heading for America, we would finally leave our torched past behind us.
