When I walked into the library I sighed in relief. This Library is my safe haven from the depressing mood of death. This library had everything. Every ounce of Gorgon history and legends could be found in this very library.  It also had books from the Earth world. I have to say, humans have great minds and creativity. My favorites are Peter Pan, Stellaluna, and a series called Harry Potter. I love reading and if I’m not collecting souls or at my room, I’m here. I love books because they let my mind escape and be free to do what it wants.

I grabbed a book called Lord of the Rings and sat down at the tables. As I was reading a Gorgon plopped beside me. I shut my book and looked over to see Dixy. Dixy is one of the only Gorgons I can stand here. She has a short black pixie cut. She has a beautiful face and if she didn’t cover her face in punk rock styled make-up she could be a preppy girl Gorgon easily, but she isn’t that type. She’s an outcast like me, no were not besties, but we enjoy each other’s company. Dixy loves being a Gorgon and has no problem killing someone, in fact she is one of the top collectors here. She died from starvation so her cheeks were a little sunk in and if she showed you her stomach you could count each of her ribs.

“Hi, Dixy.” I gave a half smile.

“Sup. I’m about to go for another bag of souls, want to come?” She smirked with her hands on her hips.

“No thanks, I’m pretty interested in this book right now.” I tried to make an excuse.

“Ugh why don’t you ever want to go extra killing!? You only do the amount required…you’re no fun…” Dixy pouted.

“I’m sorry Dixy it’s just not my kind of thing.” I shrugged my shoulders.

“Fine. I’ll see you later I guess.” Dixy huffed then turned and left.

Phew! I grabbed my book and started to walk to my room. Why am I the only Gorgon who hates killing? I know I am not meant to be a Gorgon. It’s just not my soul’s passion. As I thought to myself I accidently bumped into Ms. Fira. Death appointed her the “principal” of us Gorgons and that power has certainly gone to her head. She shows no mercy to punishments. She is the most evil, heartless Gorgon here.

I gulped as she turned toward me with an icy glare.

“Where are you going Tally?” She said sternly.

“To my room Ms. Fira…” I mumbled.

“Well, you need to keep your eyes on the way you’re going so this doesn’t happen again.” She huffed as she touched my neck. Instantly my neck locked. I couldn’t look up, down, left or right, only straight.

“Good night Tally.” She gave a devilish smile.

“Good night Ms. Fira…” I huffed as I walked past her.

After she dismissed me I tried to move my neck, but still couldn’t. I started to freak out, I started to run to my room as fast as I could, pushing through other Gorgons. I reached my room and gave a sigh in relief, because as soon as I entered my room the spell was lifted. I rolled my neck around from the stiffness, I hate that woman.

All Gorgons have a room, we all live in the castle. On the west wing is the girls and on the east wing is the guys. I don’t mind the living conditions I mean, yes the room is really small, but it is just for resting. Though sometimes I am jealous of humans. I see their huge houses and rooms, and think: how can they use this much space? I wish I could have a house of my own.

I set my book down on my desk and sat on my bed. I opened my window in hopes Opie would come and see me. I waited and waited losing myself in my thoughts. Finally I hear some fluttering in the distance and not long after Opie lands on my window seal.

“Hi Opie!” I smiled.

He cocked his head to the side and making small movements.

“I bet you’re hungry!?” I smiled as I hopped up from my bed and walked to desk drawer. I opened it and pulled out a loaf of bread. I broke off a couple of little pieces and placed them in my hand. I walked back to Opie and let him eat out of my hand. After he was done and I talked to him, I decided to go to sleep.

Our beds just have mattresses no blankets, because Gorgons don’t have a temperature. We are just cold like ice. I closed my eyes and felt Opie nest next to my head on the pillow. Tomorrow is standard combat and defense training…my least favorite class. I let out a deep breath and drifted into darkness.
